When asked what do you do to generate referrals? Word of mouth, I give good service so that my clients will refer me is another popular answer.
I have bad news for you, not long after you have completed your work, your client's life kicks in and then you're the last thing on their mind and most of them won't think about you unless someone specifically ask them if they know someone in your business. Join a business networking organization such as BNI where you will develop contacts and build relationships and really learn to network effectively.
Stay in contact with your clients and prospects all year long. A personal phone call thanking them for their business and their referrals are great but soon forgotten unless followed up with a thank you card and not an e-card. E-cards they may read and delete, an actual paper card mailed to them they tend to keep and even display in their office where it may stay for months.
After you have seen or spoken to someone, send then a thank you card thanking them for their time.
