Q. Last winter we rented a condo for three months. The rent, security, and 11%tax had all been paid. Two weeks before our rental, my husband had a heart attack and we had to cancel. We received our security back but the owner wouldn't help us out with any of the rental money so we took the loss. What happened to the Florida tax money? It was never discussed at the time and was never returned to us. I have just recently thought that perhaps there might be an opportunity to have that returned to us. When does this tax have to be paid by the owner and is it possible that we are still owed this money?

The state of Florida charges a "bed tax" on short term rentals (anything under 6 months).  If you didn't receive your rental money back the tax money should have been turned over to the state of Florida.

You would need to talk to who you paid it to.  When it is paid to the state it is not itemized so the state can't help you.
