"One of the coolest things I see now is fathers and sons coming to the show together," Finn told. "We're kind of a classic-rock band, and people who grew up in the '70s and '80s even can probably relate to us as much as a 21-year-old kid now. There's also a really interesting sense of community with the fans - there's a particular group called the Unified Scene who wear matching T-shirts and form these bonds through the shows. And I never thought we'd see that."

So that's where the Hold Steady find themselves today: still partying hard, still touring even harder, but in front of audiences that now include dads and daughters. The Chili Peppers welcomed him back into the fold, helped spruce him up, and have been humming along very happily ever since.

That arrest was a result of a felony fugitive warrant put out by Arizona authorities following DMX's failure to appear in court last Tuesday to face a marijuana-possession charge from earlier this year. Officials in Miami nabbed X outside a Wal-Mart when they spotted him sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle that had no license plates and was parked in a handicap spot. A routine check revealed the outstanding warrant.

It was a felony fugitive of justice warrant, a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department told his jurisdiction is not allowed to offer DMX bond. That means the rapper will either sit in jail until October 2, when he will face drug charges in Miami for an arrest in June, or be extradited to Arizona, where he will go in front of Judge Michael Kemp on charges that could land him in prison for five years.

Rathbone: Yeah, I did a bit of research about the Civil War. I was always interested in it, and I did spend a bit of time [living] in Texas, so whenever I took Texas history, I learned a lot about the Civil War. I was lucky enough to have that background around me already. What I've focused on was the stoicism. ... I never really grew up in the South, I grew up all over, but for my family values and all the Southern values: You don't speak unless you're spoken to; you keep a very calm demeanor; you try to keep everything as light as possible, but if things get heavy, it's not like you're not going to step up. But it's weird to talk about the actual character elements of (Jasper), because it's all so intertwined with the story of the third book, which is where Jasper begins to expand on his heritage and how he was turned and how he lived.

"We do like the thought of trying to be the best band in America," pianist Franz Nicolay added. "I mean, who really knows who the best band is? I don't, that's for sure. So for us, striving to be really good at what we do and trying to have a good time, that's the fun part. Everything else is just a little beyond us."

Rathbone: Well, most vampire movies are all about the gore and the action and the violence. This movie's about the heart. It's about what moves us as humans, and what is so moving to us that it is even encompassed beyond humanity. These are creatures - they're not people, they're not humans, they're kind of the decrepit side of everything. They're dead; there's no oxygen. They can't feel cold, they can't feel anything, but they can feel emotions and what those emotions lead us to do. You can choose morality, or you can choose the life that nature has provided for you, which is death. It's kind of a life-versus-death-story, but not so much in the realm of "you're going to get killed or get to do some killing," but whether you're going to choose to love life and choose love.
