Absence makes the blog heart fonder - 01:57 AM
I've been taking a leave of absence from blogging on Active Rain. I simply had nothing worthwhile to say. I looked around today and there are others still blogging along who have not much to say either. Which brings me back to an idea I had a while ago: divide the AR bloggers into two groups: those who get points for blogging and those who get points for NOT blogging. What a concept!

Lies, lies and more lies about Search Engine Placement - 11:10 PM
Got a call again today on my cell phone from a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) company: "We found your Camano Island listing on page three of Yahoo. We are partnering with Yahoo and a spot has become available on page 1 and we can put you there for the search term "Camano Island homes." He was not talking about a sponsored placement but an organic search result, he said. I told him that he and nobody else could make such a promise. If I had the time I would have asked more questions about the how he intended to accomplish that miracle

Dear Jennifer...for you...the single gal and (shudder) SOI - 03:19 PM
Many years ago, those folks listening to country music enjoyed Crystal Gayle. One of her songs came to mind as I read a post on active rain. One of those folks you love to read shared her thoughts on SOI. As I read the post, - "You've been talking in your sleep" started playing in the quiet corner of my mind that is reserved for soundtracks that show up when I am reading. Now, I am not saying that the entire song came to mind, just the title stanza there. I rechecked the locks on all the doors. I was convinced that Jennifer

OakPoint TX upholds English as Official Language - 10:04 AM
A couple of months ago, the small city of OakPoint, TX voted to have English as the Official language of their city. With much uproar, the appeal process started. Yesterday, the law was upheld with a 2-3 vote. Oak Point is a tiny little city in Denton County off Lewisville Lake, just NorthWest of Little Elm, TX. The population is under 3500 residents. With such a small population, it's hard to imagine that they've hit the news as much as they have with what's going on there. Maybe it's a publicity stunt to increase their population. This new law does not apply to

Allstate Insurance Trying to Pass Rate Increases Again... - 10:18 AM
After everything that happened about 6 years ago with the Black Mold stuff and Allstate having to refund all their policy holders for unfair increases, Allstate is trying to raise rates again. Last month, Allstate submitted a plan to increase rates by an average of 6.9%. They claimed it was the "cost of doing business." Haven't we all heard that? Well, that plan got rejected because of the large increase and not enough justification for it. Here we are a month later, and they have submitted a new plan for a 5.9% increase. That still seems fairly high to me. This increase will

Texas Electricity is DeRegulated... for the most part - 12:22 PM
A few years ago, Texas became deregulated to help promote healthy competition between some electric companies in the hopes of bringing down the cost of electricity. Within this deregulation, instead of 3 main companies in the area, there are now probably close to 100. Even with the main ones in the area, you could only use the company that covered the area you lived. There is a great website that consumers need to know about where you can go and compare all the different rates that are charged and view what the terms and conditions are. This website is http://powertochoose.com/. This site has

Photoshop: 1st Grade Primer On Layers: Page 2 - 09:02 AM
As you are creating a image using layers, each layer will be listed in the Layer Palette -- Bryce gave us a screen shot of a layer palette for one of his images here. Notice how he has applied different special effects to each layer. And he has named each layer according to the effect ... an excellent practice that helps you keep track of your workflow. Here is a close up of the layer palette for my Sun-Mountain-Man-Dog image. The currently active layer is the one highlighted dark blue. You can make a layer invisible and visible again by clicking the little eye icon on

Anyone ever used Angie's List? Or maybe you had never heard of it, like myself? I didn't know this website even existed until this morning. I was watching TV and saw the advertisement for it. So what exactly is Angie's List? "A word-of-mouth network for consumers. Angie's List is a growing collection of homeowners' real-life experiences with local service companies. The people who join Angie's List are like you - looking for a way to find trustworthy companies that perform high-quality work." It says that over 500,000 members across 124 cities use Angie's List. When someone uses a company, they can grade that company

When Sellers Won't Listen - 05:52 AM
Boy I had a frustrating day yesterday. Sellers pay us for the advice we give but it sure is frustrating when they don't take it. I have 2 stubborn sellers who won't lower the prices of their homes to market value. Prices are dropping over here and they won't stay with the market. Then they wonder why no one is looking at their homes. They say "They can always make an offer." But if they are priced too high then the buyers won't even see their listings. Exactly that happened this weekend, I have 2 villas next to each other owned

Google is watching you!!! - 04:16 PM
Last night I watched a show titled "The World according to Google". Have you seen it? I thought it was very interesting. I must say Google has it happening! I guess these guys are on a mission to have all the data known to mankind under one roof.....Google. Kind of "Orwellian" don't you think? Have you read George Orwell's "1984"? Where George Orwell made his mistake though, was thinking that the Totalitarian State would take over, when the current reality is it may very well be the private sector. Google. What if Google, being the dominant search engine and disseminator of information
