Active Rain Groups - The Use of "REALTOR" in Group Names - 05:45 PM
I just read an article on Inman News about a group on Facebook that was forced to be taken down by the REALTOR who started that group.  There are 2 issues involved with that group - the use of the local REALTOR association's name and the association's initials were used for the group's name, and the use of the term "REALTOR" in the name of the group.  That article is "Facebook group for Realtors forced to shut down over title".
We all know the National Association of REALTORS (NAR) has stringent trademark use policies in place, and those who choose to use them … (101 comments)

Is it bad to be OPTIMISTIC? - 12:12 PM
I had a fine year in 2007, but I was excited when 2008 came, because I want a great year, not just a fine. I was very excited that this could be a fresh start. I told everyone I know that the market has got to turn around now. I put my money where my mouth was. I doubled my print ads. I doubled my internet presence. I doubled my mailing efforts. I added a second buyers agent to my team. I joined active rain. All in all, I have doubled my time investment and my expenses and now my frustration … (124 comments)

Active|Rain listing finds Active|Rain Buyer! WOO HOO!! - 12:15 PM
A funny thing happened last Saturday when a member of my team, the Bradbury Team, was on floor duty...
A man walked into our office last Saturday looking for me.  ME!  I should post this to the MEME group!
His house was about to expire, and he of course was unhappy with his previous listing experience, as basically, his house did not sell.  He GOOGLED Real Estate agents in Quakertown, PA, and my name came up first.  It was a link to my  profile page from Active Rain, and also a link to the Quakertown page, where I am on the top of … (118 comments)

I played hooky today... - 05:51 PM
Well, I didn't completely skip work.  I worked from home with laptop and cell phone and actually made it to the office for a few hours late in the day.  But this morning we had snow.  I know, I know... you northerners don't see what the big deal is.  You think it's ridiculous that our schools shut down and everyone raids all the milk, bread, & eggs at the local grocery when we see a couple of flakes.  Maybe it is ridiculous.  But we don't usually get more than one or two snows a year... and you should see the looks … (72 comments)

Why You Cannot Be a Stager For 'Fun' - 12:05 PM
This post was actually written for and posted on my other blog, but I thought all of you would like to add your 2 cents in the comments.  I only posted 5 reasons, though there are many, many more I'm sure.  This is a subject that has been coming up a lot lately and will probably be discussed more in the future, but I just had to get it off my chest.  Please add whatever reasons you feel pertinent.

I was recently featured in an articlein one of our local newspapers.  It is not the first time this has occurred, … (51 comments)

Is there such thing as CHEATING on ActiveRain - 12:03 PM
In my recent (serious turned funny) post Blog For Sale, I made reference to a blog that I deemed, "not worth a dime".
At the time when I thought there really was a blog for sale and I knew which one it was, I was referring to a blog that was literally a "cut and paste" blog... with a lot of points! (this particular blog has been "dead" for a long time now- go figure).

My question is this, do you feel that some people take advantage of the system here on Active Rain?  I know there has been a lot of … (97 comments)

The Nobility of Arrogance Revisited - 05:44 PM
Earlier today I got a request from a friend to comment on a bolg I'd missed. His was the only reasonable comment on the page. But, there is always a "but" the subject couldn't be more serious! The blog was more PC than factual, and most of the comments were worse. All of which is why I revisited my own blog.
Arrogance is seldom thought of as a virtue, we all remember the school cliques, those self absorbed groups who believed in their own superiority. Most of these cliques were based on superficial non-senses, I believe we become who we associate with! … (58 comments)

What's In Your ActiveRain Blogging Future? - 12:02 PM

Where'd all the 'seasoned' ActiveRain bloggers go?  When I started there were the best of the best on ActiveRain. Yeah, things change and new bloggers come to life and became the best of the best. The ones I "grew up with" seem to be posting less and less or else they completely vanished.
In this writers mind there is one thing I know to be true. This blogging platform was given to me (to us) for free...to utilize respectfully in giving industry related information and material to others, inform the public, keep up to date with nationwide markets, receive some feedback, … (139 comments)

Bond market puts the smackdown on the US Treasury - Rates up - 01:58 PM
The treasury department periodically holds auctions to sell US Treasuries to fund the government debt.  Today they held one for 30 year treasury bonds and to put it simply, buyers didn't show up.  It was the worst auction results EVER for the treasury department with 90% of the bonds going to primary dealers.  Basically the bond market is giving the middle finger to the government over their projected increase in deficits and bail out plans which would both require issuing significant amounts of new debt.
The result was that this instantly spiked rates on the ten year treasury bond, which will in … (15 comments)

Everybody Need's Somebody! - 07:40 PM
When many homeowners decide that the time has come to sell their home, they may ask themselves:
"Why do we need a real estate agent? An agent will charge us thousands of dollars and that commission comes right off the top!"
Any real estate agent can give you an impressive list of reasons why it makes sense to hire a professional to help you sell your home, and from a marketing perspective, there are indeed many benefits in doing so. An experienced agent can utilize any number of marketing opportunities and strategies that the typical "For Sale by Owner" (a.k.a. "FSBO") does … (8 comments)

Watch Oprah Feb. 11th! - 07:27 PM
Has everyone heard of the "Angel Network" that Oprah Winfrey developed several years ago? Well there is currently a home being built in Seattle for a family that both my Father and Brother have had an opportunity to be working on (both plumbers for a company based in Woodinville named Bates Plumbing). So about a week ago Oprah sent a rep out to choose 5 plumbers, 5 electricians and 5 carpenters to join her on stage and thank them for their efforts towards her house. My Father, Merlyn Blue Jr and my brother, Andrew Blue were selected to be flown to … (3 comments)

Political Elert--Romney is suspending his campaign - 12:18 PM

Because he feels if Obama or Clinton win the Presidency they would pull out of Iraq he is suspending his part in the race so that the Republicans will have a better chance of winning the election. Here is what ABC is saying about it.

He is Two Years Old Today - 02:09 PM

You all have put up with my updates about my grandchildren.  Haiden, my first one has been such a blessing and such a joy to watch--it is so hard to believe that today he is two years old.  I always thought life was boring before I had children--but grandchildren, to me, is about the future, possibilities and just sitting back and watching development.
His little brother is great also, but he is only 7 1/2 weeks old and it is not his birthday!
If you don't have grandchildren (and wish you did), there are things you can do to fill the void.  Schools often … (7 comments)

Money Moniter: Keeping an Eye on Energy Costs - 09:22 PM

Though by no means ubiquitous, household energy monitors have been around for some time. A few new entries into the space, however, add a splash of colour and style to make understanding energy consumption more intuitive according to this little round up from the folks at Springwise.
Wattson, first of all, is a sleek, aesthetically pleasing device that shows homeowners through both numbers and colours how much energy they are using in their home. Consumers begin by attaching to their electricity meter or fuse box a transmitter device, which can measure both single and 3-phase systems. That, in turn, beams information directly … (0 comments)

Consumer Confidence or Downright Denail? - 09:33 PM
Despite repeated highly publicized reports of a home sales slump and pricing slides, there's a surprising amount of positive consumer sentiment, says RISMedia - and perhaps a good measure of homeowner denial as well: Even in a negative home pricing environment, 77% of homeowners from around the country believe the value of their home has increased or remained the same in 2007, according to a recent Zillow.com survey conducted by Harris Interactive(R).What's more, sizable fractions of all homeowners - not just those who believe their homes appreciated in 2007 - say they are planning to do things in 2008 - even before … (0 comments)

My New Blog Hero(ine) - 05:58 PM
I have a new idol in the world of real estate blogging and her name is Rachel Klein.
Now I just have to figure out how to have the time to do in my market what she has done with NYC.

By the way, I am enjoying reading all your responses to my blogs.  I have my opinions and how glad I am we do not live in a world where we all have the same opinions.

Would you buy a used car from this man? - 10:29 PM
This is radical Muslim cleric Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Masri. He is currently serving seven years in a British prison, but the even better news is that soon he will be welcomed to America where he will face up to 100 years behind bars.
The British Home Office agreed on Thursday to extradite Hamza to the United States, where he faces terrorism charges linked to the setting up of an al Qaeda camp.
The Home Office decision follows a court ruling on November 15, 2007, when a judge ruled there was nothing to prevent Egyptian-born Hamza, 49, being sent to the United States to … (5 comments)

Tips On Living Green - 09:41 AM
Here are some tips on how to "go green" and help the earth just a little bit more.  Every little bit counts and anything you can do to help will help in the long run.  Of course, the more you do, the better for everyone.
Please consider doing some of the following things.
Install low-flow shower-headsPurchase only compact fluorescent light-bulbs (CFL's)Walk or ride a bike instead of driving a car.  If you have to drive, try taking the bus or carpool.Instead of purchasing new books, go to your local library and check out books and movies there.Buy from Farmers Markets instead of purchasing … (2 comments)

Austin Neighborhood : Bryker Woods - 08:15 PM
Just a few miles from downtown Austin, bordered by Westover on the south, 35th street on the north, Shoal Creek on the east and Mopac on the west, lies the old Austin neighborhood of Bryker Woods.
Though the neighborhood was named in the 1930s, the origins of the area go back as far as 1886, when the 14 lot William Thiele subdivision was platted within one block between 34th and 35th streets, which still exists today. In the early 1900s, other subdivisions popped up nearby, like Camp Mabry Heights, which named its streets with a patriotic theme, such as Pershing … (0 comments)

What Politics in 2008 can teach our Industry about Confronting Change - 03:27 PM
The Republican primary in the state of Michigan was held this past January and the way that the two leading candidates approached this primary provides a fascinating primer on how real estate will fare in the next few years, depending on our reaction to the systemic changes that confront us.
Like much of the real estate industry, Michigan is in the doldrums, to put it mildly. In fact, many economists have describes Michigan as having been caught in a "one state recession" for quite some time now. Leading up to the primary, the two leading candidates took very different approaches in … (0 comments)
