My Activerain Blog is Sending Business to Lynchburg Business Owners - 02:04 PM

Small business is the backbone of our economy and small business is hurting. In 2009, I've committed to doing all I can to promote the businesses that make Central Virginia what it is. I've written a lot of posts on local businesses; nothing special, just a profile or an endorsement of their product or service. What is exciting to me:
These businesses are being contacted by the public & have new clients-because of my Activerain blog.

-A lady decided to buy a co-workers home and googled closing agency, lynchburg. She found my blog on Pioneer Closing … (110 comments)

The metamorphosis of fantasy to reality ... but when is the reality check coming? - 07:54 AM
When I was a lad, I read science fiction novels that were set in a future rife with marvelous technologies mined from the deepest recesses of creative artist's imaginations. The boundaries of space and time were not hindered by physical realities, but only by the reader's own limitations on what might actually be possible after given years to create and develop.
I remember showing my mother an advertisement in a magazine that claimed that an oven powered by microwaves could fry crisp bacon in ninety seconds. Mother laughed, and said it was just a gimmick to steal people's money, because such a … (64 comments)

ActiveRain Mission Statement: Help us create it - 08:15 AM
I asked our team to come up with a mission statement today.  Although they were not very happy with the short deadline, on a Friday no less, they all pitched in and came up with some good ideas. Now I am taking these ideas to our membership to help us refine what we currently have and hopefully eventually derive at the perfect statement that crystallizes where we will take our network.

The only parameters that I established was that it must be shorter than 30 words.
Here are some of the possibilities our team came up with:

What Comes First? The Comment Or The Blog Post? - 08:42 AM
What Comes First- The Comment or The Post? You just joined Active Rain after reading some posts and now you are ready to jump in and start participating in the Active Rain Community. So you spend time doing research on a post to write, you spend 2 hours writing your first post on your blog, you hit the publish button with sweaty palms nervous about that very first time! Then you sit there at your computer refreshing your home page to see if you get any comments. Alas! No one comes! Your post becomes lonely and you wonder why no one … (113 comments)

My New AR Upgraded Blog Rocks! And my new address is Google! - 09:37 AM
I am technology declined.  I was the last kid on the block to learn to ride a bike.  I drove my Volkswagen beetle in 2nd gear for the first year.  I was afraid of left turns so I kept making right turns until I had my destination surrounded.  When I text message to my daughters, they call and say what language is that?
But I always read Brad Andersohn's posts and get really excited about whatever new feature or website he might be telling us about.  I am competitive by nature, and aggressive by profession.  So I always try stuff - … (129 comments)

I've noticed something and am not sure if anyone else has but in reading many blog posts.. I noticed...either non-members are commenting or members are forgetting to log in!

Interesting don't you think?
Is it that comments without links are non members or are they members just not logging in?
Looking at my traffic and where it is coming from...
I think there is a good chance that there might be more non members commenting on our posts...
If that is the case...
I try never to miss an opportunity..yup here it goes....

Excuse me.....we aren't the enemy.....we could use a little help here. - 06:47 PM
Yes. I am talking to you. You may not think that I heard you when you complained about all the bail outs going on. You may think no one heard you when you complained about the neighbors that showed up with two or three families in that house next door. You may think that paying your mortgage on time will help keep your home values reasonably secure.
WELL. I did. Someone did. It won't.
Oh, you aren't sure who I am or why I am talking to you like this.
Let me refresh your memory.

Relocating- First Hand Experience Part 15 - 01:52 PM
Here are some of the latest pictures taken of our house.  As you can see, the scaffolding has been put back up in the front to get ready to tear down the elevation and redo it. I can't wait for it to look correct!
We also have the new delivery of the rest of the brick so they can finish the back of the house and also redo the front porch area.

We also have our insulation throughout the house.  We upgraded to insulate the entire garage since Mike uses it as a workshop year 'round too, … (9 comments)

Recommended Short Sale Training? - 06:32 AM
Tisza's post here about some major short sale headaches brought a question to mind.
One of Tisza's complaints is that many agents simply do not know what they are doing when it comes to a short sale.
And that made me think of all the spam emails I receive announcing various short sale training seminars.
So my question, has anyone attended one of these seminars/classes?
Are they teaching you anything you didn't already know?
Or are the seminars mostly put on by people just trying to make a buck off the current market situation?
If you thought a particular class or seminar … (4 comments)

Which Digital Converter Box? - 07:48 AM
OK.  So sometimes I get really busy, and I kinda let my own personal stuff slip.   And that's how I managed to misplace my convertor box coupons.  Did you know they can't be replaced?  Oops.
Coupons cannot be reissued. If you have requested one coupon, you may be eligible to receive another. If both coupons have been lost or stolen, or you have requested both coupons, used one, and the other coupon is lost or stolen, by law we are unable to reissue coupon replacements. While it is illegal to sell coupons, giving a coupon for free to a family member, friend, … (5 comments)

Become a BPO & REO Specialist - 01:10 PM
Foreclosures are here to stay for quite a while and as much as we hate to admit it, it is true.  Becoming a BPO and REO Specialist is going to give you the additional skills that are pretty much required if you want to stay ahead of your competition and survive in this tough market.
I found this great BPO Kit that helped me understand how to get started in this market.  It provided me the forms and the process to become a specialist and make some extra money.
Here is the link, go check it out.

January, 2009 Wichita Houseing update - 10:05 AM
Wichita housing and economic update

Kansas ranked 6th in the nation for new jobs in 2008.  Only 14 of the 50 states had an increase in total jobs with the majority being located in the central United States.  Texas had the largest increase in jobs surpassing all increases in the other 13 states.

Unemployment in November was 4.7% in the Wichita metro area. This rate is well below the national unemployment rate and well below the 2003 unemployment rate of 8.3% in 2003 caused by the 9/11 terrorist strike and subsequent reduction in commercial aircraft orders.  The recent … (0 comments)

Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools Release 2008 Reading Results - 08:12 AM
Chapel Hill-Carrboro School students continue to outperform their counterparts across North Carolina in reading, despite a drop in reading test performance as a result of significant changes made this year in the tests given to students grades 3-8.  These changes include setting higher standards for attaining proficiency.  These changes resulted in 78.5 percent of CHCCS students posting proficiency in reading compared to 93.4 percent in 2008.  The drop in scores in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro district is approximately ½ of the decline that has been seen statewide.  Raising standards is of course a good thing, but it will take a year or two … (0 comments)

19 Days and Counting: UNC/Duke Basketball Rivalry: 2009 - 08:16 AM
Countdownr
Oh what a difference a week can make.  This week we've seen Carolina rise to 3-2 in ACC conference play with wins over Virginia, Miami and Clemson.  Duke remains unbeaten in ACC play with a win over NC State and also a non conference win over Georgetown.  The excitement is building towards THE game of the year thus far, the 2009 matchup between UNC & Duke on March 8.  The students at Duke have not let this weeks snow deter them from camping out at Krzyzewskiville either.  Students have been camped out for weeks now to get those precious … (4 comments)

Plans for the new Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Elementary School #11 Moving Ahead - 08:21 AM

Despite the economic recession, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School system is continuing to move forward with the plans for the 11th elementary school. The new elementary school is proposed to be built in the Northside neighborhood between Caldwell and McMasters streets (this is very close to downtown Chapel Hill).  The first step in the development process, the concept plans, were submitted to the Town of Chapel Hill in December.  School Board Chairwoman Lisa Stuckey cautiously acknowledged that plans could change.   The school is tentatively scheduled to open in the August of 2011.  I will continue to discuss the progress on the development of this school.  … (0 comments)

Carolina North Meeting Filled with Tension - 08:26 AM
This past Wednesday, the Chapel Hill Town Council members and members of the UNC-Chapel Hill's Board of Trustees disagreed over what should be done with the remaining 750 acres of the 1,000 acre Carolina North site.  UNC plans to build an academic and research campus on 250 acres of the site, but would not agree to permanently preserve the remaining 750 acres of land as many on the Town Council want.
I live across the street from this tract of land.  It is a very beautiful piece of property with wonderful walking, mountain biking and running trails.  It is actually more property … (2 comments)
