Week ahead... - 09:59 AM
The treasury borrowing a total of $102B in 2 yr, 5 yr, and 7 yr notes; the total is $2B less than last month’s series. On the economic calendar July existing home sales are thought to have plummeted 13% while new home sales are expected to be up 3.0%. Existing home sales in June dropped 5.1%, following a 2.2% decline the month before. Sales for the latest month (June) came in at a 5.37 million annual rate and are up 9.8% on a year-ago basis, compared to up 19.2% in May. New home sales made much more of a comeback than … (0 comments)

Jobless Claims Update... - 10:00 AM
The week also has those weekly jobless claims; as of this week-end the expectations are for claims to decline 15K frm 500K to 485K. Markets will also get the Q2 GDP revision expected to be at +1.4%, down frm 2.4% reported last month in the advance release. Look for the rate markets to continue testing current low yields with the potential of some back up with the levels of rates now at such low levels investors may be backing off. The demand for this week’s auctions will be a measuring stick; weak demand for the three auctions will likely send rates … (0 comments)

The Yield - 10:01 AM
With investors shying away from equities and looking for safety and the best rates possible. The 30 yr bond is the focus; its yield continues to decline, last Friday the 30 closed at 3.86%, this morning the rate is 3.62% down 24 basis points while the bellwether 10 yr rate has declined just 11 basis points and mortgages are unchanged on the week.

Longterm.. - 10:03 AM
Since mortgage rates have basically moved (lower) at will for the majority of the summer, I think we should stop and call attention to the times when mortgage rates actually react to economic data. Not because I feel the bond market is trying to tell us the economic environment is fundamentally worse or better (LONG TERM OUTLOOK),  but because I think the bond market is telling us it is looking for some directional guidance (SHORT TERM OUTLOOK).

Global Economy - 10:06 AM
The momentum is increasing that global economies will take much longer to recover than what was thought as recently as a month ago. We have warned for months that the euphoria surrounding the economic recovery was overdone. The same story, so simple but so overlooked in favor of arcane banking issues and sovereign debt problems; consumers are not spending, the US housing industry is still in deep recession with the outlook no better, and after a massive inventory build that was the driver for the ideas we could have a swift recovery is now over, unemployment showing no signs of recovery, … (0 comments)

The Whuffie Factor: Do you have it? - 02:02 PM
The Whuffie Factor: Do you have it?
Imagine a world where money doesn’t exist. Where all the necessities & luxuries in life are free for the taking. Where everyone can see what you’re worth because they've been given the ability to interface with the Net. Where your reputation is based on a person’s favorable or unfavorable actions, which is determined on public opinion. Where your reputation is measured by Whuffie.
Well, you’re in it. Online, that is.

The term Whuffie comes from Cory Doctorow’s science fiction novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, and it’s now being related … (22 comments)

When Has Social Media Gone Too Far? - 05:17 PM
When Has Social Media Gone Too Far?
Depending on an age demographic of an individual in their 20's or someone in their 50's, you will get widely diverse opinions on the use of social media like blogging, Twittering, Facebook, and even just using mobile devices BEYOND smartphones with email but relying more heavily on texting. Many of the older folks view too much of it as a waste of time while younger folks "can't live without it" and are as transparent with their personal lives as a glass of water.
The real answer is there is no right answer.

The Wild Ponies of Assateague Island - 07:34 AM

All States have their areas of natural beauty. Maryland is no exception. Out on the Eastern Shore of Maryland is a wonderful little island, operated and maintained by the National Park Service, Assateague Island.
This paradise island is a place to enjoy white sandy beaches, take Marsh and Forest tours, study ecology, camping, and of course, a visit with the Wild Ponies.
There are two herds of Wild Ponies on Assateague Island. They have the run of the island and we humans are just visitors. There is a sister island in Virginia, Chincoteague Island, which also has its own herd … (52 comments)
