Singer Island and Turtle Nesting - 02/27/07 06:27 PM
Singer Island, Fl is one of the prime areas for Sea Turtle nesting.  Over 3000 nests a season of Loggerhead, Green and Leatherbacks can be found. The turtles can lay as many as 100 eggs at a time, as many as 5 times a season.
From  March through October volunteers walk the beach every morning montoring and marking the nests.
The turtle sex is determined by the heat of the sand during its 55 to 60 day incubation.  A three degree difference separates males from females.

Created from the spoils of the original dredging that were deposited on a shoal in Lake Worth.  This beautiful island isnow known as Peanut Island.  79 acre county park which has 19 boat slips boat dock,40 grills,60 picnic tables,6 pavillions, 20 campsites and a 170' Fishing pier. For years Peanut Island housed the Coast Guard Station from 1936 to 1995.  During the Kennedy Administration, a bomb shelter for the president was built on the island for his use when he vacationed at his family's estate in Palm Beach.  It is now open open for tours after being renovated.

A Nature Conservatory donated by John D. MacArthur is located at the Northern end of Singer Island, Florida.  Covering over 225 arces of land with and additional 535 acres of submerged land.  The park has two miles of private beach with a limestone reef. A nature museum,picknicking,many trails are available to the public. Also some great boating and fishing within the park.
The park has many species of birds, small animals and trees.  The park provides a very informative nature tours and turtle watching tours during season.  Turtle season runs from March to October.

Singer Island boast of wide, sandy beaches and that it is the closet land in the United States to the warm blue waters of the Gulf Stream. Weather is a normal average daily temperature of 75 degrees with an average High of 82.9 degrees and a low of 66.6 degrees.
The Island is about 5 miles long by 1/2 mile wide with an area about 1500 acres. There are two entrances, the Blue Heron Bridge crossing Lake Worth on the South end from Riviera Beach and from the North end from PGA Boulevard.
