Facing the loss of a family member or friend is often devastating. Imagine the constant reminder of the dearly departed as they appear through social media on your Facebook Timeline or Google+ Circle, in your Twitter Feed or MySpace stream, or even at work on your LinkedIn profile.
I was reminded in a private message last week that one of the highly respected politicians receiving birthday greetings from me on Facebook had died last year. A quick update to “Happy Birthday in Heaven” hopefully fixed this.

Many people live long after they're gone through social media. There is no such thing as a digital death.
Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and many other major social media sites have policies regarding the death of its users. Are you familiar with them?
While losing a family member, friend, colleague, classmate or connection is often painful, imagine the reminder of the dearly departed when they appear on your Facebook Timeline, Twitter Feed, MySpace Stream or LinkedIn profile. This is especially so when the deceased user is received as a “friend recommendation" through mutual friends.

What is your good name and reputation in the community worth? Are you being represented correctly on the Internet through the Google, Yahoo, Ask, AOL or Bing search engines?
Not sure how you rate on the search engines? Go ahead and check the first 20 listings on Google. Depending on how common a name you have, the results are likely to produce links to your Facebook, LinkedIn, Naymz, Twitter, MySpace or other social networking accounts. Losing a friend or family member is painful enough, but imagine when that friend's social networking profile at Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace continues to appear on your personal wall or in searches.
In the digital age, many of us publish our entire lives through profiles, status updates, networks, photographs, blog posts, etc. With more than a million social networkers dying yearly, family, friends and service providers are stuck trying to figure out how to deal with a deceased user's digital bits.
