retirement: How Many Blogs Can A Blogger Blog? - 08/16/14 02:55 AM
How Many Blogs Can A Blogger Blog?
That title bets for a joke, but I am in a sincere and grateful mood, so will leave that for another time.
So a year with Active Rain taught me a lot of things about blogging. I did a few months of blogging every day in the monthly challenges, participated in blogging contests, took Bob's wonderful seminars about blogging and read many excellent posts about SEO, content, templates, links, and the helpful suggestions about what to blog about.  I think I certainly got my money's worth, because when I joined I was just looking for … (8 comments)

Speechless Sunday - Fun and Golden Games

Sometimes as we get older, we forget to take the time to have fun.  We stop getting outdoors and playing simple games that bring us joy, exercise, and fresh air shared with others we like. This last week there was the Bocce tournament part of our Golden Games open to those age 50+ Many participants were much older and some even in their 90s.  One good thing about retirement is that it gives you time to enjoy some things which has been missing for a long time.

retirement: My Personal Weltanschauung For Transition To Retirement - 03/16/14 12:42 AM
My Personal Weltanschaung For Transition To Retirement
One of the March challenges is to create our own personal Weltanschauung and as I continue to transition to retirement, I thought about the guiding principles and philosophies that guide me towards that goal.
Retirement Weltanschaung
1. I believe Retirement is a good thing, well deserved after a lifetime of work. It is something that should be enjoyed and be an exciting part of ones life.
2. I believe you should retire to something; not from something. Looking forward to new adventures, life long learning, maybe a new career in something one likes to … (11 comments)

retirement: Retire to the Lowcountry SC | The Ponds - 02/13/14 01:01 AM
Retire to the Lowcountry SC | The Ponds

Last year I traveled to the Lowcountry of South Carolina and discovered what a wonderful place it was to visit. It was so relaxing and the scenery was absolutely beautiful.
We even rode around and looking at retirement homes and found out we were not the first people to have that idea.  Don't get me wrong, it is not crowded, far from that. But the Lowcounty offers so much that is appealing more and more people my age are moving to the area.
On 55 Community Guide we just discovered the outstanding community of The … (4 comments)

retirement: North Georgia: More Than A Pumpkin Patch - 10/20/13 01:26 AM

Don't you love all the pumpkin patches around at this time of year.  It seems every church and community center has a pumpkin patch where you can visit, buy a pumpkin and more. It really does add to the festive atmosphere of the Fall season and with the turning leaves and cool air rolling in.
This week our friends Larry and Dorothy took us up to North Georgia to JAEMOR Farms Market where they had all the pumpkin attractions and a lot more.   I discovered an attraction in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains that is a great place to … (10 comments)

retirement: Lessons Learned From Travel Bloggers - 10/12/13 04:59 AM
Travel bloogers meeting with AARP staff
You may know I was invited to the AARP event in Atlanta with about 10 of the top travel bloggers /web sites and some like me that cover baby boomers and retirement too.  I hung out with these guys for three days and learned quite a bit about blogging and I will share a few things here.  This was not a training session on blogging but my observations of seeing them in action.  They were good!
1. Use Instagram. With their smart phones, they could take a picture with Instagram, improve it, and share in not … (14 comments)

retirement: Best Small Towns Draw Retirees - 09/18/13 09:02 PM
Best Small Towns Draws Retirees

These days you read that cities are growing and small towns are disappearing.  Young people are moving to the cities to get a job.  That is what I did 40+ years ago, so I understand that.  But the best small towns have a lot to offer and retiring to one of them is appealing to a lot of folks, especially retirees.
Advantages of the Best Small Towns
Small towns are affordable and that is worth something in  today's economy and also in our retirement.
Technology has greatly improved the appeal of moving to a small … (7 comments)

retirement: How To Choose Your Retirement Destination - 09/15/13 05:01 AM

There is an interesting article in the WSJ about how to choose your retirement destination with the explanation "The Experts weigh in.".   They had my interests until I saw some of the experts included Suzanne Somers and Morgan Fairchild.  Wow, just wow.
However the expert list did include creditable people like Joseph Coughlin of the MIT Age Lab also and reading through the article there are some really good points.
Suzanne Somers says you should pick out a community not based on age because all 65 year olds are equal, many are on oxygen, some in wheelchairs, and have medical … (7 comments)
