I have my two escrows on track enough to take the family on a two day vacation to the mountains (thank goodness for the good iPhone reception). We stayed in a cabin for a couple of nights at Big Bear Lake.

Big Bear Lake is a great four season resort. We all know about the skiing and snowboarding opportunities around Big Bear Lake in the winter, but summer is just as fun. It took just two hours to get there from my house in Anaheim (near Raymond and the 91 freeway) and only about an hour and 45 minutes to get home (no tire chains needed in summer, of course). My son went swimming in the lake for the first time. He loves the water but the ocean is sometimes too rough for a baby. We are very privileged here in Southern California to have so many different outdoor recreation choices. I'm heading to Irvine Regional Park tomorrow morning to participate in the monthly Adopt-A-Park program with the OC Regional Parks.

Environmental Community Service Opportunities in Orange County

Volunteers from the Peace Centered Education Society help facilatate environmental community service projects with the 'Adopt-A-Park' program in the Orange County Regional Parks. Currently the volunteers are meeting on the second Saturday of each month to plant trees and cactus, do hiking trail work and habitat restoration.

Where: Irvine Regional Park in the city of Orange

When: Saturday August 14, 2010 (every second Saturday of the month)

Times: 8:30 - 11:00 AM - Habitat restoration volunteers (meet the Ranger in the parking lot)

          10:30 - 12:00 noon -  Lunch crew (set-up and clean-up)

Lunch will be provided for volunteers and families in group area #1 next to the zoo entrance.

Orange County gets a new non-profit English Tutoring Center in Garden Grove, Orange County California

A new non-profit Tutoring Center with private tutoring and small group English tutoring was recently opened in Garden Grove. The center used to be located in Fullerton, CA but they have recently expanded to a larger location.

Small Group Classes (3-6 students) is $10 / hr.

Semi-private Tutoring (1-2 students) is $15 / hr.

The International Culture and Language School offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, as well as TOEFL and SAT and ACT test preparation tutoring. Some English language learners are studying business English and pronunciation classes in a small group setting. Because this is a non-profit learning center, the price is very affordable but the quality of instruction is top notch. The teachers are very qualified with Master's degrees or at least a Bachelor's degree with a teaching credential plus many years of experience. Students can learn how to write professional business letters and resumes, practice leading a group discussion or a business meeting. Also, American customs and mangement style will be discussed. Students practice pronunciation and accent reduction in a friendly peaceful learning environment.
