Many people not familiar with Albuquerque believe that Albuquerque is in the desert much like Phoenix AZ or Tulsa.  Yes, Albuquerque is in a desert but a very High desert, in fact the lowest point in Albuquerque along the Rio Grande river and Bosque is approximately 4,900 feet, however the foothills of the Sandia Mountains which border the east side of Albuquerque are about 6,000 feet. There is an interesting word utilized here in the High Desert of Albuquerque NM known as Xeriscape pronounced (Zeri-scape) The word actually comes from the Greek Xeros (Dry) and landscape.  A lot of people incorrectly pronounce it as Xero or Zeroscape.  Xeriscape is certainly not zero landscape in fact it can be quite pleasing to the eye. high desert: High Desert Cacti in Bloom - 05/05/12 09:23 AM
Our morning walk greeted us today with this gorgeous High Desert Cacti in Bloom.  This is a Scarlet “Claret-cup” Hedgehog Cactus.  Now you would not want to trip over or fall into this thorn bearing beauty but she was sure enjoying the morning sun.  Here in Albuquerque we enjoy many variety of High Desert Cacti in Bloom.  Hummingbirds and Bees really enjoy these nectar rich blossoms.

There is an odd word utilized here in the High Desert of Albuquerque NM known as Xeriscape.
