Escena Palm Springs reopens at last - 10/30/09 12:04 PM
Escena Palm Springs is back in business! The home-sales office reopened in July, the panoramic golf course will reopen in November after reseeding and the brand-new clubhouse will debut in December. Good news all around. The jazzy, retro-themed development debuted in mid-summer 2006 with lots of fanfare since it was Palm Springs’ first golf-course community in almost two decades. Together builders Lennar and Standard Pacific proffered 15 floorplans in five mini-communities—all united by a breezy, evocative-of-the-‘50s bubbles logo and sleek marketing. I still play the custom CD of eclectic music handed out by the sales staff.

Saturday breakfast outing to Panera Bread in La Quinta - 10/24/09 11:31 PM
I realized with a start that Saturday-morning breakfast at Panera Bread in La Quinta has become de rigueur for my husband and me. The warm ambiance, cheerful service and yummy fare are constants in an inconstant world and I am instantly cheered upon crossing the welcoming threshold. This morning I chatted up manager Ralph Sidorowicz while imbibing my first cup of aromatic coffee (whose brew-time is trumpeted on each urn). An outgoing, affable man who befriended us way back, Ralph exemplifies Panera’s customer-centric approach. He riffs on the company’s cultural values—greeting customers by name, anticipating their needs—and adds, “It’s not a (1 comments)

Hiking the Coachella Valley Preserve - 10/16/09 02:53 PM
October could easily contend for the perfect-month award here in the Palm Springs desert. If not for the month-long reseeding of lawns and golf courses—and the attendant ubiquity of forlorn expanses of brown—the days and evenings are pitch-perfect for eating and entertaining al fresco, enjoying the garden, not worrying about finding a shady spot for your car, and watching the pets savor the bucolic mornings. When I read about the nascent winter weather encroaching on other states, I remind myself how lucky I am to live in this unique paradise.

La Quinta October Market Report - 10/11/09 08:49 PM
I commenced the hiking season this past week by tackling the Pushawalla Palms Trail in the 13,000-acre Coachella Valley Preserve early Thursday morning. Last week’s dramatic weather downshift into double digits prompted the urge to don my dusty hiking boots and explore our fabulous desert terrain with two girlfriends. It’s inspiring and humbling to be alone on a hilltop at 6:30 a.m. surveying the far-off desert valley and the at-your-feet canyon grove of California fan pans rising miraculously from the harsh alluvial sand because of deep-water seepage courtesy of the infamous San Andreas Fault.Saturday’s outing to Art Under the Umbrellas at Old (1 comments)
La Quinta's Art Under the Umbrellas decisively served notice today that the season has indeed begun. Under blazing bue skies and 90° temps, it is hard to believe other states have seemingly bypassed autumn for winter weather. Here in the east end of the Coachella Valley, I can see the recent infux of Canadians and others who have opted for sleeveless sartorial garb! I happily strolled the streets with my girlfriend, Marianne, salivating over artists new to me while listening to live music, enjoyed lunch al fresco, and left quite contented. Today marks the fifth season of the outdoor art (0 comments)
