When I noticed the "Big Head" statue in Canmore had been very tastefully decorated by the graduating class of Canmore Collegiate several thoughts went through my "head." Where were you in 1967 when oft-remembered songs from the famed duo of Simon and Garfield emerged from the award winning movie The Graduate? Now that we are well into the 2009 year, there really should not be any surprises. What I mean is the economy is what it is, "markets" are what they are and it's up to all of us to move forward. You will see from my March Market Update Chart that the number of sales this past month in Canmore is up for the third consecutive month. This is good. As I put together the final pieces for this month's newsletter, I do so with a heavy and saddened heart. I have just returned from the funeral of an acquaintance, business and a former Canmore Rotarian, Bob Schott. Bob passed away last week at the young age of 56. Cancer took another victim. Bob was the co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper.
Walking back to my office I chatted with other people in attendance at Bob's memorial service. While we agreed that 56 was such a young age to pass away, we also agreed that life is exactly what you make … (1 comments)

This past month saw the median single family house prices almost remain the same as March, but down over 8% from the same time last year. Non single family house prices have slipped a little since last year and down 5.5% from last month. The number of sales in each category has remained almost the same as last year, but down from 2007. As I have said in past newsletters, Canmore real estate will continue to be a good investment. We are only experiencing a slight adjustment, something we have not seen over the past several years. Eagle Story Freedom and Jeff Freedom and I have been together 10 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. Her left wing doesn't open all the way even after surgery, it was broken in 4 places. She's my baby. When Freedom came in she could not stand. She was emaciated and covered in lice. The data above shows a very interesting past month for real estate sales in Canmore. Actually this is the first time I can remember where we see negative percentages all over the chart. While activity is picking up this past week, as a whole the month of February had a total of 31 fewer sales than the same month a year ago. Single family sales are down from 11 sales to 5 and non single family dropped dramatically from 40 sales a year ago to just 15 this February.
