Come to Sandy UT - 09/30/11 10:03 AM
Come to Sandy UT Over the 30 days of September, and at other times throughout the previous year. I have provided you with copious detail to educate you on the real Sandy UT.
Rather than Sandy being a dot on a map of a Mountain State, you may have become familiar with its landscape, its people and some of its purpose.
Sandy is a stand alone place offering peaceful living in an area of great potential. Modern city living is combined with space to spread and grow. Living here, we have it all.
You may consider me parochial and biased. I … (6 comments)

A week into Fall in Sandy UT - 09/29/11 07:19 PM
A week into Fall in Sandy UT Seven days of excessive warmth, and one might expect to see a delay in autumnal signs. Nature appears to be running to a clock rather than a weather map.
The mountains of the Wasatch Front (remember from earlier instruction: the big mountains are to the east) are tinged with red. A landscape artist might resort to a pencil for rendition of the red, and in a few places a fine brush ~ but the changes are there. Soon it will be worth the glory of a trip up the canyons (this weekend is probably … (4 comments)

A interlude with a message - 09/28/11 08:15 PM
A interlude with a message This morning between appointments my wife and I watched (together, for once) the Jimmy (he was very young then) Stewart comedy "The Jackpot".
The movie was made in 1950.
I had first seen it as a youngster and the again twenty years later, before finding today that it appears to have a timeless message, The staggering jackpot of $24,000 in prizes might well be updated but the message of sudden wealth not satisfying immediate needs to get people out of a hum-drum existence, adding more than a few complications to the status quo, could make the … (4 comments)

Intermountain Corridor UT to Yellowstone Seismic Activity - 09/27/11 10:42 PM

Intermountain Corridor UT to Yellowstone Seismic Activity Yet another quiet week in earth moving activity in the Intermountain Corridor.
The map shows 21 earthquakes for the week from Southern Utah to north of Yellowstone.
Most of the events were between 1.5 and 2.0 ~ in the micro category.
Over the last month, activity has been relatively slight. I live at approximately the cross-over of the X drawn corner to corner on the map, in Sandy UT.
Events occur to the north and to the south at varying distances. Each week the pattern changes, suggesting that events might occur anywhere in … (4 comments)

Families assemble in Sandy UT - 09/26/11 10:07 PM
Families assemble in Sandy UT Monday evening in Sandy UT (in fact all over Utah) is fondly known by the majority of Utahns as Family Home Evening, a,without exception, gathering of the whole family for reflection, food, fun and games.
In my local area, my neighbors who are my age, recall family complements of eight children as being "average". In some cases they stopped counting at eight. With the larger families with older children, parking at the family home could become quite competitive, one car each (including Mom's) and a truck or two for general use, not even bothering with commercial … (7 comments)

An afternoon at the Southtowne Expo Center, Sandy UT - 09/25/11 08:56 PM
An afternoon at the Southtowne Expo Center, Sandy UT. Crossroads of the West Gun Show
In perfect weather, I made the trip overland in my three wheel scooter (a Rascal even) rather than take my van and spend more time searching for parking. It's only about a mile anyway. So my top speed works out at 5mph ~ perhaps downhill with the wind behind me.
I choose the dying hours of the Show as the press of the crowd is less, and I can get to see what I need to. The 2nd amendment is alive and well in Utah (after … (4 comments)

News Flash: Sandy UT proves to be a safe place to live. - 09/24/11 08:33 PM

News Flash: Sandy UT proves to be a safe place to live. Last evening saw the return of a selection of space junk.
After a fiery entry and a breakup into smaller pieces to ensure a shotgun effect the return of the debris proved to be a fizzer.
It missed us completely, all our citizenry, property and position were entirely untouched.
Local radio had reduced the odds of any specific person being hit from 1:21 trillion (haven't we heard of numbers of such magnitude in other fields recently) to 1:3000 of anyone getting hit.
Morning radio had the debris as … (3 comments)

Sandy UT has its own magic - 09/23/11 07:34 PM

Sandy UT has its own magic For a lot of this month (and before) I have been blogging on aspects of Sandy and its place in Utah. you have been introduced to civic happenings and a little of history of the place.
I live in Sandy (Historic Sandy is my neighborhood, a place of stories and beauty), great by choice or happenstance. I enjoy every bit of it.
I can tell you ever increasing things about Sandy; that would make you an armchair authority in time. It's now your turn to plan your visit.
You need to be here, to … (0 comments)

It's official, Summer's done - 09/22/11 09:02 PM

It's official, Summer's done An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator..(Wikipedia)
We are at the Autumnal Equinox, equal day and night, Summer changing to Fall. From tomorrow the days get shorter. (I have my stopwatch ready to check ;-} )
Warmth and cool will play with each other over the next few weeks until cool triumphs. The Jet Stream will move further south, birds migrate, weather maps use new numbers … (4 comments)

Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy UT 9266 S State St, SANDY UT, 84070
Rio Tinto Stadium is the home of Real (Ree - ahl) Salt Lake, a Major League Soccer Club.
The Stadium is described as a state of the art sports and entertainment facility. It was designed as a soccer-specific stadium, opened 10/09/08. It holds 20,008, all with excellent views of the pitch.
I live less than a half mile from the Stadium. On nights when Real Salt Lake is playing, traffic … (2 comments)

I do believe the leaves are changing - 09/19/11 10:02 PM
I do believe the leaves are changing Early days yet to confirm Fall is here.
However the evidence is building. Days without sweat soaked shirts, the appearance of wrinkled leaves, people wearing longer sleeves and even some "hoodies" not yet covering heads but still being worn, less irritating dust, a more pleasant commute with the window down, clearer air, easier personal hydration - it all counts.
And of course, there is plenty of evidence of football being played, and watched.
I make no pretense of understanding American football (although I will watch any good contest) having played Rugby (both League and … (8 comments)

A quieter week than most - 09/18/11 09:56 PM

A quieter week than most In my fairly unusual hobby of observing seismic activity (earthquakes) in my region, an absence of events does not have to be a bad thing. It is newsworthy in that the activity is well below weekly and annual averages.
The maps I read indicate for the last seven days the Intermountain West (Utah and Yellowstone) have recorded nineteen events with the largest at 2.6.
As well as indicating  the size of events, the maps are coded to show events that occurred in the last hour (red), last day (blue) and last week (yellow).
Nothing was … (5 comments)

Sometimes there are signs of improvement - 09/17/11 08:55 PM
Sometimes there are signs of improvement It was a lovely day in Murray UT - just the right amount of everything, sunshine and shade, flowers and green grass. And I believe in working open houses. More people pass me there than pass my desk the whole week.
My office has this 70s condo listing (cameo style development) that I took on at short notice barely scraping advice into the MLS yesterday. I had picked 1 - 4 pm. Between my looking at the property late yesterday and arrival time today, some 15 agents had left their cards and comments,  (and their … (10 comments)

Sudden weather change in Sandy UT - 09/16/11 07:41 PM
Sudden weather change in Sandy UT How quickly the weather can change as we approach Fall.
After so many blistering hot days, it is hard to believe that change might ever come.
Following a morning of sunshine, we received a hint of rain (Oh well, 15 drops to the acre again...) and an opening of the skies. But see, the mountains are shrouded in cloud, giving the Valley the appearance of having its sentinels stretch to the heavens, and definitely a cool change.
A rolling thunder and enough rain to need wipers...occasionally.  And then a darkness requiring headlights at 4pm. Enough … (5 comments)

Effects of Summer - 09/15/11 06:54 PM

Effects of Summer Day heat tempering, vehicular relief, cooler nights, not as much dust in the breeze; all signs of approaching Fall.
Do I detect more energy? Or is it that the days are shorter?
Tell me roadworks are becoming fewer
This has been my sixth summer in Sandy UT, my home for my Great American Adventure. I have acclimated to dry heat at altitude, and like a tree, addied another ring to my weathered appearance.
Our warm, very dry summer will slide into a pleasant cool. Fall will come with its brilliant colors and the gradual disappearance of leaves … (4 comments)

Come to the Utah State Fair It is on NOW (until 9/18) at the State Fair Park in Salt Lake City UT, 84116, 155 n 1000 w,
I was there all day yesterday and had a great time. Right amount of heat and sunshine, cloudless skies, just enough dust to get into the Utah State Fair mood.
The aromas of the cattle and sheep pavilions, really remarkably spotless, reminded that over the last few years of city-fication I have been excluding rural … (1 comments)

Last day of this season - Utah Healing Field - 09/13/11 11:13 AM

Last day of this season - Utah Healing Field Under warm sunshine, with hints of approaching Fall, the 3000 flags of the Utah Healing Field have stood since 9/08. This is their last day of this season, opposite the Sandy (UT) City Hall on 10000 S.
At times the flags were still, individual sentinels. At others, in gentle breezes, they took on a life of their own, producing a waving sea of patriotic color suggesting unity of purpose, and strength from adversity.

The breeze stirs the Utah 9/11 Memorial flag The Hope Rising 9/11 bronze monument will be our permanent reminder of 9/11 in Sandy UT when the Utah Healing Field with its 3,000 flags finishes its 10th anniversary season tomorrow evening.
The bronze memorial, located in front of Sandy City Hall is easily accessible by visitors. It was unveiled on 9/10/2011.
The memorial is already attracting large numbers of visitors evidenced by the increased traffic on 10000 South.
When you visit Utah, please … (1 comments)

To a new week - 09/11/11 09:20 PM
To a new week The day started calm,  peaceful and sunny.
After two allnighters, I appreciated the rest so that I can start the coming week at flash speed.
Even though last week started with a holiday, short weeks have accumulating demands and can be quite wearing. As mentioned in an earlier post, additional time was involved in having CL in hospital a mere 24 hours for a heart procedure, before returning to my care. (She is improving ~ with her heart rhythms getting back to normal)
Whilst I had a busy time, clients tended to be in holiday mode for … (5 comments)

The Children of Sandy UT The Utah Healing Field, located at 10000 S Centennial Pkwy Sandy UT presents an opportunity for local children to learn the powerful lessons of Sacrifice, Patriotism and Citizenship.
The children I saw at the Healing Field  yesterday would have been born post 9/11. Their interest went beyond mere curiosity, supported by intelligent questions that would leave the most mature struggling to provide meaningful answers.
I was impressed by their serious search for reasons for an attack on … (1 comments)

Healing Field, Sandy UT Every year since 2002, Colonial Flag Foundation has created a Healing Field across from the Sandy City Hall.
The Healing Field with its 3,000 flags marks the anniversary of 9/11/2001. Each of the flags (mostly US with two rows of foreign flags) with its attached name and details reminds us that the atrocity that is 911, was an attack on the world. I was particularly impressed by the youth of the victims. A lot of the cards I … (2 comments)

Appreciation for RainCamp Online - 09/08/11 09:56 PM
Appreciation for RainCamp Online Four hours of instruction passed very quickly - I am sure the benefits will linger for ages.
I liked the presentations, thought provoking all. and the efficient product messages. I  have enough notes to keep me going for a while. Along with screen shots, so easy with Picasa, these are likely to become a treasury of things to implement, short and long term.
My wife listened along with me. I think she sees herself as the implementation goad for the content gained. Together we appreciated the message of persistent effort.
I am glad that ActiveRain had the … (12 comments)

A Center of Excellence - 09/07/11 09:09 PM
A Center of Excellence The IHC Hospital is a landmark in Murray UT, just off State Street at 5300 S.
Its Heart Institute is located there at the Intermountain Medical Center. The hospital advertises excellence in the science of medicine, the spirit of caring, and the miracle of healing.
I pass the Hospital regularly, even meeting there monthly with my group "Amputees on the Move". I can attest to its modern beauty and excellent appointments. It is very new and ultra modern.
However, it is more intimate association that affirms that Institute lives up to its advertising.
Yesterday I delivered my … (2 comments)

West on I - 80 Holiday weekends allow for my exploration of my adopted State of Utah.
A 250 mile round trip let me explore Utah's western Port of Entry in West Wendover UT. Through strange rock formations, a twist in the road had us at Wendover NV, the wealthy neighbor.
The trip is one to be experienced. With dull overcast, dust storms of blowing salt, and incredible salt flats, it is not unlike travelling an imagined white landscape of a distant … (2 comments)

A day off... - 09/05/11 02:36 PM
A day off... The flags placed by our local Boy Scouts are out on front lawns, signifying a holiday. Half the day has been devoted to work, and there may be some more of that later.
A filled picnic basket in the kitchen suggests I am going on an outing for the afternoon. It is a chance to explore and unwind. With no great heat in the day we are in for a promising afternoon of light pleasure.
Perhaps I'll forget my phone...(not likely)
Hope you are all having a happy, funfilled holiday.

Nyah nyah ya missed me - 09/04/11 07:50 PM

Nyah nyah ya missed me Uh,oh that was close and nyah, nyah, ya missed me from Swat that Fly (Western Publishing Co Inc) make their way into my light hearted study of seismic activity today in Utah
Holiday weekend or no, earthquake activity continues in my area of interest as normal (or less than normal ~ a mere 24 incidents for the week, and relatively minor ones at that). All activity for the week has been in the micro or less ranges.
I realize that I have indulged in a flight of fancy by mentally superimposing the "Swat that Fly" … (2 comments)

A bit of something for everybody - 09/03/11 09:37 AM
A bit of something for everybody Our current growing season in Sandy UT looks like being shortened from both ends. We had snow falls into May and now the nights are indicating that the Cool is on its way.
The last several days have been decidedly cooler, and the summer heat has been tempered. A real lack of bees at blossom and flowering time has had a severe effect on garden produce.
Garden beds have begged for ever increasing amounts of water. After all, we are high altitude desert. Rain is measured in drops per acre.
Squash and zucchini are still … (8 comments)

Holiday weekend feelings in Sandy UT - 09/02/11 09:34 PM
Holiday weekend feelings in Sandy UT
Excitement in the air.
Afternoon traffic has intensity and purpose - more than the usual number of trailers and motor homes on the road and suuee-ee-zing into gas stations with the hesitancy of having not been driven for a while.
An holiday is in the offing.
More than the usual number of shoppers in supermarkets - snack foods seem a necessity, but any food is fair game.
Even temperature have declined a little, promising a beautiful holiday weekend in Sandy UT. Perhaps Fall is not too far off.
I harp on local feelings, because … (2 comments)

September challenge and localism I'm all for a challenge. It's rubber and road time. and there are others, equally insane, across the country, validating my instability of mind by joining me in this endeavor. And to think I have participated in several 30 day challenges before always ending with "never again" only to weaken with growing excitement.
With these challenges I learn a lot about people and lifestyles. With this dedication to Localism I expect to learn about places as well.
I promise you, come October 1, if … (8 comments)
