The Games of the XXX Olympiad - 07/31/12 12:51 PM
The Games of the XXX Olympiad Yahoo and other internet overloaded, Facebook and Twitter flaky, input to ActiveRain slowed down. Could it be the result of the XXX Olympics in London.

A two-week distraction that is a Summer/Winter event every four years.
Hours and hours of visual coverage and verbal comment, where everyone can become an (armchair) expert on everything from tiddly-winks to synchronized swimming, from sand scrapping to rhythmic gymnastics, from bark paddling to martial arts mayhem.
Longer in duration and effect than Royal Weddings/Funerals, or Innaugurations, and much more riveting than Political Elections. Such National fervor without bias … (2 comments)

Observation and Preparation - 07/31/12 06:12 AM
Observation and Preparation 37 seismic events (Earthquakes) for the last 168 hour (one week) period of observation. One event at 3.6 yesterday morning near Emery UT, in the minor earthquake category ~ the remainder registered in the micro category (with one at 2.3).

This is a week in the Intermountain West (Utah to Yellowstone). My hobby is observing seismic events in this area.
My choice of area is because I live here; information is readily available from the US Seismic Service at the University of Utah. My hobby is one of observation NOT prediction. My intent is to inform, never … (2 comments)

100 Day Attack - over the hump - 07/30/12 04:22 AM
100 Day Attack - over the hump A 100 Day Attack might sound like a punishment rather that a potential for renewal. My 100 Day Attack has a purpose and offers me  huge personal rewards.

Let's put 100 days in perspective. It sounds a fanciful number. In the next 100 days the Presidential Election will be run and won, harvests will be over for summer crops, there will be snow on the mountains again.
100 days will confirm or change history, with a squillion dollars injected into the economy through advertising, with increasing political comment adding distractions and hesitancy to … (3 comments)

Missing two disks. A consternation - 07/29/12 05:24 PM
Missing two disks. A consternation
I know where they were, I know when I last used them and what for; I know specifically how they are/were packaged. They are needed again, and I can't find them.
I have an aversion to buying things again that I already possess, especially expensive graphics disks.
To say that I have been thorough and systematic in my search is an understatement.
Still no disks.
Benefits along the way: I found a lot of things that I didn't know were missing and that needed attention (Out of sight~ out of mind). Lots of other interesting … (2 comments)

Thoughts on being a Real Estate Agent - 07/26/12 06:37 PM
Thoughts on being a Real Estate Agent
In the course of my activity, it is not uncommon for me to explain my business methods. This is a far cry from being asked to  justify myself.
In past eons I have been queried on being a hunter or a farmer, as though Real Estate has been with man since primitive times.
Part hunter: I look for clients who have problems and I solve those problems - for money.
Part farmer: I nurture my "farm" over long periods of time so that in the long term I can benefit from all my … (5 comments)

The Bigger Picture - 07/25/12 04:06 AM
The Bigger Picture
My hobby is the observation od seismic events (earthquakes) on a weekly basis in the Intermountain West.
My normal observation is the Intermountain Corridor (Utah to Yellowstone).
During the last week the US Seismic Service recorded 26 events (22 UT, 3 MT, and one yesterday in Leadore,ID, a 2.3) all in the micro range. Utah's largest event was also a 2.3 at Trenton UT, last Wednesday.
This week I have used the map of ANSS (Advanced National Seismic System) which nicely includes my major area of interest as well as recording activity in surrounding States. This map shows … (6 comments)

Pioneer Day in Utah - 07/24/12 08:35 AM
Pioneer Day in Utah In memory of the Pioneers We're having a holiday in Utah today. It's Pioneer Day ~ the Utah biggie. A day of Parade, picnics, family gatherings, lots of food and fireworks. It's a celebration of the Pioneer Heritage of Utah.
Today we remember the 70,000 pioneers who made their way, often under extreme hardship, from the east to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake to make their home in peace among the mountains of Utah. They came in wagons, or pulling handcarts, or walking, in all seasons, to achieve their dream and to make Utah into the … (1 comments)

Passion and a Plan - 07/23/12 03:53 AM
Passion and a Plan
Yesterday I spoke with John. He was looking for a sounding board.
He wanted to know how a double above knee amputee from another country could pursue a career as a Real Estate Agent in Utah. We talked, and I asked questions.
In reality, John was exploring his ability to step outside his comfort zone. He has had two trying years, one as an above knee amputee, with attendant down time, therapy and adjustment.
John had been a very active person, a fishing guide and hunter, and a ski instructor, getting to know the mountains of … (5 comments)

Quick and Easy Button Design - 07/22/12 05:14 AM
Quick and Easy Button Design
For about the last six years I have been known in Sandy UT as the Badge and Button Man, my initial self employment when I arrived in the USA for my last great adventure.
In that time I have experimented with various programs for designing buttons ~ some intuitive, some downright cumbersome.
Recently I trialed Build A Button from American Button Machines and have since become a subscriber to their on-line design center.
Backgrounds, Text, Photos and Shapes are all available to me, with lots of control in each. Easy to use, allowing lots of … (8 comments)

The Pebble Found - 07/21/12 04:27 PM
The Pebble Found The quote I had scribbled so long ago read "Be the Pebble in the Pond".

A yellow Post It that was now faded half across, a treasure part shielded from light and buried "neath a multitude of scraps, but unearthed again during a rare clean up throw out frenzy. (I was actually looking for two mis-placed disks. "I know I had them here somewhere")
When I wrote the words (Author Unknown) on the note, I was looking for inspiration for myself, a way I could make an impact and possibly influence others. The words suggest a great … (6 comments)

My 100 Day Attack - 50 Days gone already - 07/20/12 04:10 AM
My 100 Day Attack - 50 Days gone already
A 4am start is developing as a habit. I seem to beat my phone alarm by two minutes ~ eager to start the day with thoughts that other time zones are already hunting breakfast and a commute. (Remember ~ I chose mainly home office, with attendant disciplines).
Our cats are used to my exercise routines (mainly dumbbell - subject to my 1.1 multiplier for reps and sets) seeking only to request out at rest points. With increased lung capacity I am coping better with challenges of summer, smoke  and dust in … (30 comments)

Lunchtime serendipity - 07/19/12 05:22 PM
Lunchtime serendipity A delightful late lunch today at the Pei Wei Asian Diner at 10373 S State Street in Sandy UT.
I like shrimp (prawns to me) and they do them nicely with a coconut curry, vegetables and brown rice. It certainly hit the spot with enough leftovers for me to make a great dip later for reprise.
But the tale of the day was desert ~ a fortune cookie.

It was reading the same books as me.
A meal and an education at the same time. A great reason to go back

Keeping in touch - 07/19/12 06:57 AM
Keeping in touch My Sphere of Influence has been nurtured over time. My mentors stressed its importance in my business life - constant contact, mutual co-operation etc.

All of us have felt the effects of the last few years. All of us believe in a brighter future. We have vision - and hope.
My early morning meditations mentioned earlier, about the direction of my business have had the positive effect of allowing me to design a postcard, a talking point, for my Sphere of Influence. I am well aware that my local market ensures my livelihood: it is where I … (4 comments)

Outback Beans - a food review - 07/18/12 03:16 PM
Outback Beans - a food review In an attempt at levity, and to cure any perceived "home sickness" I was presented with a bag of Outback Beans the invention of Wiley Wallaby.

The picture on the bag says it all. The gift givers assumed the multo-colored candies resembled marsupial droppings. However, even on the most festive occasions, and us Aussies have a few, I have never known Wallabies (or Kangaroos) to be so flamboyant.
Perhaps they were referring to an ill-fated product of several decades ago called "Roo Poo".  It was even chocolate covered, but still not attractive enough to … (5 comments)

Another way here - 07/18/12 04:15 AM
Another way here For the past several years I have been enticing you to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, as a great place to visit, a wonderful place to consider as your family home.
We have our Highways, north to south, east to west. We live in second easiest State for a school kid to draw, and on all maps the name of the State fits within the State borders. Beauty abounds - our Parks and our Mountains invite.

Now I am offering you another way here - fly yourself in.
Our daughter does. She is a flight … (12 comments)

From meditation comes inspiration - 07/17/12 05:32 AM
From meditation comes inspiration I like to think.

With modern stresses this has become somewhat of a luxury - pushed aside by the urgent though not always the important.
The most productive parts of my life have been those where I indulged myself in considerable thinking  often combined with brainstorming and lateral thinking, using the advice of my round table of experts both real and imaginary.
I realize that this process is not something I have grown out of, but something that had been relegated to "later" until it has all but disappeared. Thought: it is really part of keeping … (5 comments)

Activity in the Intermountain West - 07/16/12 04:06 AM
Activity in the Intermountain West
Thankyou for joining me in my hobby of the observation of Seismic events (earthquakes) in the Intermountain West (Utah to Yellowstone). The period of observation is 168 hours.
The earthquake index map from the US Seismic Service shows 34 events for this period of one week.
Levan UT recorded eight of these events, in the micro range, four occurring in a 35 minute period on Wednesday. Mount Pleasant UT recorded five micros, and West Yellowstone four micros.
At just before 2pm last Friday, Trenton UT, near the northern UT border recorded a minor earthquake, a … (3 comments)

On the way up - 07/15/12 05:55 PM
On the way up At the beginning of 2012, I planned for an improving year.

I am sure we all did, after all who would plan for more of the same or for more belt-tightening.
With progress into the second half of the year, I am more than optimistic about achieving my goals.
Regular reviews allow me to tweak my figures, change plans and redistribute priorities.
In the last several days, I have encountered several in business who are awaiting their own personal revelation of "rock bottom", effectively paralysed , prevented still from doing business.
But the local mood is … (9 comments)

Is this a feeling of emptiness? - 07/13/12 04:24 AM
Is this a feeling of emptiness? Do not worry. I am energized, not depressed. In the course of my current 100 Day Attack - Day 41, to be exact, I utilized one of my Attack tools of making changes to my daiy process as a result of increased activity, observation and journaling.
I have indicated that my 1.1 multiplier in activity each ten days has been working successfully. Mini-goals have been achieved.
A post by Bill Fields, arrived at the right time. Inspiration on tap.

My house has a name. - 07/12/12 02:28 PM
My house has a name. The archives of ActiveRain (you do search for information topics, don't you?) indicate posts on this subject stretching back over five years. Chrissy Doremus yesterday queried the added value of a house name on your listing  http://activerain.com/blogsview/3372727/what-s-in-a-house-name-

My house name has historical significance.
My grandfather visited the US in 1910 on a working holiday, aa a sixteen year old, where he traveled from west to east over a 5 month period. He was in New York when the Earth passed through the tail of Halley's Comet.
You really have to be around to see this wonder in 1986. (He died in 1985) In … (3 comments)

Time waits for no man... - 07/11/12 04:13 PM
Time waits for no man... One of the joys of working from a home office is that when I need to get to work I am already there.. One of the drawbacks ~ I can easily always be at work.

While I can "close the door", at lesser intense moments, our cats can choose to amble throgh, suggesting, perhaps a door for egress, or just a plea for attention.
Similarly my wife is able to check up on proceedings, always offering helpful advice. Since a new printer came into her (separate) office life recently, I have become the recipient of … (29 comments)

Zipping right along there - 07/10/12 04:05 PM
Zipping right along there
Day 40 of my 100 Day Attack sees me with new habits. Business, health, mental focus are all showing definite signs of improvement. There's a lot to be said for programmed activity - persistent and consistent are the catchwords.
My best description of this 100 Day Attack is that it is like a much needed tonic. It is a joy to attack each day, especially when the results are so pleasingly obvious.
My multiplier of Effort x 1.1 each 10 days is proving achievable - and beneficial. I am fitting so-o much more into each day. … (3 comments)

Where, o where, did the little B go? - 07/06/12 01:00 PM
Where, oh where, did the little B go?
At first it was errant, leaving me with eautiful, etter attle etc.
Not a biggie. Usually picked up by Spell Check, and corrected by nudging B, encouraging B, and later pounding the daylights out of B to get a suitable response.
And some of the missing Bs were getting trhough in my posts and replies - how embarrassing.
Just shy of 400 posts and a quarter of million points, B had been loyal to me through thick and thin, at all hours of the day and night, always there.
But to go … (8 comments)

A week in the Intermountain West - 07/05/12 05:48 PM
A week in the Intermountain West My hobby is observing local seismic events, called earthquakes.

My area of observation is is the Intermountain Corridor. Utah to Yellowstone.
I live in Sandy UT, the geographical center of the observed area. My period of observation is one week (168 hours). My information is otained from the records of the US Seismic Service located at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
As usual any commentary that I make is designed to inform, and perhaps attract others to my hobby, never to alarm
From past records, the Intermountain Corridor records betwwe 20 … (2 comments)

We are sure to enjoy (controlled) fireworks at end of day.

Hit Song or Operetta - 07/03/12 02:14 PM
Hit Song or Operetta The trendy, the new word, is branding. Unless we achieve successful recognition on a continuing basis we are apt to be forgotten quickly.
Branding is successful when we become the "go to" person in our field.
I remember the world before KFC and McDonalds, before Nike and the Coca Cola version of Santa Claus. My early cereal choices were Wheet Bix (Nabisco) and Corn Flakes (Kellogs). The cereal madhouse started with a talking cereal, the "Snap, Crackle, Pop" of Rice Bubbles.
Every time I sit, in quiet despair, pondering how to be better remembered in my industry, … (6 comments)

After the fires - 07/01/12 04:14 PM
After the fires Smoke hangs in the air in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake today. In the afternon heat, the mountains of the Wasatch Front have taken on an unusual color of reddish brown instead of the summer green. Through the haze they appear almost myopic.
The Herriman fires are all but over with evacuees returning to their homes. There is extreme sadness for the five families who no longer have homes to return to.
Stories are emerging of survival of family pets that did not make the evacuation. One small boy expected to return to roast chicken, but … (4 comments)
