The romance of mineral fossicking continues in Utah
Coal, oil and gas may be the modern attractions. Let us not forget copper and gold and gems.
Utah is mineral rich.  To the west of me, and obvious every day the sun shines, is the Bingham Mine, the world's largest open cut copper mine, rich also in gold and silver.
The history of Utah reveals miineral wealth. In 1909, Sandy UT had 28 hotels and many other establishments to service its silver mining operations in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

utah: Weather change in Utah – It's SNOW - 11/09/12 09:52 AM
Weather change in Utah – It's SNOW After high winds last evening, followed by brief hail this morning, snow has been the order of the day here in Sandy Utah.
Sometime light, others heavy, small flakes, big flakes, not stopping yet, so the cover is building.
Garbage bins awaiting collection acquired white tops. Our vehicles got their own mantle of white as did neighborhood roofs. This is the time Utah takes on its tidy look.
It's not overly cold yet, but that will come.
Interested people who asked about my activities were informed that I was putting chains on my scooter … (5 comments)

utah: Pioneer Day in Utah - 07/24/12 01:35 AM
Pioneer Day in Utah In memory of the Pioneers We're having a holiday in Utah today. It's Pioneer Day ~ the Utah biggie. A day of Parade, picnics, family gatherings, lots of food and fireworks. It's a celebration of the Pioneer Heritage of Utah.
Today we remember the 70,000 pioneers who made their way, often under extreme hardship, from the east to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake to make their home in peace among the mountains of Utah. They came in wagons, or pulling handcarts, or walking, in all seasons, to achieve their dream and to make Utah into the … (1 comments)

utah: Passion and a Plan - 07/22/12 08:53 PM
Passion and a Plan
Yesterday I spoke with John. He was looking for a sounding board.
He wanted to know how a double above knee amputee from another country could pursue a career as a Real Estate Agent in Utah. We talked, and I asked questions.
In reality, John was exploring his ability to step outside his comfort zone. He has had two trying years, one as an above knee amputee, with attendant down time, therapy and adjustment.
John had been a very active person, a fishing guide and hunter, and a ski instructor, getting to know the mountains of … (5 comments)

utah: I can still be tempted - 03/11/12 08:01 AM

I can still be tempted. Now that I have lived in the land-locked State of Utah for the last five plus years, I have gotten out of the regular routine of seafood dishes, somehow associating seafood with a coastal experience.
My wife and I differ in our staple eating, but in the interests of household harmony I have been adapting to what is proffered (...and doing quite well, I might add).
All good things come to those who wait.
My Fridays now see me close to a magnificent cafeteria that includes a special of seafood (on real plates).
Fish and … (7 comments)

utah: When forecasters become uncertain - 03/07/11 11:34 AM
When forecasters become uncertain
For the last several weeks, we have been promised snow showers for at least a dozen times as comentators review coming weather for Utah, Weather Channel or local Station guess. The Saturday before last we had a dump in the Valley that caused minor disruption for a few hours - since then nothing, in spite of forecasters' dire predictions, and mention of daily storms.
Our mountain resorts continue to experience their finepowder drops to keep the national and international visitors content. The snow base varies, but 12 - 15 feet is not uncommon. We are treated to … (13 comments)
