We have all heard about the JetBlue flight attendant story.  A flight attendant named Steven Slater got fed up with an unruly passenger and cursed them over the intercom, and grabbed a beer before sliding down the emergency chute.

Peggy Noonan wrote about this Saturday August 14th in the Wall Street Journal.  She talks about how we were a great industrial nation and now we have shifted to service.  In the past 30 years we have said manners were sexist, or too fancy, or were biased.  Now we need them more than ever to know how to get along as we interact with each other daily.

Because we don’t know how to treat each other with manners we get on each other nerves.  Everyone wants to tell each other to take a hike, and like the song by Johnny Paycheck said “Take this job and shove it!”

Peggy Noonan made an interesting point in her article, she said that service people are taught to be rude.  She said she went through the X-ray machine in Washington at Regan National and the TSA agent was inappropriately familiar as she patted her down.  When she first gone through the machine, and then been manhandled, she was so taken back that she blurted, “WOW, that was embarrassing”.  She said it in a way to invite a mild commiseration of the “I know I’m sorry I have to do this.”  Instead the TSA agent said, “Have a nice day.”  She had been taught by consultants how to “handle” people like her.  The TSA agent had been taught to not let anything affect her and keep the line moving.

We all have been treated rudely, and shown no manners in the service industry.  Everyone gets on each other nerves.   We totally understand why Steven Slater got fed up, told off the rude customer, and pulled the chute!

Can you relate to Mr. Slater?  Have you ever been treated so rudely that you wanted to pull the emergency chute and say “bye bye!”

Real Estate is a service industry.  We pride ourselves on great customer service.  What do you do to make sure your customer feels like they are getting great service?
