Five Crazy Cats, but 1 in particular!

Prior to becoming a REALTOR, I worked as a veterinary technician for 8 years. In the time that I worked at the animal hospital, I adopted 5 cats. I won't bore you with the details of them all, but one cat in particular.

We had an adoption program for kittens, and had been very successful at finding the perfect home for each little bundle of fur. One day, we received a homeless litter, and within a week they had all been adopted. A week later, the chubby little tiger kitten in the litter was returned...for personal reasons (according to the client). The cute little guy was quickly adopted again..and returned. The new owner claimed to be going through a divorce, and just couldn't handle the kitten right now. Weeks went by and the little tiger kitten sat in the adoption cat. Only he didn't just sit there, he talked and talked and talked and so on.

After about 2 months, I convinced my husband that we needed another cat and that sweet little kitten came to live with us and our sweet little girl, Maddie (a 1 year old cat). After getting to know him, we decided on the name of Pugsly. When he ate, you could hear him mumbling, it sounded as if he was saying "yum, yum, yum". We thought it was cute. When friends would visit, he would chase them around nipping at their heels. We thought it was funny. Then he started getting more and more aggressive with guest and would attack for no reason. Taking him to the vet was a day long procedure. We had to tranquilize him before leaving the house, then the Veterinarian that I worked for would meet us with an anesthesia tank at the door. My husband would scruff him and stuff him in the tank, and we would anesthetise him just so the doctor could look him over and give him vaccines. When he was about 2 years old, he got very sick. After 5 months of vomiting, a weight loss of 7pounds (he's a big boy), X-rays and every blood test known to man, I rushed him in for exploratory surgery...it was our last hope. The vet found string wrapped around his intestines, pieces of twine, trash bag, ribbon and a few unidentifiable objects. He survived the surgery and the infection of his intestines. He was back up to 13 pounds in no time, and meaner than ever.

Recently, I was given a Complaint Free World bracelet. Pugsly ate it and I had the pleasure of scooping it out of the litter box the next day. I was given another bracelet the following week, and he ate that one too. We have been so careful not to leave anything out that he could possibly eat, and I caught him in my closet chewing the buttons and hem off my dresses. We now have the doors bunjeed together to keep him out.

Now, our problem is that everyone that knows Pugsly is afraid of him. We rarely go on vacation, because we worry that he will attack the pet sitter and then what? We tried to put him in a kennel once, and no one in the hospital could or would go near him. He won't eat, he gets so stressed out that he runs a high fever, and he literally makes himself sick.

All of this said, We love him very much. He just turned 11 years old in July, and is very healthy physically. Considering his diet of buttons, fabric and rubber bracelets he does alright. Our Homeowner's insurance company would probably drop us if they knew how mean he was. Maybe we should post a BEWARE OF CAT sign!

That's Pugsly on the left, then Frankie, Andy, Maddie, & Bodean.

Angel Dogs

I came across this during my work as a Veterinary Technician, and absolutely love it. I insert it into sympathy cards when humans that I know lose pets. Hope you all enjoy it, and that anyone who has ever lost a pet finds comfort in Angel Dogs.

ANGEL DOGS

When Dogs go to heaven, they don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best. He gives them fields. Fields and fields. When a dog arrives in heaven, he just runs. Dog heaven has clear, wide lakes filled with geese that honk and flap and tease. The dogs love this. They run beside the water and bark and bark and God watches them from behind a tree and smiles.

There are children, of course, Angel children. God knows that dogs love children more than anything else in the world, so he fills Dog Heaven with plenty of them. There are children on bikes and children on sleds. There are children throwing red rubber balls and children pulling kites through the clouds. The dogs are there, and the children love them dearly.

And oh, the dog biscuits. Biscuits and biscuits as far as the eye can see. God has a sense of humor, so he makes his biscuits in funny shapes for His dogs. There are kitty-cat biscuits and squirrel biscuits, Ice-cream biscuits and ham-sandwich biscuits. Every Angel who passes by has a biscuit for a dog. And, of course, all God's dogs sit when the angels say "sit." Every dog becomes a good dog in Dog Heaven.

God turns clouds inside out to make fluffy beds for the dogs in Dog Heaven, and when they are tired from running and barking and eating ham-sandwich biscuits, the dogs find a cloud bed for sleeping. They turn around and around in the cloud...until it feels just right, and then they curl up and they sleep. God watches over each one of them. And there are no bad dreams.

Dogs in Dog Heaven have almost always belonged to somebody on Earth and, of course, the dogs remember this. Heaven is full of memories. So sometimes and angel will walk a dog back to Earth for little visit and quietly, invisibly, the dog will sniff about his old backyard, will investigate the cat next door, will follow the child to school, will sit on the front porch and wait for the mail. When he is satisfied that all is well, the dog will return to Heaven with the angel. It is where dogs belong, near God who made them. The dogs in Dog Heaven who had no real homes on Earth are given one in heaven. The homes have yards and porches and there are couches to lie on and tables to sit under while angels eat their dinners. There are special bowls with the dogs' names on them. And each dog is petted and reminded how good he is, all day long.

Dogs in Dog Heaven may stay as long as they like and this can mean forever. They will be there when old friends show up! They will be there at the door, Angel Dogs.

Honest and Hard Working REALTOR®

Little Lessons in My Life

My parents divorced when I was nine years old. My mother, the best mother in the whole world, did everything she could to give us what we needed and to teach us how to be honest, hardworking adults. She worked 3 jobs and took classes at night so that she could feed us and reach her dreams at the same time.

If I learned anything from my mother, it was that you have to work hard for the things you want, always be honest, and never give up on yourself.

I am disappointed at the work ethics that young people seem to have these days. No one wants to work anymore! With the real estate market in the state it is in right now, we have to work hard to be successful. We also need to be honest, I truly believe that honesty is ALWAYS best (except when my mother wears that horrible brown suit...I don't want to hurt her feelings). I have lost a couple of listings for being too honest, but hopefully when they expire because they are way overpriced, the sellers will remember that funny, honest young woman and decide to give me a chance.

When I first started in the Real Estate business, I tried to be something that I was not. I bought business suits and carried a briefcase, and tried to sound very professional. It wasn't working for me! After struggling with the idea of getting out of the business, I realized that my problem was that I wasn't being true to myself. If I wanted people to trust and like me, I had to be ME. I am somewhat sarcastic, and brutally honest at times. I am a little on the goofy side, I like to have fun, and I don't look good in a business suit. I started dressing in my style again, and joking and laughing with potential clients, and my business has picked up significantly. I am a lot happier with myself and real estate, and have a whole new respect for the person I have become.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Honesty is the human quality of communicating and acting truthfully related to truth as a value. This includes listening, and any action in the human repertoire - as well as speaking.

Superficially, honesty means simply stating facts and views as best one truly believes them to be. It includes both honesty to others, and to oneself (see: self-deception) and about one's own motives and inner reality. Honesty, at times, has the ability to cause misfortune to the person who displayed it.

Excerpts from a dog's/cat's Diary

I received this in an email this morning and wanted to share it with the rest of you pet lovers! If you live with cats and dogs...you can really appreiciate this.

Excerpts from a dog's diary

8:00am Dog Food! My favorite thing!
9:00am A car ride! My favorite thing!
9:40am A walk in the park! My favorite thing!
10:30am Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing!
12:00pm Lunch!! My Favorite thing
1:00pm Played in the yard! My favorite thing!
3:00pm Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00pm Milk bones! My favorite thing!
7:00pm Got to play ball!! My favorite thing!
8:00pm Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11:00pm Sleeping in my bed!! My favorite thing

Excerpts from a cat's diary

Day 893 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with
bizarre little dangling object. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the
other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I
make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat
something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me
going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their
feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly
demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending
comments about what a "good little hunter" I am.
B@st@rds!! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I
was placed in solitary conferment for the duration of the event. However, I
could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement
was due to the power of "allergies". I must learn what this means, and how
to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my
tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this
again tomorrow - but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other
prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special
privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to
return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I
observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he
reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him
in an elevated cell, so he is safe..for now..

An Animals love can improve your health, your mind and your business.

An animals love can improve your health, your mind and your business.

Did you know that sixty three percent of American households own a pet? The majority of those own more than one. I myself live with 5 cats and 1 dog...but I don't own them, they own me.

Research has shown that living with pets provides health benefits. It is proven that pets help lower blood pressure, lessen anxiety and boost our immunity. Pets also offer unconditional love that's difficult to find anywhere else, and very appreciated after a long day of work.

Walking a dog, being pushed around by a cat, or just caring for a pet in general provides exercise and companionship. Studies have shown that Alzheimer's patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home. Studies also show that heart attack patients who have pets survive longer than those without.

Pet owners themselves rank companionship, love, company and affection as the top benefits of owning a pet. Statistics provided by the National Pet Owners Study show that Seventy four percent of dog owners and sixty percent of cat owners consider their pet as a child or family member. Sixty two percent of pet owners said their pets helped them relax and relieved stress.

Pets are great conversation starters. One of the first questions I ask a potential client is, "Do you have any pets"? It opens up a door to something I feel very strongly about, and if they do have pets, we now have something in common. Consider the number of pet owners that treat their pets as part of the family before you ask that question and keep in mind that a conversation about our four legged friends can last for hours if allowed.

As a REALTOR®, my pets come in very handy for marketing and advertising. The best ads I've ever seen include photos or videos of cats and/or dogs. Animals are funny, cute and well loved ...what better way to promote your business.

When I've been at the office working all day, I look forward to walking in the front door of my home and being greeted by my dog, and my five crazy cats. They love me no matter what, they never argue with me and they provide an assortment of added benefits. When I feel good, I do a better job and I can thank my four legged family for that.

Amy Hahn

REALTOR®/Broker/Pet Lover

( My wonderful dog Layla and her best friend/my son Tanner )

"A boy can learn a lot from a dog: obedience, loyalty and the importance of turning around three times before lying down" -Robert Benchley-

"Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms" -George Eliot

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man" - Mark Twain

Successful Open House?

Does anyone know the secret to holding a successful Open House? I don't hold too many, because I have never had a great turn out, but occasionally I still get a seller that feels very strongly about Open Houses. I used to bake cookies and prepare cheese/fruit trays, set up drinks, etc...only to gain 5 pounds by the end of the day, because the 2 people that stop by don't eat. Those 2 people are usually one nosy neighbor and one Real Estate agent. Don't get me wrong, I get a lot accomplished at an open house: I balance my check book, make a few phone calls, re-read the Secret (a blog in itself) and clean out my laptop bag (which I carry my life in). I've held open houses on weekends and weekdays, morning, noon and night. I advertise in the local paper and MLS system. I put signs directing people to the house (with balloons, of course), And have never had any luck.

Does anyone out there have any tips or suggestions, or am I wasting my time?

Positive Thinking

If you get the newspaper or watch the news, you know what the media is doing to our Real Estate Market. My Broker in Charge recently gave the agents in our office a pep talk, in hopes of lifting our spirits and improving our attitudes toward our careers. One thing that she asked of us was: When people in the community ask us how the market is, to respond with "It's a great market, if you're a buyer". I've been trying it (It's amazing how often I am asked that question) and my attitude has definately improved...along with my job performance. It really is a great market out there, and it will only get better in 2008.
