Gorge Scenery

These are some favorite gorge pictures I've taken over the years. There is always an endless supply of scenic views in the Columbia River Gorge available for those who enjoy photography. Some of the places I like to take pictures from are Ruthton Park, Rowena Crest, Underwood viewpoints, Stevenson, Rooster Rock State Park and the Mosier Twin Tunnel Trail.

If houses could talk

Neglected and dilapidated with peeling paint, broken windows, leaking roofs and plenty of other problems, if houses could talk we might be surprised at their history. Houses can be loved again and gain addtional years of useful life with the right care and handling. Here are some before and after house pictures I took of homes in the Gorge. The first one is the Historic Colby House, a 1905 Victorian located at 1219 Columbia Ave in Hood River. The Second one is located on Montello Ave in Hood River. The third house is located in Stevenson Washington. All of these homes were in dire need of repairs and are now leading useful lives again.

Eastside Hood River

EASTSIDE HOOD RIVER is located east of Hwy 35. Turn east just past Tum a Lum Lumber at the China Gorge Restaurant (watch for the big panda bear) and head up through the sharp curves to Eastside Rd. You can also take Whiskey Creek Rd. about a mile further South and East off of Hwy 35. Steep and winding narrow roads lead to the Eastside area. It is convenient to the Mosier Twin Tunnel Trail for walking or riding bikes. There is a rural country feeling and many of the homes and properties have views of the Columbia River. The Eastside is a rather exclusive area with few homes ever on the market at any given time. With the narrow and steep roads I don't find it as family friendly for young children. It is not too far from downtown Hood River, but not what one would consider walking distance either.

Westside Hood River

WESTSIDE HOOD RIVER

When you're looking for a home or property near Hood River it's good to know the general area. Westside Hood River is located on the west side of town. It is a beautiful area at the furthest I'd say 10 minutes from downtown Hood River. Many people like Westside Hood River because it has a rural country feel, yet is still convenient to town. It is generally level and good bike riding, near the schools, etc. Many homes and properties have mountain views. Some even have double mountain views of both Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Another thing people like about Westside Hood River is the domestic water is supplied from Ice Fountain Water District. This is very good drinking water. Many properties also have irrigation rights from Farmers Irrigation. If you like to garden and landscape it's really nice and affordable to have this irrigation water from May till Oct.

In recent years a number of subdevelopments have been built on Hood River's Westside. If you take May St. by the Hood River Middle School and Aquatic Center and head west you pass many newer homes. One development off May St. is Fox Hollow with larger sized homes. Willow Ponds is another nice development with very custom homes.

Unique wood ceiling

Here's an idea to add a special touch in a room. We used this application on a new construction project in a living room which has 10 ft ceilings. Because the exterior roofline of this room is hipped the inside truss layout was not condusive to installing the wood directly into the bottom of the trusses.

To make things easier we installed 1/2" CDX plywood as a base rather than drywall, directly onto the ceiling trusses. Next we sanded and stained 1/2" x 8' fir lap siding boards. We got this siding from a local lumber company that was remanufacturing lumber into new products. This lap siding comes only in 8 ft lengths and was very light and easy to work with. The cost was .55 per lineal ft. It was easier to install than a true tongue and groove board as it just has one lap to cover.

Because we had the plywood to nail into it didn't matter where our ends on the fir boards met. We used a pneumatic pinner to attach the fir boards to the plywood on the ceiling.

We also installed the fir boards on the bottom of soffits we have on both sides of the room. In the bottom of the soffits we have mini can lighting and on the sides of the soffits we have speaker wires for surround sound eventually. We will be putting up crown moulding where the ceiling meets the wall and where the soffit meets the ceiling as well.

November rain

We have had such a great fall with beautiful colors but now the rain has finally come to the gorge. The trees are starting to lose their colorful leaves. Even though it's been damp and drizzly it can still be pleasant to get outside for a walk around town. Here are some Hood River pics I took on Sunday around town.

Columbia Gorge Sales Overview-October 2008

Columbia Gorge Real Estate

The Columbia River Gorge is a region located in both Oregon and Washington divided by the Columbia River. It starts just past Troutdale which is east of Portland and continues about 85 miles. The scenery through the gorge is spectacular with many micro climates along the way from "rain forest" to "high desert" and in between. If you are interested in moving to the Columbia Gorge area I have lived here since 1985 and know the market well. I specialize in Hood River real estate. I also sell Skamania County real estate, The Dalles real estate and Klickitat County real estate. I am a member of the Mid Columbia Board of Realtors, Oregon Assn of Realtors, and National Assn of Realtors. I especially like to help people find exactly what they're looking for and I work very hard doing that.

Stevenson, Washington

I took this picture the other day near Rock Creek Cove in Stevenson, Wa. I love the mix of sunlight and sky with the reflection of hills on the water. Stevenson is a quaint small town to visit in the Columbia River Gorge. It is home to the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center, The Skamania Lodge, and the nearby Bonneville Dam. I am very familiar with the Stevenson Washington area as I lived in Stevenson for 6 years. If you are interested in buying a home in Stevenson I would be happy to help you find what you're looking for.
Eighteen Mile Island

It is believed that he raised chickens on the island, thus "Chicken Charlie's Island". There is one house located on the island. It has been for sale at different times during the past 15 years. You can best view this island when you are driving west on I84 from Mosier to Hood River.
