A loaded question, don't you think? As a Broker/Owner of a real estate firm in Southwest Virginia, my journey has been quite interesting. I have met many, many people along the way. As a 32-year old wife & mother of 3, my career has developed into a 'lifestyle change'. Yes, you read that correctly! Fairly often people ask me, 'how in the world do you juggle your business with your family?' Well, here it is: it's simple, real estate is a lifestyle change. It is not a 9am-5pm job by no means! If you think it is, you could not be more wrong. This job is very tough! It is quite rewarding in many ways IF (and only IF) you are willing to put in the hours and work for it! As with any profession, your success is based on what YOU are willing & able to contribute to it. I was not selling real estate during the "Boom" years around 2003, so I can honestly say that I have worked for the business that I have gained over the last several years.  And I am happy about that. It gives me a different sense of accomplishment! As a leader in many areas of this industry and in the community, nothing gets under my skin more than someone that feels that life should just be easier for them. Seriously....do you think the rest of us just sit back and wait for business just to fall in our lap? GROW UP! Think about it for a few minutes, the Agents/Brokers that are producing in a tough market are those that set goals for themselves. We get up in the morning and begin our day by asking ourselves questions such as:

What house am I going to sell today?

How can I better my advertising today?

Who's business can I target today?

Which one of my strategic business partners should I reach out to today?

We are ALWAYS thinking of new ways to improve, as well as asking for constructive criticism from colleagues. If you take the time to ask those around you what you can do to improve, you may be surprised at how much that will help you grow your business. The world is a cynical place. Let's not allow your real estate business to be that way also! Our industry needs more of those who can work together and accomplish more together! There is more than enough business to go around, so please....use your head, be creative, be positive, grow your business and try to decrease your cynicism! Only YOU have the power to be all that you can be....at the end of the day, you will be much happier with your business endeavors.

As the Springtime is just around the corner, prepare your home by checking the smoke detectors.  Having low (or no) batteries in your smoke detectors is just as bad as not having them at all.  What good are they if they are not reliable?

Washington, December 01, 2010

The following is a statement by National Association of Realtors® President Ron Phipps.

“As the leading advocate for housing and home ownership issues, NAR firmly believes that the mortgage interest deduction (MID) is vital to the stability of the American housing market and economy.

“The MID must not be targeted for change. NAR is actively engaged on behalf of the nation’s 75 million home owners and 1.1 million Realtors® to ensure that the current deduction is not modified as was recommended in the Deficit Reduction Commission report released today.

“The tax deductibility of interest paid on mortgages is a powerful incentive for home ownership and has been one of the simplest provisions in the federal tax code for more than 80 years. In a new survey commissioned by NAR and conducted online in October 2010 by Harris Interactive of nearly 3,000 homeowners and renters, nearly three-fourths of homeowners and two-thirds of renters said the mortgage interest deduction was extremely or very important to them.

“Recent progress has been made in bringing stability to the housing market and any changes to the MID now or in the future could critically erode home prices and the value of homes by as much as 15 percent, according to our research. This would negatively impact home ownership for millions of Americans, including those who own their homes outright and have no mortgage.

“Any further downward pressure on home prices will hamper the economic recovery, raise foreclosures and hurt banks’ abilities to lend and likely tip the economy into another recession resulting in further job losses for the country. It will effectively close the door on the American dream.

“NAR will remain vigilant in opposing any plan that modifies or excludes the deductibility of mortgage interest.”

The National Association of Realtors®, “The Voice for Real Estate,” is America’s largest trade association, representing 1.1 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries.

Information about NAR is available at www.realtor.org. This and other news releases are posted in the News Media section.
