Networking Basics Series: Nobody Wants to Do Business With a Deadbeat Part 2 - 09/30/09 07:36 PM
Networking Basics Series: Nobody Wants to Do Business With a Deadbeat Part 2 Boy, if I had a dollar for every time I've heard someone in any area of the real estate industry whine, "Networking just doesn't work." Here's the question I always ask in response: "Really? Welll, what are YOU bringing to the game?" I belong to a Friday morning leads group through our Chamber of Commerce. Leads group - so it's one person per industry. Shouldn't be too tough, then, to get a lead or two every now and again, right? Except for one guy. We'll just call him

Networking Basics Series: How Memorable Is Your 30-Second Commercial Part 1 - 09/29/09 07:40 PM
Networking Basics Series: How Memorable Is Your 30-Second Commercial Part 1 I don't know what things are like in your area of the country, but in Phoenix, there are so many networking opportunities, you could literally attend 4 meetings a day and not hit all of them. You know the kind ... chicken caesar salad for lunch, and eveyone gets a chance to give their 10- to 30-second elevator speech. So be honest. How bored are you by the time it comes around to your turn? More to the point, how many people do you actually remember? How many names have

Scottsdale's 'Lost Our Home Pet Foundation' Rescues Pets Abandoned by Families in Foreclosure One segment of our community affected by the foreclosure crisis, and often completely overlooked, are the animals. When families are doing all the can to scramble, pack, and move, they are sometimes unable to take their dogs or cats with them, and some, feeling they have no other option, leave these pets behind. Right here in our own Greater Phoenix area, somebody's doing something about it! Jodi Polanski, a mortgage lender, founded Lost Our Home Pet Foundation, a nonprofit group of real estate professionals who rescue pets left

Want to Start Achieving Your Goals? Get an Accountability Partner! - 09/29/09 08:59 AM
Want to Start Achieving Your Goals? Get an Accountability Partner! According to John G. Miller, author of QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, "The lack of personal accountability has resulted in an epidemic of blame, complaining, and procrastination. No organization - or individual - can achieve goals, [or] compete in the marketplace ... without personal accountability." A great way to create accountability is by finding an accountability partner, a fellow business professional whom you trust to act as a goal-setting mentor. The purpose is to provide feedback, new perspectives, and especially that nudge we need to JUST DO IT. Accountability partnerships

Friday Funnies: Officer, There's a Runway in My Street! - 09/25/09 04:49 PM
Friday Funnies: Officer, There's a Runway in My Street! The Phoenix Metro Light Rail is less than a year old, but we've already had our share of train/auto and train/pedestrian accidents. Most drivers involved in accidents or near-misses claim they're just not used to paying attention to the fact that a TRAIN may now be in their path. That might hold up as an excuse for 3 more months, until the first anniversary of the Light Rail, but ... ... what would happen if Phoenix drivers had to pause, not for trains, but had to watch out for PLANES crossing their

Friday Funnies: Why Arizona Doesn't Embrace Daylight Saving Time! So we take a lot of heat here in Arizona for being one of a few holdouts when it comes to Daylight Saving Time ... but seriously, have you ever considered just how stupid an idea it really is? Case in point: When told the reason for Daylight Saving Time, the Old Indian said, "Only the government would believe that you can cut a foot off the top

3rd Quarter Goal Results - What's Working? What's Not Working? - 09/05/09 07:52 PM
3rd Quarter Goal Results - What's Working? What's Not Working? The end of the year is in sigjt. To some that may be exciting, to others it might be frustrating. In our sales meeting this week I handed out a questionnaire that basically looked at what's working, what's not working. It's been a roller coaster year for many agents. You've probably worked harder than ever before, made less money and had a boat load of challenging situations to handle. Correct? We certainly have experienced all of this in our office. At the beginning of 2009 Active Rain and social media was

Monsoon Lightning Storm - Labor Day Weekend in Phoenix, Arizona - 09/05/09 06:50 PM
Monsoon Lightning Storm - Labor Day Weekend in Phoenix, Arizona It has been an exciting stormy day for us in Phoenix! About 9 o'clock this morning, we were just about to go for a nice long hike in the preserve by our house. Boom! Boom! Boom! We looked at each other and said, "What the heck is that?" Within moments we were in a torrential downpour! I immediately grabbed my camera, because I knew I had to take some photos to share with you. (This must be another sign of an active rain addict!) I couldn't go outside due to the lightning being

Cave Creek, AZ Getting New Fire and Police Stations - 09/04/09 08:13 AM
Cave Creek, AZ Getting New Fire and Police Stations Come April, the Dove Valley area of Cave Creek may be safer as police and firefighters hope to cut response times with the opening of a new fire station and police precinct headquarters. Although they are perks many high-end homeowners seek, the large gated communities and expansive properties, coupled with the distance of existing area fire and police stations, can make emergency response times longer than average. Another benefit to area homeowners is that the two new buildings will feature community rooms available for block watches, homeowners associations, and other groups to

Light Rail Stations up for Adoption in Phoenix - Get Visibility for Your Business! - 09/03/09 08:01 PM
Light Rail Stations up for Adoption in Phoenix - Get Visibility for Your Business! With 60 percent more riders than expected, the Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa Light Rail is going gangbusters, seeing an average of 40,000 users daily. Just 8 months old, the light rail recently unveiled its "adopt a station" program, in an effort to encourage businesses, charities, civic groups, or churches along the 20-mile track to take ownership of their nearest station. The idea originally came from the community, but was backed by Metro Chairman Tom Simplot. The best way to describe it is as a cross between the adopt-a-highway and neighborhood-watch programs. Sponsors in

ASU Wants to Build Satellite Campus in Goodyear, AZ - 09/03/09 06:31 PM
ASU Wants to Build Satellite Campus in Goodyear, AZ Arizona State University is in talks with the city of Goodyear to build a new campus there. Lake Havasu City and Show Low are other cities that have piped up to express interest in these smaller campuses. The one sticking point is that ASU wants Goodyear to pay for the school. Under the Colleges @ ASU plan, students would be able to earn four-year degrees in three years,

Fun Things to do over Labor Day Weekend in Phoenix, Arizona - 09/03/09 09:57 AM
Fun Things to do over Labor Day Weekend in Phoenix, Arizona In the U.S. Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September. The day was set aside in dedication to the social and economic achievements of American workers, representing a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. It's also the last big hoorah of the summer. Come September 8, it's back to school, back to work, and back to business as we wait out the rest of the heat for the temperature break that usually comes around by the

Heart Attack Grill - Phoenix Arizona - 09/01/09 06:33 PM
Heart Attack Grill - Phoenix Arizona You might think this is a joke but it's not. Seriously the Heart Attack Grill advertises all kinds of wacky stuff that is sooooo not heart healthy. And they are busy like you wouldn't believe. No kidding. They're known for its massive Quadruple Bypass burger & Flatliner Fries that has over 8000 calories! Ok before you make any assumptions about the owner of this establishment let me warn you - he is a marketing genius. Jon Basso initially decided using only the power of Internet to advertise about its food chain. Heart Attack
