Around the 'PUDDLE' ~ Week in Review #7 ~ 12/19/06 - 12/25/06 - 12/26/06 11:49 AM

First, let me start by wishing everyone here on Active Rain a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!  I hope all have had, and are having, a joyous holiday!
Following the previous AR posters whose turn it was to do the "Week in Review" was no easy chore, I can assure you.  Talk about reading - reading, reading, and MORE reading to make sure I didn't miss a post.  What a GREAT group of blogs there are here in the Active Rain Puddle - I discovered so many out there that I might not have found otherwise.  For that opportunity, I am thrilled to have … (72 comments)

Christmas Merriment and Memories......... - 12/24/06 09:16 AM
My sisters and I grew up in the Air Force, and as such, we lived in scattered places all over the country.  My earliest memories of tracking Santa are from when we lived in Idaho, on Mountain Home Air Force Base.
We used to be able to turn on the TV and track Santa's progress, and we could see how close he might be getting to our house.  And, of course, what that meant was, we needed to get to bed AND be asleep BEFORE he got to our house or he wouldn't stop.   My sisters and I really thought this … (28 comments)

Welcome to the 'Hood - Portsmouth's New Library!! - 12/18/06 05:32 PM
We've got a brand NEW Library here in Portsmouth, and it just opened this morning!!  It is just a beautiful building, both inside and out.  The landscaping still has to be done, and that will be taken care of in the spring.  Even without that, it's gorgeous!
I took this picture this weekend of the sign made by the Portsmouth Middle School, which is right next door to our new library.  I thought it was really cute to see this, and a great indication that everyone has been so looking forward to opening day!
I just got back from a very nice guided tour … (9 comments)

Sweet Treats - Special Clients - 12/17/06 08:20 PM
I had a really special day today with some first-time buyer clients of mine that I've been working with for about 3 weeks.  They're a young couple, soon to be married, and they're alot of fun to work with.  She owns her own catering business, and also works as a chef in a restaurant in the area.  He's an accountant and does a bit of traveling for a large firm.  They both have really neat personalities and a great sense of humor.
I met them because they contacted me regarding one of my listings here in Portsmouth that they had found online.  … (7 comments)

MEMED??? I've been "Memed"!! - 12/16/06 09:46 PM
MEMED??  What the heck is that???
I read about this "meme" thing on Mary McKnight's blog, and just thought it was something that was going on in the outer world of blogging.  But I see it's now made it's way here into the rain puddles of Active Rain.
I've been tagged by none other than Mr. Moo-Man, Angus Woodbury.  Thank you Moo!!   ;-)
I was told I need to write about 5 things most people don't know about me.  What 5 things?  Are there 5 things about me that I can actually tell people?  Hmmmm, well here goes:
1)  I was the 6th generation of my … (20 comments)

America's SMARTEST Cities - Is Your City Listed? - 12/16/06 09:27 AM
Forbes Magazine just released their list of the smartest cities in America, and this time around, Boulder Colorado took the top honors.  Boulder stood out not necessarily because the University of Colorado is there, but because Boulder makes great effort in making their city "sticky", keeping college graduates in the area, living and working after they graduate.  Two of the things cited for making Boulder an exciting place to live were the outdoor lifestyle and the employment opportunities.  Way to go Boulder!!
Forbes used the information gleemed from Sperling's Best Places to live, and took from that the 200 biggest metropolitan areas … (25 comments)

Christmas Decorations Abound!! - 12/15/06 02:50 PM

It sure is looking festive around my area this year!  I noticed on Thanksgiving night this year, many homes were already starting to show off their Christmas and holiday decorations.  I don't really remember them showing up that early in the past.
This is a home in my area that really goes all out!  You may remember I did a Halloween post about more houses getting all decked out for Halloween this year than I'd ever seen before.
This is the same house in those pictures - this time decked out for Christmas and Santa Claus!!

I'm certainly seeing more and more of … (12 comments)

Magical Mistletoe - 12/13/06 01:34 PM

Have you ever wondered about mistletoe - where it comes from, how it came to have the romantic magic it does?  I saw a bunch of it for sale somewhere recently around Portsmouth, and I got to wondering how a plant like that evolved into something with the magical powers that mistletoe symbolizes.
Did you know that mistletoe is really a parasite?  It is!  It's a parasitic shrub that's usually found in fruit trees, maples and sometimes in oaks.  And in North America, it's typically found in trees from New Jersey down to Florida.
Mistletoe has been associated with the holidays at this time of year … (16 comments)

Wreaths Across America - 12/12/06 10:35 AM

Fifteen years ago, a couple by the name of Merrill and Karen Worcester, owners of the Worcester Wreath Company, began donating wreaths for the Arlington Cemetery.
Back then, they were the leftover wreaths that they had that were still fresh.  He didn't want them to go to waste, so he began sending them to Arlington.  This came about because when he was younger, he won a trip to Washington DC, and he always remembered the Arlington Cemetery from that trip.
He has continued sending these wreaths each year, as his way of giving back to veterans because "without them, we would not have what we … (11 comments)

The New Year and Beyond - Goals - 12/11/06 03:35 PM
I've been reading a number of articles and websites lately about goal setting, how to go about it and what goals should entail.  I must profess, I have never been one to do written goals.  I just, apparently, go along and do my job and live my life, and things usually work out - each year is usually better than the one before.
For 2007, I'm going to TRY to be better at setting goals, and having them mean something other than just words on a piece of paper that I misplace or throw away.  I'm going to try to make S-M-A-R-T … (15 comments)

Best NH Businesses to Work For - 12/07/06 03:40 PM
Business NH Magazine recently released their "Best Companies to Work For" list in New Hampshire.  Each year they put out a list of those employers who are considered the best to work for in NH, based on how employees are treated, recognized and valued for their contributions.
Two Seacoast area companies made the top 10 - Seacoast Harley-Davidson in North Hampton and Appledore Engineering, Inc. in Portsmouth.
Seacoast Harley-Davidson has been named to this presigious list six times.  Because of the number of times they've been recognized on this list, they were inducted into the "Best Businesses to Work for Hall of Fame".  … (7 comments)

Holiday Happenings on the Seacoast! - 12/07/06 02:30 PM

We don't have any snow here in the coastal areas of New Hampshire, but we are most assuredly in the holiday spirit!!  We've got lots of things to do here, for both residents and visitors alike.
The 9th Annual Holiday Home Tour is this Sunday, December 10th, from 4-8pm.  This is a wonderful opportunity to tour some beautiful homes around Portsmouth that are all decked out for the holidays.  Tickets are $15 and are available at a variety of businesses around town.  I've taken part in this in the past, and you sure do get to see some really gorgeous homes and decorations!
Seacoast … (7 comments)

A Little Effort, Some Simple Words, A Small Reward! - 12/05/06 07:59 PM
I had a voice mail message yesterday from an agent I didn't know from outside my area.  She wanted to show one of my listings in Newmarket NH, which I was thrilled to hear!  Well, in the middle of the night, I woke up and realized I'd never called her back.  Oh how I hate waking up and realizing I forgot to do something like that.
This morning, as soon as I was up and about, I tried to call her office number that she left me, but her name wasn't listed in the office directory.  I tried going by her … (39 comments)

So Far to Go, So Much to Learn........ (Realty Blogging Review #3) - 12/05/06 06:42 AM

This has been one of the BEST books for my business that I have picked up in a good long time!  I joined Active Rain a few months ago, having no real idea what the heck this thing called "blogging" was, and boy, have I learned ALOT since then!!
I have only finished Chapter 2 in this book, but that chapter alone is a whole book unto itself.  I canNOT wait to see what the rest of the book is going to teach me!
Chapter 2 of "Realty Blogging" breaks down all those words and phrases I've heard into plain understandable English - … (28 comments)
