Marietta , Georgia recently welcomed twenty-two representatives from the city government of Beijing, China. This warm foreign policy initiative was intended to provide our Chinese brethren with insight into how the city functions and how we govern ourselves in a representative democracy. Marietta's staff discussed the city's departments, the services each provides, how services are funded and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials. The delegation visited and learned about Marietta's various departments, museums and theatres. The representatives were selected for the program by the Beijing government during a competitive process. Most of them were fairly young and viewed as showing (1 comments)

Nothing pleases more than a blast from the past. Chubby Checker, one of the most notable performers of the 1960s, will twist his way into Cobb County Saturday, March 5. The performance will be at Jennie T. Anderson Theatre and tickets are still available. Checker has sustained a career over four decades and released more than 20 hit songs that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. "The Twist" recently topped the list of most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since 1958. If you plan to be near Marietta Square in the coming days, stop by and visit Santa Claus. Santa will be in his Workshop and will be open to visitors December 18, 19, 22-24. Nestled in a red workshop (built by city staff), in Glover Park, Santa listens to each child's long list and poses for photos. Parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras, or purchase a photo from the photographer on hand. Also, plan to visit the shops on the Square for unique gifts and holiday treats! Tomorrow is Veterans Day, and there will be events throughout Cobb County, Georgia to honor those who served our country over its remarkable history. The city of Marietta and the Marietta Kiwanis Club invite the public to honor the community's veterans with a parade and ceremony on the Square Thursday. The sixth annual Veterans Day parade will start at 11 a.m. Thursday at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, and proceed to the Square. Halloween festivities will continue this coming week in Marietta, Georgia - and one of these will support a good cause. On October 29th at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square, the party is a masquerade but the cause is not. Rock-N-Horror, a music show and costume party featuring local band PRIME, will benefit the Humane Society of Cobb County. Marietta, Georgia will begin a new tradition to raise awareness of our nation's history and government. Americans for Prosperity Foundation and a coalition of organizations will work to host the first ever Constitution Day Festival of Georgia on Friday, September 17th from 5-10PM at Glover Park on the Historic Marietta Square. The family festival will feature live music from Banks and Shane, dramatic performances from local student civics projects, Founding Father reenactments, Constitutional speakers and more. Once again The Earl Strand Theatre on Marietta Square will a classical production to the stage. The Marietta Merchants and Cobb Christmas are partnering again to make Christmas in July on the Marietta Square a huge success. Events include a 5k Flamingo run, V.I.P. breakfast with Santa, photos with Santa in Glover Park, activities for kids and a silent auction for all to enjoy. On Friday July 23rd and Saturday July 24th, the Marietta History Museum will host "Aviation Wing Sneak A Peek" at the Aviation Wing site located at the corner of Atanta Rd and S. Cobb Parkway. Doors will be from11am to 4 pm. Changes to the Aviation Wing site have been in progress and now is the time to show it off. In celebration of this, the day is FREE at the site! Another treasure that Mariettans savor are the wonderful productions presented at Theatre in the Square. Conveniently located off Marietta Square, Theatre in the Square has announced its 2010-11 upcoming season. This will be the 29th season that Theatre in the Square has offered high quality live theater. Live theater is a great treat, and just what locals and tourists need for those special evenings on the Square. From the beginning it received a warm reception and has been successful ever since. The theater produced its first plays in the space formerly occupied by the Depot Restaurant and is now Cool Bean Coffee House. (1 comments)

After a long restoration period, a historic landmark in Marietta, Georgia has never failed to impress its visitors, no matter what the occasion. Since opening in January 2009, the Earl Smith Strand Theatre has been home to a musical theater company, wedding receptions, fundraisers and rooftop cocktail hours, but it has never presented an official concert series - until now. The next First Friday Art Walk will be held on Friday May 7th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Come enjoy one of the most popular events on the Square. The First Friday Art Walks takes place in historic Marietta Square on the first Friday of each month from April to October. The Art Walk is a free, self guided tour showcasing local original art. Local artists are hosted by Marietta Square area restaurants, galleries, museums, venues and boutiques from 6pm to 9pm, rain or shine, and participating venues display an official Art Walk banner in their window.
