There is Something Ironic about the First Flowers to Bloom in My Garden! - 03/27/11 05:23 PM
There is Something Ironic about the First Flowers to Bloom in My Garden! After struggling through a winter with record snowfalls, I have been longing for the first signs of life in my gardens! I have a few plants pushing up through the ground . . . But the first flowers to actually bloom are [drum roll] SNOW DROPS. Sigh . . . I am just glad that something finally did!

This Bird was Just Asking For it!! - 03/26/11 08:09 PM
This Bird was Just Asking For it!! You know how sometimes someone is just asking for it? Well today I was sitting in my car waiting for a client when the first mockingbird I have seen this year landed right in front of me and just asked to be photographed. But wait, I don't have my camera with me today!! Sorry mockingbird! He patiently reminded me that my blackberry would do the trick, so I felt obliged . . . So, as Pat Haddad will tell you, sometimes the phone is the only way to get that photo!

No Flowers in My Yard Yet, But the Indoor Garden Continues to Cheer Me! - 03/25/11 09:09 PM
No Flowers in My Yard Yet, But the Indoor Garden Continues to Cheer Me! People keep asking if I have any flowers in my yard yet. Thank goodness with yesterday's snow, the answer is "No," but things are starting to poke out of the ground, so hopefully within a week I will have an outdoor plant to photograph! During the past week my oldest child's best friend was visiting from England with her incredible camera, and when I asked if she would photograph my indoor garden for me, she handed me the camera and said--"Here, you know how to photograph! If

Here we Snow Again! - 03/23/11 08:38 PM
Here We Snow Again! Okay, so maybe that is not my old Mini Cooper on the winding snowy roads of Connecticut. This is actually a billboard on the side of a building in New York City! Our family friend HeyMagpie had to take this picture as her family also had a Mini that is now being missed. But the snow started falling again today; hopefully it will just go away without any fuss . . .

The First Sign of Spring in Cheshire, CT - NOT a Robin! - 03/18/11 03:18 PM
The First Sign of Spring in Cheshire, CT - NOT a Robin! To me the true first sign of Spring is the return of the Wood Ducks, and that occurred this morning in my backyard. My home office overlooks some very tall trees, so I see some birds that others might miss. I was doubly lucky this morning that my oldest child and friend were getting ready to head out to New York City and had a fabulous camera handy to get some great shots. So once again, these photos are courtesy of HeyMagpie (I told her the photos would be

How Does Your Indoor Garden Grow? - 03/13/11 08:26 PM
How Does Your Indoor Garden Grow? Spring is coming soon, but my indoor garden is what is keeping me going right about now. As some of you know, my Clivia decided to bloom this week. Today I discovered that a FOURTH of the five plants in the pot (that was one plant originally) are now either blossoming or about to do so! See what I found this morning? Number 4 . . . I though you might also enjoy the other "garden" in my house--two inside window boxes. My African Violets absolutely love being in a warm room (with

What a Difference A Day Makes! - 03/12/11 07:41 PM
What a Difference a Day Makes! I rolled out of bed at 6 A.M. today as our kitchen was getting a makeover, and the counter folks were coming at 6:50 (on a Saturday?). When I got downstairs, I smelled the coffee and saw flashes coming from the kitchen--my wife was already there taking goodbye pictures of the Corian counters . . . Both of us were wondering if this was really what we wanted to do . . . but by 7 A.M., it was a little late to turn back! And by 10 A.M. the new

Friday Fotos - A Slice of Heaven - 03/11/11 09:34 PM
Friday Fotos - A Slice of Heaven Do you have a favorite place on earth? I have to say that I love warm climates (like Hawaii and Florida) and dry hot climates (I honestly love to visit Death Valley), but surprisingly one of my favorite spots on earth . . . is Flam Norway It was not the least bit hot, but at least the sun was out all three of the days we relaxed there . . . Had to help keep the sheep fed so there would be plenty of

If April Showers Bring May Flowers, What do March Monsoons Bring? - 03/10/11 09:50 PM
If April Showers Bring May Flowers, What do March Monsoons Bring? Without a doubt, 2011 will go down in history as a year of weather! Here we are only 69 days into the year, and it has already been one of records in Connecticut--record wind, record snow, record rain. If March "Came in Like a Lion," can you imagine how nasty that Lion smelled with this much rain on him? I am so tired of thinking about the weather--can it just be there without bothering us?! Let us hope (and hope and hope) that we will get a beautiful spring and

My Garden is Blooming (Well, my Inside Garden, Anyway) - 03/08/11 04:27 PM
My Garden is Blooming (Well, my Inside Garden, Anyway) My outside garden still has a ways to go before anything will start blooming there, but yesterday morning I happened to notice that my clivia had the beginnings of a bloom! On closer inspection I discovered that there are actually three blooms about to happen (five plants in this large pot), so I should have some interesting photos to share over the next week or two. Hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

I'm MELTING . . . melting . . . - 03/06/11 04:10 PM
I'm MELTING . . . melting . . . No, I am not talking about the Wicked Witch of the West but the Nasty Snow of the Northeast! Finally we are beginning to see the ground . . . I had seriously wondered if my shrubs at the end of my driveway were even still there! I hadn't seen them since them since Christmas Day! Before I raked the roof onto the sidewalk again . . . Pretty soon visitors to our house will not have to come in through the garage, but will once again be

I have Never Met a Viking Ship I didn't Like! - 03/05/11 02:10 PM
I have Never Met a Viking Ship I didn't Like! Okay, so maybe I only met one. This one was the Royal Warship Vasa. How could I possibly like a warship that's purpose was to kill? Well, the Vasa capsized on her maiden voyage in August 1628 and never once fired her guns on the enemy. It went straight to the bottom of Stockholm Harbor having traveled less than one nautical mile. In 1961 the Vasa was raised from the harbor floor and given her very own museum (Vasa Museum). The following pictures were taken at the museum. Please keep in mind

Friday Fotos - A Work of Art done in Spray Paints - 03/04/11 08:22 PM
Friday Fotos - A Work of Art done in Spray Paints While looking through my Scandinavia photos last weekend, I came across the works of art done by a spray paint artist on the streets of Gamla stan (the Old Town Stockholm, Sweden). If you have never seen a spray paint artist at work, watch the transformation below done with bottle tops, pieces of paper, and sharp sticks! If you ever get the chance to see a spray paint artist in your journeys, stop and watch for a few hours! It is absolutely fascinating!

Buying a Home? Don't buy Anything Else Until After you Close! - 03/03/11 01:13 PM
Buying a Home? Don't Buy Anything Else Until After you Close! I have posted about this in the past, but as we head full speed into the Spring real estate buying market, I wanted to be sure to remind buyers that if you are buying a home, you should not buy anything else until after you close. With many buyers being close to the maximum debt-to-income ratio with their financing, it has become critically important that once a buyer has begun the process of securing a mortgage they must exercise absolute restraint when it comes to making purchases of any kind

Is Big Brother Watching You? - 03/01/11 08:49 PM
Is Big Brother Watching You? Well, I am pretty sure my big brother is not watching my blog; even my kids only check it out once in a while (and then get annoyed because we painted the hearth while they were away at college and they didn't get a say in the matter). But you can be pretty sure your office manager or the president of your real estate firm is checking it out once in a while! However, with Google Alerts, you can be sure that others are keeping an eye on what you are saying! When I got the
