I attended today's auction of 19 Brazos Condos in Austin TX.  Real estate auction company Kennedy Wilson today auctioned 19 units in under 2 hours.  Although all of the units had very low starting bids, the auctioneer explained at the begining of the auction that the units had unpublished reserves and that to win the bid, the highest bid had to meet or exceed the unpublished reserves.

Do you consider reserve auctions to be "fake" auctions?  I read a blog today and the author commented that he though reserve auctions were fake auctions to him; not really an auction if there's a reserve.
A common dictionary defintion for "Auction" is the sale of property to the highest bidder. A common industry defintion for a real estate auction is the firm sale of real property by competitive bidding.  In my experience, 80% of reserve auctions sell to the highest bidder, even if under the reserve because the seller was willing to take the high bid.

The mortgage debt relief act was recently signed into law by President Bush.  Basically, this act relieves the debt forgiven by a bank in a home short sale between 2007-2009, from being taxed as income. Here's a link to more information on the Act.
If your or your clients property is in danger of being foreclosed, consider a real estate auction for its time effectiveness of being able to find ready/willing buyers that will compete on the price alone - bringing a maximum cash value price on auction day.

Just read this article about changes being made in legislation regarding public bidding at residential real estate auctions in China.  Apparently land for residential development is so hot - that public auctions where there is a frenzy of bidding activity live has spurred prices to go crazy high.  New legislation will instead require that bidders show up to the auction, register and then write their price on paper, seal their bid, and submit it there and then. This lovely little church was owned by a small congregation that had been in the location for 10 years and then outgrew it.  They found a new church home, moved and then offered their old church home on the conventional market for 12 months with no offers.  So they rented it to a group for a year and found that didn’t work out well.

Here's an idea: 
What if real estate for sale had no price tags? Meaning, no list prices? What if the real estate industry did a complete overhaul and decided that properties on the market would be put out there without any list price?  Do we all agree that the buyers are the ones that determine the market price anyways? They are the ones that will determine the value of the property for their particular use and make an offer accordingly?
