kentucky home inspections: How To Repair Leaky Duct Work! - 01/07/12 12:56 PM
How To Repair Leaky Duct Work!
NOT like this!
Kroger grocery store plastic bags & cloth duct tape are not generally consider an acceptable means of repairing duct work!  Well, except by whoever repaired this leaky duct.

Of course, you couldn't prove that by looking at the duct work in the house I was doing a Lexington KY Home Inspection in this afternoon.

kentucky home inspections: The foibles of stinky plumbing traps and vents! - 06/06/10 06:43 AM
Does your sink or shower smell?  Do they talk back to you (gurgle) when draining.  I'd bet you have a venting or trap problem that you're not aware of yet.  Plumbing Drain, Waste and Vent systems carry away waste while keeping the sewer gas smell from coming back up into your house.
You can read more about the right way on InspectaPedia as I just want to show you some of the
"DO NOT DO THIS" pictures of stuff I've found.

kentucky home inspections: Oh dear, Self. I think I'm going to have an accident! - 04/23/10 04:57 AM
Quite a few (or should I say a LOT) of the things this Lexington Kentucky Home Inspector (and many other inspectors) warn you about Kentucky Home Safety are just like that seat belt in your car.
You really hope you never ever never NEED it.
BUT, if you're driving down the road and suddenly say to yourself, "Oh dear, Self.  I think I'm going to have an accident!" (though most of us use a shorter two word phrase that starts with "OH") it's way to late to reach for your seat belt.
Enough of us need that seat belt every year … (7 comments)

kentucky home inspections: The Shrinkage of Technology! - 04/10/10 06:42 AM
Perusing the photos from yesterday afternoon's Georgetown, Kentucky Home Inspection brought to mind how technology has shrunk so much in the last 30 years or so.

It used to be that if you wanted to watch satellite TV you had to have one of these monstrosities hanging around your yard.

Look closely in the background at the left of the big dish.
Now all you have to have is that little grey dish mounted on your house somewhere.

And a quick Google search for miniature satellite dishes tells me that now you can put … (5 comments)

Inspectors should police themselves, shouldn't they!
You'd think so, but no mechanism exists for that policing other than the free market and some weak licensing laws.  Here's a take on it from one of my fellow home inspectors:  Posted with permission but I've decided to withhold his name.  I will send him a link to this sad commentary on our profession.  If he desires to identify himself, he can do so in the comments section.

I have a story to tell that may be a little long winded but bear with me; it … (22 comments)
