unemployment rates: Why the Northern Virginia Real Estate Market is Different from the "National" Real Estate Market - 08/26/10 04:37 PM
The last few days, everywhere you look -- television, internet, newspapers -- there's a lot of doom and gloom about the real estate market.
Understandably when numbers come out stating that nationwide resale home sales are down 27%+ and new home sales are at the lowest point since the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, there's some fear out there.
**However, every market is local.**                                                                                               (can't emphasize that enough!)
CNN, ABC, CBS, and the rest of the alphabet soup of national broadcast and cable stations do not report on the local market.  They report on the "national" market.  Truth is there is … (9 comments)

unemployment rates: Jobs = People = Houses -- Sounds Like a Winning Formula for D.C. Region - 06/05/10 09:51 AM
While national employment numbers that were released yesterday were disappointing and battered the stock market, things are different here in the D.C. area.  According to data released this past week, unemployment in the Washington area dropped substantially in April to an unemployment rate of 5.9% compared with 6.6% in March.

According to Stephen Fuller, director of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University, "the losses are shrinking, and we're getting more gains."  The Washington Post reported that while the federal government and Washington area health and education sectors continued hiring throughout the recession, in April 2010, retail and … (5 comments)

unemployment rates: Less than Half: Unemployment in Northern Virginia - 02/22/10 04:56 PM
Want some great news?  Who doesn't?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released an unemployment report today that examined the rates of unemployment in the Northern Virginia counties and cities.
Unless you've been living under a rock, haven't turned on the t.v., read a newspaper, been on the internet, or walked down the street in the last 6 months, you're aware that the unemployment rate in the United States has skyrocketed to the 10% region.
Well, in Northern Virginia, most areas are doing quite well when it comes to employment statistics, and some counties, like Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun are doing … (7 comments)

unemployment rates: "J" is for Jobs; That's Good Enough for Me! - 09/16/08 10:25 AM
Let's think for a moment about economic factors that can affect the real estate market:
Supply, demand, interest rate, affordability, credit, incentives, prices...
Then let's think about the one thing that affects a region's economy and in turn the housing market more than just about anything:
JOBS
"J" is for Jobs; That's Good Enough for Me!
(inspired by C is for Cookie)
And it should be good enough for you too.  Jobs, job growth, and unemployment rates are the leading indicators of the strength of a region's economy and without a question, the strength of the job market determines the strength … (1 comments)

unemployment rates: Not Just "Office Space" -- D.C. Area has the Good Jobs - 10/04/07 10:11 PM
What determines the price of a home and the value of an investing in a particular area?
Location, Location, Location!  You've no doubt heard that before.
Supply & Demand?  Of course...

But there is another key factor -- Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!
When the job market is hot, so is the particular region of the country.  When Wall Street is hot, everyone wants to live and work in New York City.  During the high-tech internet boom, high-paying jobs fueled the growth of the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley.  The rise in home prices in these areas reflected the high demand from J.P. Morgan … (6 comments)

unemployment rates: Northern Virginia Highlights of the Trends in Housing Report - 07/31/07 04:51 PM
What’s happening in the housing market and where is it heading?  None of us possess a crystal ball, but one comprehensive report that pulls a lot of weight in predicting trends is the MRIS Trends in Housing Report.
MRIS is an abbreviation for Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. and is the name of the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) which covers the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area including D.C., suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
Here are the major highlights pertaining to the Northern Virginia area from the report.  If you’d be interested in receiving a copy of the full report, feel free to … (1 comments)
