Some say the only type of ridge vent that should be used is a baffled ridge vent. The baffle deflects wind blowing up on the roof. This both increases the airflow from the attic and prevents the penetration of rain and snow. There has been growing evidence that a shingle's tear strength is a good indicator of it's resistance to cracking. The American Society of Testing and Materials, has a minimum standard for tear strength of shingles on the market.
