The EPA has been defining the Septic Wastewater Infiltration System or drainfield, by the limiting conditions of the site in a much more thorough mannet than just a simple perocoltion test, just how rapidly the soil of the property absorbs the water. septic system: Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Two - 08/31/09 09:09 PM
Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Two, the EPA and other agencies, have been giving the shallow drainfield, where all soil life resides, a whole lot more credit for the job that shallow drainfields do in treating the waste from the home. This sure is another reason the EPA places such emphasis on maintaining the vadose zone, where the soil receives oxygen from the air. This zone is essential to maintaining a healthy ecology of soil bacteria and maximizing uptake of nutrients and elimination of pathogens. There are millions of microorganisms in the trench

septic system: Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Three - 08/30/09 08:29 PM
Your Private Septic System and the Soil Type on your Property Part Three, the width and length of the infiltration surface are very important design considerations to improve performance and will limit the impact on the receiving evironment. Trenches, beds, and seepage pits (also known as dry wells) are traditionally used geometries. Seepage pits can be effective for wastewater diepersal, but sure don't provide must in the way of treatment, because they extend deep down into the soil profile, where oxygen transfer and treatment is limited and the separation distance to the ground water is reduced. septic system: A bit of Septic System History - 08/29/09 05:12 AM
A bit of Septic System History, back in 1919 C.P. Rhymus and Leslie C. Frank worked for the U.S. Public Health Service. And they did a feasibility study on the use of single family home's septic systems and small communities in America. Rhymus and Frank recommended what was called a Imhoff tank to serve a single family home of five folks. They also specified alternate drainfields fed by a distribution box, which could very will be History's first dual drainfield. Since this here tank did not have a patent or royalty restrictions, it was adopted on a wide scale for single family homes.
