Our community said goodbye to a hero yesterday, as fallen Windermere Police Officer Robert "Robbie" German was laid to rest on a cool, overcast Central Florida day.

Attending the service yesterday was somewhat bittersweet.  The general public has relatively few opportunities to express our appreciation for our law enforcement personnel on a large scale- and I was surely appreciative of the chance to show my appreciation for Officer German's sacrifice.  I always make an effort to shake hands … (2 comments)

Central Florida has lost another hero today- as Windermere Police Officer Robert German was killed in the line of duty this morning.  May God bless Officer German’s memory- and may He bless and provide comfort to his family, friends and all of Central Florida’s law enforcement family.

A good time was had by all last Thursday- as our Orlando Regional Realtor Association (ORRA) was the title sponsor for the “Central Florida Regional Leadership Forum – Advancing Our Regional Transportation Agenda”.

I joined our current chairman, two past chairmen, our chairwoman-elect and both ORRA vice chairmen in learning about a number of exciting things on the horizon for our area- and our association’s executive vice president Michael Kidd did a fine job representing us and moderating one of … (0 comments)

Orlando Chamber of Commerce- SunRail Rally 11/21/13

Orlando Chamber of Commerce- SunRail Rally 11/21/13
As with (insert name of big project requiring taxpayer dollars here) in the past, Central Florida's SunRail has had both its proponents and its opponents, its defenders and its detractors.  While the arguing and disagreements among some may continue to simmer in finitum, the practical side of SunRail is equally undeniable:  it's almost here, it's unavoidable, and all of us are best served if we do our part toward making it as successful as it can possibly be.   Anything less than our best efforts will … (2 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #40

OK.  Even the most casual of visitors to my blog here will surely know that my accompanying story won't involve the guy in the photo above.  You see, unlike this guy (who's in the crosswalk for some strange reason), folks around here typically don't frequent or patronize those "crosswalk things".
Unfortunately, being too cool for crosswalks has tragic consequences- and today's story (courtesy, Orlando Sentinel) marks the 40th instance of a pedestrian whose death was due to their not observing our … (2 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #39 Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #39 Quick- do you see the lady in this photo? If it's tough finding her in this photo while sitting at your computer or checking it out on a phone in your hand, imagine how tough it is dodging these folks as they dart in and out of our traffic every day. While she appeared to have made it safely to the other side of the road tonight, there's never a guarantee things will work out when one decides to veer off the sidewalk/crosswalk … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #38

Well, we’ve had a bit of a break in our series- but we’ve got another installment of my wildly popular Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road series today.  This one- the 38th overall- is the very first one to feature a story of a motorcycle vs. pedestrian accident.
Spoiler alert:  The motorcycle won- but one life was lost and another forever changed.  May the Lord provide comfort to the family and friends of Mr. Vazquez- and may He bring … (0 comments)

The driver who killed this pedestrian remains at large as of the last news report I heard.  While the pedestrian was wrong for being in the street, this driver who failed to stop/render aid/wait on police to arrive must now be held accountable for not doing so.

Anyone with any information, please call the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) at the number below.

It seems these are coming in bunches again- with no end in sight.  Unless and until law enforcement sees fit to enforce our pedestrian traffic laws, the old saying will remain true:  folks will continue to do whatever they wish to do "because they can".

This is another falling on your watches, Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.  How many more must die before you enforce the law and set the right example for others to follow?

I'd hope there could be … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #35

Today's story (actually from Monday) is perhaps the most telling of all the "Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road" posts I've offered.  This provides a clear witness account of how these two young men darted out into the middle of traffic despite seeing the oncoming vehicle.  They made no effort to cross at a crosswalk, and showed no concern for the motorist.
Like many around here, these two young men thought they owned the roadway- but they thought wrong.  While our local law enforcement folks are doing the right … (2 comments)

It's been amazing how quick these roadway fatalities have been coming in these days.  Every instance is both sad and tragic, but nearly every accident I've profiled here has also been preventable.

This incident from yesterday involves a hit-and-run.  May God bless and comfort the Coven family.  May He also lead the authorities to the driver of the vehicle involved, and may they be held accountable for their actions here.

Here's yet another tragic incident on our roadways- the 3rd such one in the past couple of days.  Criticizing the dead is a touchy subject, and surely makes some uncomfortable.  It's hard not to do so in these cases, though- where willful actions of the pedestrians serve to sentence motorists that follow the rules of the road to years upon years of unnecessary misery without benefit of a trial.

While generally a great representative of law enforcement and true asset to the community, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd's falling in … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #32

They're coming in fast and furious these days, and it's not a good thing.  Central Florida in general (and Orlando in particular) has come to be known as a terrible place for pedestrians.  My continuing series here looks to show that while that might indeed be true, the vast majority of these deaths are caused by the pedestrians themselves.
The following is another death that's fallen under the not-so-vigilant eyes of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney.

May God bless and comfort both the … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #31
Well, this isn't your typical "Pedestrian Tales...". To be sure, the "pedestrian" aspect of things remains the same: someone who should be on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk isn't in either of those places. That's typical- sad, but typical.
What's not typical here is that the driver of the vehicle involved is an Orange County Deputy Sheriff who had this accident while she was responding to a call for assistance. She will undoubtedly share a common mindset with the other 30 drivers who had ended the lives of … (2 comments)

Florida Whacked- All Things Whacked Aren't Equally Whacked!
Or maybe we could go with "All Things Aren't Exactly Whacked as They Appear"- inexactly whacked, if you will.  These recent cases from around here surely fit the bill for whichever moniker one chooses...
Case #1:  http://www.localwireless.com/wap/news/text.jsp?sid=147&nid=638257473&cid=378&scid=-1&ith=17&title=Local+News&headtitle=Local+News%22
Mom faces charges, daughter missed nearly 2 years of school‏ Now, this case has gotten a good bit of attention, and understandably so.  Most of the recent attention has been due to the fact that the cops apparently arrested the wrong lady- locking up a lady with the same name, but no daughter at all.  Hard … (0 comments)

Another pedestrian tragedy on the roads here. Brevard County Sheriff J.R. "Jack" Parker joins Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and other law enforcement heads around here who need to do a much better job of enforcing our pedestrian traffic laws.
One accident here, but two families affected- and both surely had a Christmas 2011 they'd like to forget.
May God bless both Mr. Taylor's family and the pedestrian's- for this accident claimed quite a few victims.
