There's been another uptick in pedestrian deaths in our area recently- no doubt owing in part to the Orlando Police Department and others' refusal to enforce our pedestrian traffic laws. Simply put, a median strip is not a sidewalk- and when missed opportunities for enforcement (and possibly for saving lives) like the one pictured above abound, there's plenty of blame to spread around when the next pedestrian dies. An older gentleman dies- but a young lady only 20 years old must deal with having run him over as he walked in front of her for the rest of her life. Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #28 Wow. This isn't the first of these apparent "suicide by automobile" incidents, and I'm sure it won't be the last. My brother-in-law actually witnessed one of these a few years ago: a lady stood on the shoulder smoking a cigarette, and she stepped in the path of a tractor-trailor when there was no chance of it slowing down. I've hit better milestones, I can assure you. But today's story is my 20th one about a needless or careless pedestrian fatality here in our Central Florida area. We can surely do better, folks...a better job of following the traffic laws ourselves, and a better job of teaching our children how to do so.

For the police on the scene to go with "they appeared to have beem drinking before the crash" without the benefit of any blood tests or breathalyzer readings, I'd say they found must have found some beer cans in the vicinity. For those not familiar with our area, the Orange Blossom Trail (or the "OBT") is a pretty busy street at all hours.
