Looking for new gadgets or strategies?  Are you really using what you have?
It's easy to get caught up in Gadget Hoopla.  If you have a laptop, you have to get that iPad.  If you have the iPad, you have to get that iPad 2- and swap stories with all of the other folks in line with you at 4 a.m.  Got an iPod?  Well, you're missing out if you don't have an iTouch.
Technology is great and all, but are we losing something by engaging … (6 comments)

Flyover projects abound in Central Florida — for now

A number of highway projects are going on here in Central Florida- and with each one of them, controversy abounds…

Some folks are fond of SunRail, which many expect to bring more business, visitors and jobs to the area. Some oppose it because of it’s expense.

Some are as fond of these flyovers as I am and see their value, while some are understandably concerned about their expense and question the value. I go against the grain and some who feel we’re to just accept some … (0 comments)

orlando: Neighborhood Watch...or no Neighborhood Watch? - 04/10/12 07:32 PM
Neighborhood Watch...or no Neighborhood Watch?
Neighborhood Watch or No Neighborhood Watch?- that is the question. Or at least one of them.
So where do you stand? Are you in favor of Neighborhood Watches, or against them? Do you feel the serve a purpose in the community you live and work in- or are they simply a bunch of nosy, busybody Gladys Kravitzes with nothing else to do with their lives but check for "foreign" vehicles along their beat?
The simmering Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case is surely causing many to give Neighborhood Watches more consideration than ever- and I'm not yet sure whether that's a … (10 comments)

orlando: ORRA Leadership Institute 2012 - 04/10/12 03:34 PM
ORRA Leadership Institute 2012
I was fortunate enough to attend the ORRA Leadership Institute last year.  Sponsored by our Orlando Regional Realtors Association (ORRA), it is by far the best value I've ever received from a class.
The first "Realtor Review" below is mine.  It was my comment at the end of the course last year, and remains so today.  It is an unbelievable course and an amazing value.
If you have the chance to attend this course, please do so.  If you're a broker with agents under you that you feel may benefit from this, please encourage them to attend.
Let's … (0 comments)

orlando: He Is Risen - 04/08/12 10:01 AM

He Is Risen
Today, we pause to celebrate the joy and blessing of our Lord and Saviour, the Risen Christ who died for our sins.
"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said." Matthew 28:6 (KJV)
From Casting Crowns' "Glorious Day"...Death could not hold Him. The grave could not keep Him from rising again.
Blessed be the Lord Jesus Christ.
He is risen. He is risen indeed!

orlando: The importance of renter's insurance - 04/06/12 09:37 PM
The importance of renter's insurance
There's no doubting the most important part of this news story- by the grace of God, a family of 5 escaped a burning house. The tragic loss of a single life is devastating; the loss of 5 in a family would seem unbearable.
But what about the end of the story?
"They rented the home and have no insurance for their belongings."
Rental (or "renter's") insurance is cheap, cheap, cheap- yet it's something I'd guess only 1/2 of my tenants over the years have carried. That number's anecdotal, of course- but the number of folks having it could be … (8 comments)

If I had a hammer....

If I had a hammer....

At first, I thought it was a bit troubling that Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis decreed that all Department of Labor buildings across the country must display these posters.  The thought that there's any type of pseudo-official endorsement of race-hustling publicity pimps Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson nearly turned my stomach.
But then I remembered all of the great things Sharpton and Jesse have in store for us as Americans.  You know- "justice" and all.
Here's your opportunity, Al and Jesse:  Prove to us here- and all of … (6 comments)

Scam you once, scam you twice...

Scam you once, scam you twice...
Yes, it's another round of rental/housing scams making their way through the metro Orlando area- this one hitting a neighborhood where Legends Realty and I manage a home.  In this case, the Neighborhood Watch did a great job in saving owners' money in both the short and long-term- and no doubt kept them from dealing with a bunch of unnecessary frustration.

Great job, Neighborhood Watch...

orlando: God Bless the Sanford Police Department - 03/27/12 12:38 AM
God Bless the Sanford Police Department
Folks will notice a new logo/image at the end of my signature line for a while. It's the badge of the embattled Sanford (FL) Police Department. I will include it for an indefinite period of time as a showing of support for this local police force- a group of folks on the streets 24 hours/day in looking to both serve and protect all of us here.
The Sanford Police Department is coming under fire from all parts of the world these days. It seems that anyone who doesn't work or have anything else to do with … (51 comments)

Lock your deadbolts first

Lock your deadbolts first
Every now and then, I'll actually stumble across a bit of knowledge I'd like to share with folks.  Now, that goes against the grain of our business- 'cause we all have Top Secret info than nobody else in the whole wide world could've ever thought of before us.  And if someone were to get hold of that info....well, I just won't even think of that scenario.
So here it goes... Check your locks- both locks- in cases where you have both a deadbolt and a knob/handle lock.  When leaving as you wrap … (6 comments)

Aloma's loss, First Baptist Atlanta's gain- one of God's soldiers marches on...

Aloma's loss, First Baptist Atlanta's gain- one of God's soldiers marches on...
This is a tough one.  There's an old Tennessee Ernie Ford country Gospel song that instructs us to live by the will of God, and to a call- or as it says, "Children go where I send thee...".  The Lord has chosen to lead Pastor Anthony George away from sunny Central Florida and Aloma Church- and has steered him towards First Baptist Atlanta.
Aloma Church says farewell to Pastor Anthony tomorrow, and I say so long … (2 comments)

How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today?

How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today?
$10 each. “Get your Trayvon Martin Memorial Rally shirts here!”  Or something like that.  Amazing how so many folks want you to believe they’re in favor of “justice”, while they’re all in it for fame and the Almighty Dollar..or $10.  I don’t know if this entrepreneur is strictly a local franchisee of some sort…or if he’s part of some entrepreneurial co-op…or… Never mind- this guy is just flat-out making money off of a dead kid.  Nothing cute about that.  And nothing cute … (9 comments)

Oh where have you gone, Common Courtesy?

Common Courtesy (and it's significant other, Common Sense) seem to have become much less common over the last week or so...or maybe it's just that some of my tenant prospects are just plain rude and inconsiderate.
Need to re-schedule a showing appointment?  No problem.  Forgot about me until I called to confirm- so you need to call back with a better date?  Cool.  Gotta cancel (even at the last minute) 'cause your dog ate some homework from that Pre-Med class you're takin', and you just have to re-do it right now?  OK, not … (16 comments)

Love America?  Hire a Veteran Today
Why are the simplest of things often hard?  Why is “common sense” so uncommon?  And why the heck is the unemployment rate for our returning war heroes higher than our nation’s overall unemployment rate?
As my granny used to say, “Somebody oughtta be ashamed”.  In this case, America, that “somebody” is all of us.
Love America?  Hire a Veteran Today
12.1% to 8.7%- veterans lose.  Our country’s heroes leave the Jersey Shores, South Beach and all points between there and California‘s coastline. They leave family, friends and all luxuries behind- from a trip to that great steakhouse down the street to making … (10 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #21

Another senseless Central Florida fatality... this time, a young girl taken from us far too soon.  This falls under the watch of Deland Police Chief Bill Ridgway and Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson.
May God bless young Julianne Hobbs' family- and may the motorist responsible for her death be found soon.

Pedestrian Tales From The Middle of the Road, #20

I've hit better milestones, I can assure you.  But today's story is my 20th one about a needless or careless pedestrian fatality here in our Central Florida area.  We can surely do better, folks...a better job of following the traffic laws ourselves, and a better job of teaching our children how to do so.

And law enforcement can surely do a better job of enforcing our pedestrian laws.  Does anyone really enjoy driving down the road at 40-50 mph and having someone just stroll out in front of them?  … (5 comments)

Tragedy, racism and a circus:  the death of Trayvon Martyr Martin

Editor’s note for those outside of our little part of America:  Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old young black man when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man.
I hate this Trayvon Martin story….hate it, hate it, hate it- for it’s a story filled with nothing but losers.  Death crowns no victors save the one(s) who’ve gone home to see the face of Jesus- and the circumstances surrounding Trayvon Martin’s death are known but to … (11 comments)

Real estate's hot...from "OC" to shining "OC"
It's been a long time...for many, a looooong time.  Signs that the overall real estate market is improving are everywhere, though- from Orange County, CA to Orange County, FL (or as I see it, from the West coast's "OC" to our "OC").

The story from California is encouraging, and goes along with what I've seen here in the past few months- it's become an investor's market once again.  Rents are going up- and that serves to help me overcome what it often my biggest … (5 comments)

orlando: Dear Dwight Howard: Please go...just go! - 03/13/12 04:55 PM

Dear Dwight Howard:  Please go...just go!
A ton of folks have tried to get our Orlando Magic All-Star Dwight Howard to stay here- including the fine folks who crafted this sign:

Dear Dwight Howard:  Please go...just go!
Me?  I arrived here as a Houston Rockets fan over 4 years ago, and I can honestly say I've become a true Orlando Magic fan.  Went to the NBA Finals with 'em a couple of years ago...saw Kobe and Pau hoist that dang gold trophy as I swiped confetti from the top of my head.  I've seen some great Magic wins and … (2 comments)

ACCENTuate the positive...ATTITUDE is everything

ACCENTuate the positive...ATTITUDE is everything
Sounds simple enough, right?  Well, many folks have trouble with this concept- leading me to believe it might be a bit harder than I've always thought it to be.
Or perhaps the concept is easy and the practice is that elusive and unsolvable riddle many of us would be well served in by mastering.
ACCENTuate the positive...ATTITUDE is everything
I don't use ACCENT by accident- or solely for the cuteness of ACCENTuate.  Rather, a funny thing has happened over the last few days involving the way I talk.  I've had … (4 comments)
