This is a story from the Ocala area that would be somewhat amusing were it not for the tragic ending- guy leaves strip club and walks backwards into the path of a bus...
This incident falls under the watch of Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham and Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair.

Folks around here will even run out in front of a cop car. It seems like this young man will live to tell of his story- and I hope he tells others not to dart out into traffic! West Palm boy struck by police cruiser recovering, his father says Raymundo Perez told police he had yelled at his son numerous times for darting off the bus and sprinting across the street, police said. But the parent's warnings weren't enough (2 comments)
Whether local folks or out-of-towners, the result is always the same when one chooses to step into the path of a car. And in this case, there was no "strength in numbers".
This death was yet another falling under the watch of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief John W. Mina. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-benjamin-meza-dead-pedestrian-20141101-story.html

It's a bit surprising that it's been so long since my last "Pedestrian Tales..." post (back in May or so)- but I can assure folks the reason behind that lies in my being busy doing other things rather than any lack of pedestrians illegally crossing the road.
There's been an increase in these jaywalking incidents over the last week or so- awesome in a bad way and devastating to far too many families. I'll document these in this (0 comments)
One thing we don't seem to be teaching our students is how to cross the street. Elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and (apparently) colleges have all missed out on this opportunity to educate folks at a young age that it's best to cross in a crosswalk at an intersection. It might not always be the coolest thing to do, but following just a few simple rules might just keep you alive. Another death under the watch of Orange (0 comments)
I think I'd have to say that the one thing that continues to amaze me about the way pedestrians walk out into traffic here is the fact that more often than not, they are within 100 feet of a crosswalk. Call it ignorance (I won't), arrogance (I might) or stupidity (I do), the end result is the same- another dead pedestrian and another family with a member that won't return home. This is yet another death falling under the (0 comments)
Funny thing about these "accidents" (or "crashes", as they often call them): I've never seen one where the story has told of a mangled vehicle and a pedestrian who walked away. Hmmm...
FHP: Pedestrian struck by tractor-trailer, car while running across I-95
A pedestrian attempting to dash across Interstate 95 was struck by two cars and killed Friday night. The deadly crash happened about 8:40 p.m. near U.S. Highway 1 in Volusia County, trooper say. The pedestrian, (0 comments)
Sad thing, no doubt- but after writing about these for a while, they all start blurring together. It also changes your perception of things somewhat- and you find yourself saying "I can't believe...." less and less.
Pedestrian killed in east Orange crash A pedestrian was killed late Thursday after he was hit by a car on east Colonial Drive, according to Florida Highway Patrol. The man's name has not been released. He is said to be "past middle (0 comments)
There's been another uptick in pedestrian deaths in our area recently- no doubt owing in part to the Orlando Police Department and others' refusal to enforce our pedestrian traffic laws. Simply put, a median strip is not a sidewalk- and when missed opportunities for enforcement (and possibly for saving lives) like the one pictured above abound, there's plenty of blame to spread around when the next pedestrian dies. To be sure, I am a "personal responsibility" guy- and I believe the (0 comments)
I hate using absolutes, but it's quite possible that this is the worst "tale" of the 58 I've written about thus far. Pedestrians being hit by cars around here? Seems to be a daily occurrence, with fatalities increasing. Pedestrians hit by more than one vehicle? Fairly rare, but it happens from time to time. But a guy getting hit by FIVE vehicles? This is one that might just keep you up at night... Five vehicles strike pedestrian in fatal (2 comments)
After a bit of a hiatus, it's back to the same ol' same ol' around here. It'll never cease to amaze me how some are surprised at pedestrian deaths when the crosswalks never cross their minds. This death falls under the watch of perhaps my favorite sheriff of all time- Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
Well, here we go again. After finishing up her texts and Facebook updates, the young frogger pictured above made it across the street without injury. A gentleman who decided to walk in the middle of I-4 yesterday morning didn't fare quite as well.
When metaphor becomes reality, getting "hit by a Mack truck" isn't the best place to start...

Jaywalking...an Orlando family tradition that took a tragic turn this Christmas. There are some things we shouldn't pass along to our kids- and the habit of jaywalking should be pretty high on the "not to" list.... Another tragedy- yet a very preventable one if folks would only use sidewalks for walking and let cars use the streets.

Well, we couldn't roll into a hoilday weekend without a bit of a pedestrian safety wake-up call, could we? This story, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel, reflects yet another example of how folks around here simply can't stay out of the street... pedestrian tales: Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #52

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #52 Well, it's been a while since I posted one of these. I'm sure I've missed a few in the time that's passed since my last posting (and I'm going to do my best to catch up), but what follows is much of what remains far too typical here: pedestrian disobeys traffic laws and walks into the street, vehicle comes along and tries to avoid pedestrian, they can't do it, pedestrian dies. Hard to misunderstand or misconstrue what happened here- as the caption from the story's video says it all: "Man walking in (2 comments)
Oh well. Another day, another pedestrian killed on our roadways for venturing out where they shouldn't be, where motorists shouldn't expect them to be, and where yet another motorist must re-live an avoidable tragedy for the rest of his life. Unless and until our local law enforcement agencies decide they would truly like to put an end to these by enforcing our pedestrian traffic laws, these will continue. Let's review the highlights of this story in head-shake mode, if you will: lady walking in the middle of the (8 comments)
Program created to lessen pedestrian deaths in Orlando?
I'd surely like to believe this is the case- but I just as surely have my reservations about any of the programs I've heard of thus far. I have a number of reasons for those reservations- for while I've just chronicled the 50th local pedestrian death as part of my Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road series, I simply don't feel that our local law enforcement officials "get it". The Best Foot Forward program being implemented by a coalition of local elected and (0 comments)
This story from earlier in the month would shock many folks. The thought of a pedestrian being killed while trying to cross the street would be alarming in and of itself- but the thought of said pedestrian being hit and/or run over by at least 3 vehicles should be all the more scary.
Sadly, it's not at all surprising to folks around here who have become all but numb to these pedestrian deaths. The death chronicled here is yet another one on the watch of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando (7 comments)
A birthday celebration turns into sadness- as local woman (apparently) leaves party for a walk down Interstate 4. No fairy tale ending to this story, folks. Sadly, this death comes under the watch of one of my favorite local law enforcement officials- Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
