Now, what was your name again?

Now, what was your name again?

Well, it's confessional time, of sorts- or the closest my Baptist self will come to it, I suppose:  I am bad at remembering names... scratch that- I am really, really bad at remembering names.

I've heard it said that 80% of the times one is handed a pen to try out, they'll write their name.  No hard evidence to support that that I've seen, mind you (and I might argue that drawing a bunch of squiggly lines is near the top of the list, too), but … (8 comments)

Where will you spend Memorial Day 2012?

Where will you spend Memorial Day 2012?
Tomorrow is the day we've set aside to honor our true heroes.  That's true heroes- not Mickey Mouse, not Michael Jordan, not Lady GaGa (absolutely not Lady GaGa).  Memorial Day isn't for the famous- rather, it's a day when we look to give honor to the endless sea of crosses at Arlington and the American soldier who rests in honored glory and whose name is known but to God.
As for me, I will spend the day in Sanford, Florida- a city much-maligned and wrongly-maligned … (4 comments)

Remembering 9/11....9/11/06
Along with the rest of America, I'm "remembering 9/11" today.  Unlike the rest of America, I'm remembering 9/11/06 even more vividly.
On "the" 9/11, I was at home for some reason and had the TV on.  I wasn't paying a great deal of attention to it, really- it was more background noise than anything else.  The 1st plane had hit the World Trade Center, and Katie Couric was reporting on what was (at the time) a "wacky story".  While she was talking, I could see the 2nd plane hitting the other tower in the picture behind her.
It was so bizarre- … (0 comments)

I remember when...just like it was yesterday
How many times have you uttered those words- "I remember when...just like it was yesterday"?
And of all the times you've uttered those words, how often have you been thinking of something good- or of someone who's either grown up too soon or gone too soon?  Or of something you did to help someone- or something someone did to help you.
I know I do it all the time.  I can't believe I joined the Navy 24 years ago, can't believe I've been out for 16 years now.  That is the tough one- hard … (0 comments)

The above photos are both of the U.S.S. Stark (FFG-31).  The photo on the left was taken on May 17, 1987- as she gave way a bit after absorbing two Exocet missiles fired from an Iraqi Mirage jet.  The "accidental" strike from a pilot who later claimed he thought the Stark was an Iranian oil tanker took the lives of 37 young men.  It remains to this day the last time an enemy projectile has hit a U.S. Navy ship.  The photo on the right shows the Stark's crew manning the rails as she arrived back in Mayport, FL … (4 comments)
