Homebuyer Tax Credit Expanded and Extended It's Official. Today President Obama signed legislation that extends and expands the former First Time Homebuyers credit. The credit is now simply called the Homebuyer Tax Credit. The National Association of Realtors has provided a chart which lists changes from the original First Time Homebuyers Tax Credit. tax credit: Back To The Work Bench – Using First-Time Homebuyer’s $8,000 Tax Credit Towards Down Payment Details Being Hammered Out. - 05/18/09 04:39 PM
There was a lot of chatter last week after HUD's announcement about first-time buyers being able to use the $8,000 tax credit towards their down payment. HUD rescinded its agreement on Friday, May 15, because all details were not worked out. I think NAR may have jumped the gun with its announcement. The short-term loan program would permit eligible lenders to make bridge loans that would be collateralized by the tax credit, which would allow first-time buyers to use the expected $8,000 tax credit at closing towards the down payment. There are 10 states that already have such a loan

Good News! The Secretary of HUD has announced that FHA first-time homebuying consumers will be able to access the $8,000 tax credit and use it as a down payment when they close on their home. Previously, buyers would not be able to access the credit until they filed their 2009 return or amended their 2008 return. This should certainly be welcomed news to those buyers who qualify for the credit. Who doesn't want or need some down payment money? According to the news release, the home buyers will be able to ‘monetize' the credit through a short-term bridge loan. Details are
