Welcome to the busiest weekend in Porpoise Point, the wonderful waterfront neighborhood in Vilano Beach, FL. It is one of the best places to view the St. Augustine fireworks from the St. Augustine inlet at Porpoise Point, and a great place to spend the day at the beach. With jet skis, kayaking, boating, surf fishing, stand up paddle surfing, skim boarding, hunting for shark's teeth, swimming, kitesurfing, and more, it's a wonder if you will ever leave the beach at Vilano Beach.

St. Augustine Inlet Dredging UpdateSt. Augustine Port, Waterway, and Beach District (aka St. Augustine Port Authority) Commissioner Jay Bliss reported that there is $500,000 available for dredging Porpoise Point located at the St. Augustine Inlet and the Intracoastal in Northeast Florida. Some 80,000 cubic yards will be dredged from Porpoise Point, widening the inlet and hopefully reducing the velocities of the current in the area. Plans are that hopefully St. Johns County will get the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permits to dredge the ebbshoal bars in the St. Augustine Inlet within the week (by the end of April 2011). I am enjoying watching the boats go by here in Porpoise Point for the 2010 FOUNTAIN MERCURY KINGBUSTER 400 tournament that is happening in St. Augustine, Florida today, Friday, June 11th and tomorrow June 12th. It is limited to 400 boats (thus the name).
It is like watching a boat parade. The boats are filled with families and is a great sight to see.
This tournament is touted as the premiere Southern Kingfish competition of the year. Over $175,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded.

Tomorrow, November 17th at 3 p.m. at 2200 A1A in St. Augustine Beach City Hall is the St. Augustine Port, Waterway & Beach District Meeting that will be discussing dredging the St. Augustine Inlet and Intracoastal Waterway that I blogged about last week.

The Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is planning to dredge the St. Augustine Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway. There will be a public meeting on November 17, 2009 starting at 3 p.m. at the St. Augustine Beach City Hall, 2100 A1A S., St. Augustine Beach, FL at the St. Augustine Port, Waterway & Beach District meeting.
Articles have been written in local publications about the dredging of the inlet to renourish St. Augustine Beach at the possible detriment to the properties north of the St. Augustine inlet in Vilano Beach, North Beach, and South Ponte Vedra Beach.

When we moved from Ponte Vedra to St. Augustine (North Beach) in 1998, the first night after we closed on the purchase of our new home, we went to dinner with our new neighbors. We walked a couple of blocks to Oscar's. I was in very casual clothes and had to borrow my neighbor's sandals, which were many sizes too big. But, I knew it was a casual place and would be fine. VILANO BEACH IN NORTHEAST FLORIDA IS CONFUSING IN SOME OF THE NAMES.
Vilano Beach, the closest beach to downtown historic St. Augustine, has evolved to include many of the neighboring subdivisions.
Porpoise Point is the southern-most subdivision of what is commonly referred to Vilano Beach. Porpoise Point has its own homeowner's association, which is really comprised of a private water plant and an Architectural Control Committee. The Homeowner Association (HOA) dues are really the property owner's water bill. Each property owner pays a different HOA based on his or her previous year's usage. On Monday afternoon, November 3rd around 5 p.m., we watched a seaplane taxi up the Intracoastal around Porpoise Point and up to Vilano. It had just landed after having flown over the area. Here's a photo I took.

I now learn that the seaplane had an accident yesterday, November 4th just north of the Usina (Vilano) Bridge. I have not seen this seaplane before and it was exciting to see him in the St. Augustine area. I am glad the pilot is well and hope to see him again soon.

As President of the Friends of A1A, I am proud to announce that the International Coastal Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th. This annual event, taking place in seventy-five countries around the globe, will see Friends of A1A doing a cleanup of the beach and dunes at Porpoise Point from 8AM until noon.
We will be at the beach access located at Porpoise Point Drive and Genoa Street. Call or e-mail me and I will send you directions if you need them.
