Sniffle, sniffle, sniffle. Would those $75 nose drops help? - 04/30/08 07:52 AM
Waking up two days ago with a little bad cold reminded me of my trip to the doctor awhile back. I complained at that time about little allergies and stuffy nose and he told me that he had the right thing for the problem. He gave me a sample of nose drops assuring me that I'd never know I was taking them. They'd take care of any stuffy noses of the future. I used them, wondering whether they were really doing any good but not really seeing or feeling any difference. But, what the heck, I'd continue with them. I went to

Listening to Sirius satellite radio while on my computer - 04/29/08 09:12 AM
When I bought my new vehicle I got free Sirius radio for a year. That time has now passed and it was time to renew. I'd heard from one of my friends that he listened to Sirius through the computer. I'd done their free trial and loved it but didn't want to pay extra for the pleasure. Strangely, the Sirius people didn't give an internet address for renewing. You had to call a number. And there was a REAL PERSON that talked to me. I asked her about listening on line to Sirius. She said no problem because it is included in the

One level condo in Searcy Arkansas. Having a living estate auction. - 04/27/08 03:56 PM
We don't have a lot of condos in Searcy Arkansas, a small 20,000 population city approximately 50 miles from Little Rock Arkansas. The first ones built were exciting for our city but the builder made a mistake. He had an "outsider architect" plan them and though they were beautiful they had a problem. They were expensive and the bedrooms were all upstairs with a very steep staircase to get to them. Young buyers couldn't afford them and older buyers couldn't climb the stairs. After a few of those duds, the builders got wise and did better planning. This one is

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson - 04/26/08 10:30 AM
Who hasn't heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? I've heard of and probably seen the movie. I just found a book in my house that is OLD and it is titled Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. I'm almost out of new reading material so I decided to read this old classic. I assume it could be called a classic. I expected to spend several days and get really involved in the tale because books are always better than movies. The book is about an inch thick so I knew it might take a while to finish. On

Renew your vehicle license in Arkansas by internet. So Easy. - 04/23/08 07:19 AM
Folks in Arkansas used to go to the Revenue Department to renew their license plates on their vehicles. You'd try to avoid busy days and hope you didn't have to take a number that had 10 or so people ahead of you. Things have changed for the better! We can now renew on line. It is fresh on my mind right now because I just did it again. It is a 5 step process which requires your putting in your renewal id no and a verification code and your odometer reading. You view your fee, pay your fee with a credit

Just who are you anyhow? I love comments and I'd like to know who you are. - 04/22/08 07:35 AM
Many comments come through. We love comments. But we also want to know who you are. I personally would like to know where you are from, city and state. I'd kinda like to know if you have designations, or whether you are a stager, a home inspector, mortgage broker, etc. I didn't learn easily but I finally figured out that when you are in "edit profile" you can fill in your first name on that blank and on the second blank where it asks for your last name put it in but then add the other things. In my case I put

Do you have a drawer like this in your office? - 04/20/08 10:16 AM
Conventions are so much fun. You go around the convention center exhibit hall and they give you freebies! You have so many freebies that you are loaded down. Now when we fly home from convention we may have to pay extra for luggage! Then bankers come by your office and give you mugs and planners and key chains and all kinds of freebies. Then home inspectors come by and give you candies and freebies. I love every one of these things and end up sticking them in a drawer for further use. (Except the food; I eat it or someone else does!) My favorites

Searcy Arkansas Junior Auxiliary 2008 Charity Ball photos - 04/19/08 10:32 AM
Years ago I was a member of the Searcy Junior Auxiliary. You serve for 5 years and then you can become a life member, which I still am. While being an active member the goal is to help children. The members have various projects to help the children and they have one big charity ball to raise money to fund the projects. They do a great job and work hard on their projects and on the annual ball. Searcy Living Magazine has posted beautiful photos of the Charity Ball. Go to their web site and chick on Black and White Charity Ball

See a burned-out house and an example of thorough marketing for a change. - 04/18/08 07:58 AM
We have done a lot of griping lately about not enough MLS photos, inferior quality of MLS photos and how agents just don't seem to get it! Lots of agents just don't understand that the internet is full of shoppers and the shoppers are not happy with the quality of photos they are getting. While looking at the new listings today in our MLS there was a new entry by my good friend Larry DeGroat who is always a step or two above the rest of us. The house is a burn-out. Once lived in by Searcy elite, it has burned badly.

A little information about Arkansas real property taxes - 04/17/08 01:29 PM
Amendment 79 to the Arkansas Constitution created two important savings for Arkansas residents regarding property taxes on their personal residence. The homeowner gets a tax credit. To qualify the taxpaper must use the property as his or her primary residence for at least 6 month each year and be the owner of record. A person holding a recorded life estate in real property also qualifies. The tax credit will be increased to $350 per homestead this year, up from $300. Additional saving was also created for any person who is disabled or 65 years of age or older. The assessed value of the

For your protection get a home inspection in Arkansas - 04/16/08 12:12 PM
Interesting information that I discovered from reading our Arkansas real estate magazine called "Realtor Rightings" was found in an article written by Bob Balhorn, ARA Government Affairs Director. He said that when a person builds a new home or structure outside the city limits of an Arkansas city you can assume that the only part of the structure that has been inspected is the septic system. It is the only state required inspection! The state building code has lots of requirements but there is no enforcement mechanism for making sure the code is adhered to. You can complete the house and have all

Spring colors in Searcy Arkansas - 04/14/08 10:23 AM
Walking by my azalea bush in the back yard, I was almost blinded by the color. It will only last a few days and be gone. Looking at the neighbor's yard, I saw this tree that is also so colorful. With flooding all over Arkansas, as you've probably read in the news, it should be cheerful to see something pretty and colorful. BUT, it is colder than the dickens here (old Southern saying and I don't know what it means) so all our new flowers may get killed tonight by late freeze.

Finding a residential rental property in Searcy Arkansas - 04/12/08 08:06 AM
We are pleased to have new people moving to Searcy. Several families are being relocated to White County as gas wells are being built and all the jobs that go with gas production are filled. Everyone is excited as we watch to see what happens in this previously quiet town. At this point, Searcy has no central rental agency. Other towns have places to go and have someone find you a rental. Not Searcy. The best we offer right now is a rental sheet with a list of what we have been told is available. We offer it as a courtesy and

BETTER THAN NEW HOUSE IN SEARCY ARKANSAS - 04/11/08 08:56 AM
REALTORS have a saying about a house that is about two or three years old. We sometimes call it a "better than new house" because some owner has worked on the yard, added the window coverings and sometimes added a privacy fence. This house located on Shawn Terrace in Searcy AR qualifies for that description. Best of all is the addition of the Plantation Shutters that are custom made and go all across the front of the house. I understand the shutters are extremely expensive and when I questioned the gentleman who is co-owner about the huge expense and why he made

Historic house in Searcy as it was then and as it is now. - 04/07/08 12:49 PM
This great old house in Searcy has been here for a long time. It is located near downtown Searcy and was built before the street was paved, as you can see in the original picture. I once had it listed and the inside was so interesting with lovely wood trim and wood floors and butler's pantry and a sleeping porch upstairs. I have not been inside in several years but I hope it hasn't changed too much. I personally think it is interesting to compare the house when it was new with no trees or shrubs and how it is now with a

Freeze your personal home real estate taxes in Arkansas if you are 65 or handicapped. - 04/05/08 05:35 PM
Having been in real estate for many years and thinking I was pretty smart, I was absolutely bowled over when we had a member of the tax assessor's office come and speak to us a few years ago. She mentioned "freezing your real estate taxes on your personal home" as a benefit to people over 65 or handicapped! WHAT! How come I'd never heard of such a thing. The cat was out of the bag, so to speak......I don't believe a real estate agent in that room had ever heard of such a thing. Since then we have added it to

Choosing the Familiar according to the book Selling the Invisible - 04/01/08 10:33 AM
I'm reading through the book "Selling the Invisible" by Harry Beckwith that was sent to me by John K. Carpenter of Fayetteville Arkansas as a congratulatory gift for being a member of the RE/MAX 100% Club. I'm over to page 89 on a Chapter called " How Prospects Decide: Choosing the Familiar." He says, "The evidence suggests that it is better to be known badly than not to be known at all. This is due to a human trait called attribute forgetting. Let's say you hear something negative about a company. As time passes you tend to forget that negative information--you forget
