barbara s duncan realtor: Never thought I'd see this in the middle of town. Code violation? Corner out-house. - 06/05/11 01:44 AM
REOs are challenging.
REOs make you walk through them timidly.
REOs make you spray your legs with insect repellent before entering.
But I never thought an REO would have one of these in the middle of a nice subdivision.
Here's what showed from the corner of the yard.

It was a big yard but I needed to see what it was.  When I opened the door, I was surprised to find this.

I still don't know what the round thing on the outside is.

barbara s duncan realtor: VIPs from Searcy Arkansas in the 50's. Who are they? Searcy Sleuth's puzzle. - 04/03/11 01:59 PM
Searcy Arkansas in the 50's was evidently a fun place to live.  Looking back through an old annual I found two really lovely girls who were important persons in their school years.
First, I found this young lady who was co-editor of the yearbook.  That's a big honor!  Here she is?  Who is she?

Then I found a real treasure.  This lady was named Miss Searcy High School!  What a thrill!  So who was she?  If you know who they are, you need to tell something about them when you identify them.

Be sure to note the styles.  Saddle … (24 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Frozen Delite Searcy AR. Kid's hangout for many years. What fun! - 08/29/10 02:25 PM

What fun!  Hanging out at Frozen Delite in Searcy Arkansas several years ago.  It was a new group of kids.  Bell bottom jeans, vests, boots, and lots of hair.  At least different from the 50's.
Frozen Delite was at the time of this photo located at 2200 East Race and a phone book says the owner was Jerry Manley.  That's from a 1987 phone book.  Perhaps Searcy readers will remember how long it had been there at that time.  Perhaps Searcy readers will know who these ladies were.
Now Frozen Delite is located at 2030 S Benton Street and caters to lots … (20 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Searcy Junior High School Old Aerial View. A glimpse of history of Searcy Arkansas. - 08/15/10 05:58 AM
The phone rang sometime in the 70's, I believe, and I can't find the exact date.
But....
A friend said, "I hear that the Junior High School building is burning!"
Looking outside, we could see the smoke and blazes because we didn't live far away.  It was a very sad day for Searcy Arkanasas to see the beautiful old brick school building ruined.  Two of our kids were still in Junior High so it really was devastating to them.
Cliff Emfinger, who had attended that  school, sent me this wonderful photograph showing an aerial view of the school area.  It's worth … (20 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: A new beauty shop in Searcy Arkansas located at 1210 E Race Street. - 07/22/10 01:56 PM

There's a lovely new beauty shop in Searcy AR with the name of Adrianne's Salon and Spa.  They had their grand opening today with the Chamber of Commerce having a ribbon cutting to welcome the new business.
I stopped by and asked the owner of the business, Adrianne, and her co-workers to pose for me.  Here they are.  Adrianne Clark Patterson is on the left.  Then we find Renee Saunders, Eden Booker, Lindsey Wiley and Bethany Aures.  They were all dressed up for the big affair.
The shop was so new and so beautiful.  I wish them lots of success.

barbara s duncan realtor: Searcy in the 40's continued. Corner of N Sowell and W McRae looking East. - 04/28/10 12:19 PM
A blog a day or so ago showed the mud street leading to the house where my husband grew up on the very fringe of Searcy Arkansas.  In the batch of pictures was this one also showing the street when looking East from the driveway of the Duncan house.
I've never seen a more beautiful child than this happy one playing with his tricycle but the interest is in the houses on the corner behind him. The old one on the right was torn down probably 40 years ago.  You can see a rock house on the left side and it's still … (12 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Please tell me that this REO discovery is not Nutsy Wallenda, my little squirrelly godson. - 03/31/10 01:45 PM
I repeat, you never know what you will find at an REO property.  Look what I found at the last one I visited.

It might have been Nutsy Wallenda, my little godson from Bellingham Washington, finally arrived in Arkansas for a visit.  He wasn't afraid of me and posed nicely for this picture.  You know what a ham Nutsy is...........
A little while later I came back near this tree and Oooops!!   I almost missed this view of a worn out squirrel.  It has to be the way Nutsy looks after a round of insults and battling with Mr. C, … (12 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: I love a good ghost story. Here's one from our haunted Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs! - 03/03/10 07:23 AM

This story was in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette today, Mar 2 2010.  I always love a good ghost story and this one comes close to topping most of the ones I've heard.  I've been into the lobby of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs Arkansas but haven't had the courage to spend the night.
Plan to vacation in our beautiful state of Arkansas!

barbara s duncan realtor: Searcy Arkansas kids from the 50's having lots of fun on band trips. - 02/19/10 11:58 AM
My friend Paula shares these pictures of some of the band members from old Searcy Arkansas on trips to outings.  She took these in the 50's and they are fascinating today.  We see in these photos the way they dressed then, the activities they participated in and their love of life.  They seemed to love eating, drinking (I hope they were not really drinking beer in the restaurant picture), bobby sox and short shorts.  I don't know what school buses look like today but I do remember riding on the buses that looked like this inside.
If any of you readers see … (21 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Time for Searcy Arkansas history again. Old house as it is today. - 11/20/09 01:40 PM
A friend of mine, eons ago, was preparing to move and had a lot of things to throw away.  Being a scavenger, I claimed some of it.  One thing she had was several pictures and floorplans of houses in Searcy that had been designed and built by her husband.  I guess they were built probably in the 40's and 50's. The houses were not fancy.  I kept the pictures in my car for a long time and tried to find which ones they were because they were not addressed.
Here's one of the old pictures.
And here's the way it looks … (24 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Are the four bedroom sets included in the sale of the house? - 11/12/09 02:11 AM
Looking through the new listings today on our MLS hotsheet I saw this house that looked interesting.  It was around $220000 in a great area.
What do we do first?
We look through the 15 pictures.   Right?  That's what I did.
That's what a buyer is going to do when it goes out into the wild blue yonder called the internet.
I saw two pictures of the front, with photographer moved over about 10' before snapping the second shot.
I saw about 4 pictures of bedroom sets that might be for sale. (Well, why else would they be featured?)  I saw … (16 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Revenge will be sweet if I live long enough to see it. Their feet will hurt!!! - 10/12/09 12:32 AM
Clip, clip, clip, klop, kloppety, klop.......here she comes again.....
"She" means all the women in my office who wear "bad" shoes.  Dumb shoes is what I call them.  There is a pergo floor in the hall and the sounds of those shoes grate on the nerves.
A little filler in the paper today said this.  More than 60% of women select damaging shoes.  Based on the questioning of 3,378 men and women from Framingham, Mass., the study indicated that only 2% of men choose bad shoes.  The questions were based on past and present and the women's answers showed a definite link … (28 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: The Hawkins Clinic 1940 at the corner of Grand Avenue and East Market. - 08/24/09 05:14 AM
This great old picture showed up on ebay and I splurged and bought it to share with Searcy readers.  It is the best photograph that I've seen of the clinic.
The clinic, as I understand, was actually a hospital.  My husband says that his children were born there and he may have had a surgery or two himself at this hospital.
This shows it in 1940 and there is no need to go take a picture of the parking lot that is there now.  A parking lot is a parking lot is a parking lot.  Right?  It's location was right in … (31 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Hey!! We have a new post office in Searcy Arkansas and it's at RE/MAX Advantage, my office location! - 07/25/09 02:58 AM
We could see the signs going up on one end of our building at 1507 E Race St, Searcy Arkansas.
Signs indicated that a US Post Office was being installed.
I rushed to the broker and said, "What's going on down there!"
"We're putting in a post office, contract office."
My reply, "Hallelujah!  Is it one of those that you have to pay extra for service?"
"No, it's full service with no extra fees," he assured me.  "It is actually going to be taking the place of the one that was so popular at the entrance to River Oaks Subdivision.  The … (5 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Brilliant observation. The bigger the tree the older the house! - 07/22/09 01:58 PM

Do you ever feel as if you've just discovered something?
All of a sudden you're driving from the new subdivision with beautiful new houses with lawns that are perfect and flower beds that don't have to have the leaves blown out and you can take perfect pictures of the houses for your MLS photos.
Then you move to a 30 year old subdivision and you can hardly take a picture because of the trees that have become so big that they cover your view.
Then you go to a 50 year old subdivision and the picture is impossible. Fergit it!!

barbara s duncan realtor: Google videos are becoming as bad as TV? Sneaky advertisements. - 07/20/09 01:28 AM
I hate TV because there are so many advertisements.  I do like Google news because it comes in at your command and at your convenience.  And it used to come in with few advertisements.
Today I clicked  on the video of Bowe Bergdahl who has been captured and is on video with things to say about his feelings and his fears and his country.
I had to listen to a commercial about Round-Up the Weed Killer treatment to get rid of weeds in your yard or garden.  I didn't want a commercial!  I just wanted to her what Bowe had to say.

barbara s duncan realtor: Our little RE/MAX Advantage entrepreneur is back this summer. - 06/30/09 12:07 AM
Last year I wrote a blog about Rainey, the broker's son who hangs around our office in the summer because it is boring at home.
Here he is again.  He needs to borrow 30 cents again and reminds me
that his credit is good.  He paid me back last year.>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now here he is beaming at me
after he has paid me back the
30 cents WITH INTEREST this
year.  He actually gave me
35 cents because he wants to
make sure his credit is really
really good with me.

barbara s duncan realtor: Armstrong Springs Baseball Team. White County Arkansas 1917!! - 05/03/09 12:04 AM

One of our RE/MAX agents was going through her desk and found several great old pictures of her relatives.  She said I could share them on my blog.  This first one is the Armstrong Springs Ball Team from 1917.  Her dad, Noel Woodson, is the one on the right on the back row.  The agent's name is Ruby Nell Woodson Moye.
Armstrong Springs is not even known as a town at the present time but then it had a hotel which had healing springs and folks came for the healing waters, so Ruby reported.  Later on it became … (12 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: Jack the Ripper day in Searcy Arkansas.....fog takes over. - 04/29/09 12:18 AM
When conversation gets strained, what can you talk about?
The weather, of course!  Why do so many salesmen (men are worse than women) start every conversation with a weather observation or question?  It's a non-controversial subject!
So today in Searcy Arkansas, I'm talking about the weather.  Here are the fog pictures from my house this morning. One is the golf course and one is from the front door.
My kids used to love foggy nights and called them "Jack the Ripper" nights and shivered with fear as they went safely about their way.  In London once on a vacation trip … (24 comments)

barbara s duncan realtor: One bird saved. Several cats angry! My daughter's story..... - 04/25/09 12:54 AM
This story is from my daughter.....I liked it so much I'm blogging it.....
Had a big adventure last night.
The cats (my three plus a few more) had downed a bird and appeared to be taking turns plucking it for a group dinner. I arrived home to find them crouched in a loose circle in the backyard - typical hunting formation. I was almost afraid to look at what lay in the center of the circle. Usually, it's dead already -- or nearly dead, which is worse.
Still, into the hunt scene I charged, to find an injured bird on its … (24 comments)
