barbara s duncan searcy ar: How a bear feels when he gets tranquilized and falls out of a tree. - 05/29/09 06:29 AM
A bear story made the news in Arkansas. The state newspaper Arkansas Democrat-Gazette carried the cute story of a bear being caught somewhere in the city.  They tranquilize the bear, pull a tooth for some reason and tag him and go put him out in the woods somewhere.
The editorial section had this funny story from the bear's point of view.  I'm not sure which writer did this but I thought it was funnier than Alan Elvis May.  I loved reading it as I had my morning coffee.  I hope they don't mind my sharing it with you.

barbara s duncan searcy ar: Activerain has brought me a new friend and a new gift! Old maps CD! - 03/23/09 12:14 AM
Being on Activerain has been interesting.  I've had people contact me that I never would have heard from otherwise.  This week I got an email from a Searcy resident who is a collector of maps.....lots of maps.  In fact he sells them on ebay and has a 100% satisfaction rating out of 1569 transactions.
His name is Jim Bohannon and he asked if I'd like to have a complimentary copy of his CD of 95 Arkansas Railroad and Road Maps from 1833 to 1935.  He has seen me put up old pictures of Searcy.   I eagerly replied that I'd love one!!  … (4 comments)

barbara s duncan searcy ar: Pickled eggs for Christmas? Do you think that is equal to a lump of coal? - 12/26/08 06:16 AM

I've heard of pickled eggs.
I don't remember ever getting any for Christmas until now and I hope they are not for punishment like St. Nick's putting coal in your stocking.
You usually hear about pickled eggs that are in a big jar on the bar at some honky-tonk and when you get hungry you just buy one of those eggs rather than quit drinking and go home.  I thought they were a thing of the past and read that "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book," the red-and-white plaid standard for home cooks, has dropped the recipe for pickled eggs from its pages.
But all … (30 comments)

barbara s duncan searcy ar: What's my home worth now? Why can't I sell it and buy a larger house? - 12/15/08 11:49 PM
Years and years ago, VA loans for veterans was the only loan one could get in with no money down.  Now the trick to that was it was no money down for the veteran but it was lots of money out for the seller.
The seller had to pay all the closing costs for the veteran in order for him to get in a home without any money.  So let's simplify.  A house was listed for $50,000.
Remember this was a LONG time ago.
If a cash buyer came along and offered $45,000 he might be able to buy the house.
If … (19 comments)

barbara s duncan searcy ar: SOLD. They found all the pictures on the internet and bought without visiting. - 12/06/08 05:01 AM
This is the blog that I put up a few weeks ago.  An out-of-town REALTOR  was showing property to a family who lived in another state.  The family found pictures of my listing on realtor.com, asked him to preview it for them, made an offer from his previewing, and it closed yesterday!!  They checked it out personally just days before closing.  This house is also one that I spent two hours  trying to make it show better through staging.  The staging would have made the house show better in the pictures.  I call it depersonalizing the house.
Each year when it comes … (77 comments)

barbara s duncan searcy ar: Skunk hunt. Day # 3. VICTORY. - 11/27/08 03:08 AM

Today is Thanksgiving and I'm thankful for so many things including being free of the skunk who lived near our house.  It all started with our feeding a few little foxes.
We have trapped two possums (as recorded in the last two blogs) and the third night we captured the lovely little skunk.  He couldn't resist the smell of good food in a trap and evidently he didn't remember the agony of the possums last two nights and he gave in to his greed....or hunger.
It is truly amazing that such beautiful animals can smell so bad.  It was also interesting … (15 comments)
