depots: The small building that was in the shadow of a magnificent depot in Searcy Arkansas. - 09/06/10 08:38 AM
This little building has always had charm and just didn't seem to fit.  Now I know why.  It's old!  It has been a dentist office at the end of Spring Street across from Spring Park and across from First Baptist and a block away from The Mayflower Hotel.  Here's the way it looks today.

And here's the way it looked a long time ago.  It sat in the shadow of the magnificent depot.  A railroad came right up close to Spring Park and Mayflower Hotel.

Here's another view showing the big depot in more detail.  Finding these pictures and … (8 comments)

depots: Letters, letters, I get letters.....and I like getting the letters. - 06/28/10 09:19 PM

One thing about a blog is that it stays out there in internet land for a long long time.  We may forget it but someone else is finding it and finding it interesting.  Such is the case with my Beebe Arkansas depot blog.  I just received this inquiry.
Dear Barbara,
I just recently purchased an old desk from the flea market that now occupies the Beebe Depot.  They told me this desk came with the depot. They had no idea how long it had been there but I did do some research on the company that made it and they had … (14 comments)

depots: Letona Arkansas depot with our favorite Corrine Hart waiting there. - 11/02/09 08:41 PM
The White County Historical Society has a collection of pictures on its website and they've said we can share them.  Here's a great one of the train depot in Letona, Arkansas.
Letona is about 15 miles from Searcy and has 215 residents at this time.
We're exploring how the trains went to every little town and below is a picture of the Letona depot.  But first we we found this picture of a young woman named Corrine Harrison Hart at about 1924 sitting at the depot.  Corrine is Anita's mother.   Anita is a contributor to this blog.  Anita, do you think the man … (12 comments)

depots: A depot found in New Augusta, Arkansas. Is that Augusta Arkansas? - 10/29/09 08:50 PM
My blog on West Point Arkansas aroused a little interest in old depots in the tiniest towns.  I found a couple more photos of trains and depots.

Here's the Augusta depot, or so it was labeled.  It looks  as if it is saying New Augusta.  Now was that  a name for Augusta?  Augusta is actually in Woodruff County and was once a thriving town.  Was it called New Augusta.
I did a Google search for New Augusta AR and it pulled up what we know as Augusta.  We may have another mystery here.  I have never ever heard Augusta … (16 comments)

depots: Georgetown, Arkansas. You've gotta be going there because you can't drive by! - 10/22/09 07:15 AM
Georgetown Arkansas in White County is the oldest continuously settled area in Arkansas, according to Wikipedia.  It was settled in 1789 and overlooks the White River.  As of the census in 2000 there were 126 folks who lived there.  There were 55 households and 33 families.
Now, more down to earth into.....when I taught school I had a few West Point kids in class and they rode a bus to school.  When we had flood weather, the road to Georgetown became completely covered in water.  If the kids got to school they had to come on a boat or get outa … (27 comments)

depots: MN&A, DK&S? Old Railroad Depot in Searcy AR. Another one. - 08/09/08 08:02 AM

Our continuing saga about railroad depots.....here's another one.  This photo was taken by Paula in her Girl Scouts' project about photography.  That was in the 40's.  I mistakenly said it was a 4H project earlier but I've been corrected.  Paula went around old Searcy snapping photos of buildings and businesses and those photos have almost made her a new Disfarmer.  (Look him up if you've never heard of him. He was an eccentric photographer in Heber Springs and is worth a blog all by himself. His photos now sell for thousands.)
I need someone in Searcy-land to tell me which railroad … (30 comments)

depots: Railroad station in Searcy Arkansas - 08/06/08 07:22 AM

A day or two ago we put up a picture of the bus stopping in Searcy AR for passengers to board, alight, or have a rest stop.  Lots of us boarded buses to get around.
Here's an old picture of the train depot in Searcy AR.  I think it may be here still but turned into a business location.  Native Searcians may have to tell me.
I hope some people can enlighten us on riding a train because my one experience with train riding was a nightmare.  I was traveling from Arkansas to Georgia and it must have been in … (20 comments)
