homes for sale: Old rock houses and more creativity in Searcy Arkansas. - 06/21/12 11:02 AM
We found another charming old rock house in Searcy.  It needs repairs but still has potential and you know how we have bragged about these things before.  We have featured them several times.  Here goes again.

That is the basic look but lets go up closer for the creativity that shows through.  The grout has had added "bling."

That bling is pretty unusual but look at what I found in the closeup!  7Up!!

The rock artist went one step further in being creative with these kitchen windows.  He curved them and definitely it would have been easier to … (19 comments)

homes for sale: Simpson, Simpson, Collier and Brock. Searcy AR attorneys hold open house. - 04/26/12 11:43 PM

This is the old view of Headlee's Drug Store which was located in downtown Searcy Arkansas.

This is another view of the building.

This is the look of the building today.  Simpson, Simpson, Collier and Brock, Searcy attorneys, held an open house which I dropped in on.  It was impressive to see how they have expanded from the large building on the corner to the one adjoining.  They will probably do more to the exterior but the inside is finished out beautifully.

Curious?  Here they are.  From the left, Collier, Simpson, Brock and Simpson.  … (30 comments)

homes for sale: What's an airplane bungalow? Google search spells it out and Searcy has an example. - 11/20/11 12:47 AM
Dorothy Warden, our historical oracle supreme, does a column in the Searcy Daily Citizen each Saturday and she  mentioned in one of her columns an airplane bungalow at the corner of Fir and Center Streets.
I hustled over to that street and saw nothing that looked like an airplane.  Sleuth Anita googled it and found this description of the house style.
The Airplane Bungalow style dates from the early 1900s and becamevery popular in Los Angeles in the mid-teens.
The Airplane Bungalow is a residential style that grew out of theCraftsman movement. The Craftsman movement grew out of theEnglish Arts and … (20 comments)

homes for sale: In memory of Mom & Pop grocery stores everywhere. Where was this one? Judsonia AR - 01/05/11 12:45 PM
Blogging makes you sit up and take notice.  And if you have a camera you may sit up, take notice and snap a picture.
 As I did today.

My White County Sleuths haven't had a puzzle in a few weeks so let's see if they can tell me where this is.  It has been around for a long time, no doubt about that.  I've always thought this was a charming little old grocery store.  When it closed down, I don't know, but the building and the signs are still there.
So, Searcy Sleuths, can you locate this one?

homes for sale: Here's what activerain has done for me. I appreciate old filling stations now! - 09/10/10 07:07 AM

Did you see the old guys sitting on this porch chatting and watching the people walk by?  The next one had some sitters too.

Can you see the last time this tank was used?  The old guys sitting on the bench under the porch knew everyone who came by to fill up their tank.  They also knew the guy who came out and asked, "Filler up?"
A recent trip to Pangburn Arkansas from Searcy Arkansas actually had me looking for old filling stations.  I've driven by these things dozens of times but this time I pulled over and … (17 comments)

Stopping at my favorite seafood shop in Bald Knob Arkansas, I saw this truck in the parking lot.  Being an old Art teacher I asked if the decor was permanent.  They replied, "You bet!"
So I asked for a photo.  You know how our simple little blogging minds now think.  They posed readily and handed me … (11 comments)

homes for sale: Reliving past glories. I guess there's nothing wrong with it. The tomato king is trying again. - 04/12/10 02:06 PM

Does he ever look happy!  He grew these tomatoes.  I don't remember the exact year and I don't know whether we ate them because he's holding onto them for dear life.  He tried last year to achieve this feat again and failed.  We poked fun at him.
This year it is time to try again.  He's growing tomatoes in Searcy Arkansas but his plan is to get out of that vacant lot where the deer (@#$!%!@# deer as he calls them) ate all his tomatoes before we could get them mature on the vine.  In fact the deer ate … (15 comments)

homes for sale: They're giving away magazine subscriptions. Have you noticed? - 11/26/09 08:54 AM
Magazines are neat to have arrive at your front door.
I get some that I don't really like, especially the hubby's golf ones!
I used to like the "perfect homemaker" type.  You know, they'll tell you how to have a better house and a better garden.  Personally, I'm more interested now in financing, history, etc.   But one of the older ones that I'd subscribed to for two years because it was SO cheap went out of business and they finished the subscription with another magazine.
That one has come up for renewal.  I don't want it.  I don't like it.  I … (13 comments)

homes for sale: A four-chimney house? That must have been a real luxury in old Searcy Arkansas. - 10/16/09 12:50 AM
This historic house is barely on the East side of Searcy on a corner lot with huge trees.  So many trees, in fact, that pictures are difficult.  I believe it is called the Margaret Pope house.  Correct me, Searcy readers, if I'm wrong.
I drive by it daily and wonder why it didn't sell a few years back when listed for close to $80,000.  It has been through a lot, however, in the years since it exited the Pope estate.
The Pope estate had a big sale.  My friends attended even though I was working and couldn't.  They bought the mirror that … (24 comments)

homes for sale: Jim's Dining Car from old Searcy Arkansas - 12/28/08 08:29 AM

Here's another great picture of old Searcy Arkansas.  I've never seen this picture before and had no idea that there was once a converted railroad car located at the corner of West Race and Pine Streets.  This picture was sent to me by Don Thompson who says he loved eating there because they had the very best BBQ sandwiches and pecan pie.
Don also says that one of the ladies at the entrance is Anita Fuller's mother, Corrine Hart.  Don and Anita are frequent contributors to this blog!  Thanks to both of you.  Now hopefully, we can get a little more … (20 comments)

homes for sale: Pickled eggs for Christmas? Do you think that is equal to a lump of coal? - 12/26/08 06:16 AM

I've heard of pickled eggs.
I don't remember ever getting any for Christmas until now and I hope they are not for punishment like St. Nick's putting coal in your stocking.
You usually hear about pickled eggs that are in a big jar on the bar at some honky-tonk and when you get hungry you just buy one of those eggs rather than quit drinking and go home.  I thought they were a thing of the past and read that "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book," the red-and-white plaid standard for home cooks, has dropped the recipe for pickled eggs from its pages.
But all … (30 comments)
