houses for sale: 1890 Built Kerr-Booth house in Searcy AR - 01/06/16 03:13 AM

The past is all here.  Including the friendly cat waiting beside the front door.  Take a look at this front door.  Notice the lovely wood with the beveled glass panes.
The house was built in 1890 as a Queen Ann Victorian.  It has had some changes but not enough to make it lose its historic value and charm.  It was occupied for over 70 years by members of the same family and had changes made in 1925 and in the 1970's.  Today we REALTORS toured it (Yes, it is for sale.) and saw lots of the lovely original features such as … (3 comments)

houses for sale: It must have been a custom built house.....back in 1964. Why else would it have pink? - 08/01/13 11:35 AM
In all my 30 plus years in real estate I have not seen a wall oven like this.
I tried to figure out how to open it.  You grab hold handles with both hands and Presto!  It opens.

Did I mention that it is pink?  I can't imagine a spec house having a pink oven or a pink stovetop. So my thinking is that this was a custom built house in 1964 and it still has the original appliances.  I'd be willing to bet that those cabinets are knotty pine painted over!  And the white does match the pink … (18 comments)

houses for sale: Leaving Las Vegas. What a tattoo! - 02/28/13 10:32 PM

Daughter and I have been to Las Vegas to the international RE/MAX convention where over 8000 real estate agents had gathered.  It is always inspirational and educational.
We'd just got on the shuttle to get to the airport and there was a guy sitting on the front seat with his shirt sleeve held up to keep from damaging (and causing him pain) a brand new tattoo.
Being an old art teacher, I couldn't help remarking, "What a beautiful tattoo!"  That made him smile and we were able to learn a little more about the tattoo.  He and his wife had … (10 comments)

houses for sale: Police Chief Dick Hart on horseback in downtown Searcy AR long ago. - 02/20/13 06:41 AM
Here's another great picture from historic Searcy Arkansas.  Correct me if I am guessing wrong but I think this would have been Arch Street downtown.  The vehicle can be a good approximate date.
Perhaps it was at the White County Fair Parade when so many people ride horses.  Or might we have had a mounted patrol?  Note the parking meters that have been gone for a long time.

Our new blog friend, Bridget Hart, loaned us this picture.  Dick Hart, Police Chief, was her father-in-law.
Thanks, Bridget.

houses for sale: Sophomore Class Searcy High School, AR. Teacher Lois Thornton. Thanks Don Thompson. - 12/10/12 08:44 AM

Blog buddy Don Thompson bought an old yearbook from ebay that shows the classes in Searcy AR in 1920.  This one is of the Sophomore Class and gives the class roll.  What was significant to him was that one of these lovely young women, second from left middle row, was Lois Thornton who because his teacher at Searcy High when he was a student many years later.  The name of the yearbook was The Reveille.  Somewhere, sometime later it became the Lion.
Here's the closeup of Lois.  She influenced many student's lives.

houses for sale: Black Cat Found!! Our blog has had a response and we know more about Word's Grocery and Bakery in Searcy AR. - 11/06/12 12:24 AM
Below is the blog that I put up just a few days ago.
No one seemed to know the meaning of the black cat.  But a call from Benson Robbins, Searcy scion, gave me the information we lacked.  His grandfather was a partner with Mr. Word and they owned the store. It was the grandfather on his mother's side....Benson.  They used the black cat as a logo because of the fact that "a black cat always returns" just as they wanted their customers to do.  He has the black cat that sat at the store.  Here he still lives. Benson said … (10 comments)

houses for sale: Searcy Wholesale Grocer Co, Searcy Arkansas. Where was this located? - 10/16/12 10:00 AM
More ads from the old Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book.  Notice I made a change which I had not noticed before.  It is NOT Women's but Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book.
This ad is for Searcy Wholesale Grocer Co. and they ran two ads on the same page!  One is for shortening and the other for flour.  I looked at a few past blogs and did not find this particular store.  Perhaps the sleuths will locate.

houses for sale: A. B. Coffman,W.L. Ragsdale,Searcy Arkansas business owners a long time ago. - 10/12/12 12:44 AM

Here are two more ads from the Women's Missionary Society Cook Book that we think may date back to the 20's in Searcy Arkansas.
Read about the handmade clothes.  What's a bushelman?  What is Glover continuous flow?
At least we have the location of one of the businesses.  600 South Spring Street, Searcy AR.  I tried to find what is at 600 S Spring now and was unsuccessful.  Don can do it!
Just for Ms Debbie, I left a recipe on the page.  That is the entire recipe, not just a part of it.  Sounds pretty easy.

houses for sale: Truman Baker Chevrolet Co Searcy AR old post card. Phone # 650. - 10/06/12 04:20 AM
It does not seem to have been so long ago that we viewed this site each time we drove on E Race Street in Searcy AR.  But it is gone now.  Now it is the site of a big Walgreen's Drug Store.  Those of you who grew up in Searcy will have lots of memories of this old Armory building.  I think that is what you called it.  You'll need to verify.
This card is for sale right now on ebay.  If you want to add it to your inventory, go check it out.

houses for sale: Three faces of 219 Market St., Searcy AR. Historic downtown building. - 08/02/12 10:04 PM
219 Market Street in Searcy Arkansas sold a few months ago.
It sold to the folks who own Salon Bliss and Boutique and they have made it beautiful.  I like the fact that they appreciate history and have actually saved a building from Searcy's past and made it the location of a successful business location again.
So it is time for a review.  First is a picture taken in by Paula Windsor when she was a child and assigned a photography project.  She took lots of downtown pictures and we have had them on this blog.

Next we have … (8 comments)

houses for sale: G B Farris Transportation May 9 1908 in Judsonia Arkansas. - 07/30/12 10:10 PM
James Whitlow has sent us another picture for this blog.  It is one that I have never seen and indicates that in 1908 a Mr. Farris had a transportation company.  Perhaps he transported folks up or down river by boat?  Or he transported freight.  Writing on the front says it is in Judsonia ARK.  Thanks, James.
Wonder where this was in Judsonia?

houses for sale: One happy hubby with lots of tomatoes.....home grown...by him! - 07/25/12 11:02 AM
I'm guilty!
I confess!  I did it!
I poked fun at my husband's tomato-growing prowess in past blogs.
The laugh is on me.  LOOK!

He was SO successful this year with tomato growing that his friends run in the other direction when he starts toward them with another bag of tomatoes to give them.  He had to leave our little backyard to grow them.  He begged a row from his friend who has a horse in the perimeter so that the horse may have scared off the @#$%^ deer (his usual description of them) and may have also provided a … (10 comments)

houses for sale: Braggart! Crepe Myrtles in Searcy AR are bragging to the extreme. - 07/08/12 10:48 AM
Walking down the road for an early morning exercise session can be boring but I couldn't help being amazed at the bragging ability of some of the trees and flowers.
Take those Crepe Myrtles.  It appears that they are just bragging and bragging.  Everything around them, including people, are gasping and complaining about the 110+ temperatures that we've been having in Searcy Arkansas.
So what do they do?  They just bloom their hearts out......bragging about their love of hot weather and their ability to survive.
LOOK AT THIS TREE!  As I walk toward it, jt just gloats!

houses for sale: Pershing filling station in Searcy AR.....closeup views from ebay buyer. - 07/02/12 10:14 PM
Folks are so nice to us on this blog.  The buyer of the card that was on ebay a few days ago has sent us closeups of the two people who were shown on the card at the filling station.  Review the blog first if you'd like.

Here's the gentleman who was in front.

And here is the gentleman who was on the side.
The buyer of this card has gone out of his way to send us these pictures!  I hope we can see them well enough now for some of the Sleuths to identify them.

houses for sale: Pershing filling station in Searcy AR.....another view from ebay. - 06/18/12 06:22 AM
We've had pictures of the evidently very popular Pershing filling station on this blog before.  In fact, we have had it on two times.  Check this blog and this blog for other pictures.
The station has cropped up on ebay and I made a bid or two but it has several interested bidders and I have lost out. But here is the picture on ebay.

I wish we knew who the gents were who were standing around gazing at the camera.  It was a nice brick building!

houses for sale: The biggest private house in the world now finished and occupied. India. - 06/05/12 04:59 AM

I wrote a blog about the largest private house in the world on May 8, 2008 and it has received 217,063 clicks by June 4 2012. I was looking through my current issue of Vanity Fair and it has a long article about the family who lives in the house.  Nita Ambani and husband Mukesh and their three children now occupy the house in Mumbai India and the article has photos of the gracious Nita and some of the house.  I don't know how long the article will be up but right now it is here.
And here is the … (6 comments)

houses for sale: That was quite a swat! Tree limb attacks chimney at Searcy AR Market Street house. - 05/17/12 10:26 AM
A drive to work a few days ago was interrupted by this disturbing site.

Heavy winds early in the morning had broken the limb off a tree and the limb had fallen and taken a big swat at the chimney of this beautiful old home on Market Street in Searcy AR.  Sleuths may remember it as the old Methodist Church parsonage.  That is what it was when I first came to town.  I hope they repair the chimney because it stood high and proud and we don't see many chimneys built on new houses anymore.

Tree is now gone.  … (10 comments)

houses for sale: Anita "Tart" Hart Fuller is liable to show up anytime....anywhere! - 05/12/12 03:41 AM
We call her Anita Tart Hart Fuller because she has a sharp tongue and it rhymes with Hart, her maiden name.
She just tartly chews us out when we do it and still loves and forgives us.
She was the happiest and most blessed child in Searcy Arkansas as she grew up.
She has been on many blogs on this blogsite and she comments on most of the blogs that I do.  She lets me know if I've made a mistake.  She helps find out the answers to hard questions about old Searcy AR.  She has supplied lots of photos for this … (25 comments)

houses for sale: When Kroger was in downtown Searcy AR...on Spring Street. - 05/09/12 03:56 AM

While touring Pioneer Village in Searcy AR I saw this picture hanging in the old depot building.  I remembered that no one seemed to be able to remember when the Krogers store was in downtown Searcy on Spring Street.  The picture says it was on Spring Street and it names the people in the picture.  Here's a bigger view of the tag.
Left to right, Marshall Watson, employee, Jesse Byrd, manager, Tommy Byrd, employee and Ed Coward, customer.  Ed looks as if he is floating in air but it is the reflections from the surroundings that give that appearance.  It's … (18 comments)

houses for sale: Knocked out with the color found on this turkey...Pioneer Village Searcy AR open house. - 05/06/12 06:51 AM
Seeing this turkey strutting around with all this color reminded me of the song that says, "Just because you think you're so pretty.  Just because you think you're so hot.  Just because you think you've got something that no body else has got."
This turkey DOES have something no one else has.....the most beautiful mixture of colors in a head that I have ever seen.  He deserves a strut.  Look at him!  He was on display this afternoon at the White County Pioneer Village open house.

And I've never been this close to a sheep.  He needed his wool removed … (10 comments)
