judsonia tornado: Funeral home in Searcy Arkansas on Market Street......the first one? Marian Daniel Ingram reports. - 10/26/10 10:17 PM

Marian Daniel Ingram responded to our earlier blog about funeral homes.  I loved her email and the picture that she sent.  Here goes....
This picture is the first Daniel Funeral Home which was on Market Street where a telephone company is located.  Rudolph Chandler had a funeral home there before we bought it around 1944 or 1945.
We lived upstairs and had a roomy 3 bedroom space with stairs in the front and back.  We had the funeral business, ambulance service, monument company plus burial insurance. (Pretty busy place, especially when the tornado hit Judsonia and we had 24 deceased people who … (22 comments)

judsonia tornado: The most vivid memory from a tornado survivor, exclusive to ActiveRain. A must read! - 09/28/08 09:05 AM

I wrote a blog about the deadly tornado that destroyed Judsonia Arkansas in 1952.  I received email from a lady who survived that tornado.  At the time of the blog she was battling water in her basement from a flood where she now lives.  But she promised to write down her memories of the tornado and get them to me.  Yesterday she did that.  This is the most vivid story of a survivor.  I left it as she wrote it and if you don't have time to read it right now, bookmark it and come back because it's … (19 comments)

judsonia tornado: Mansion in Judsonia that survived the 1952 tornado - 08/29/08 07:34 AM

I blogged a few weeks ago about the vicious tornado that killed so many people in Judsonia Arkansas and left fear in the hearts of all survivors.  I had to go to Judsonia this week and because of blogging interest decided to drive by and see the mansion that survived the tornado.  I'm posting the picture of that mansion and again posting the picture that shows it after the tornado.  The tornado was in 1952.
It had quite a few flaws but it still looks pretty grand, doesn't it.

judsonia tornado: 1952 Judsonia AR tornado damages and survival of a mansion. - 07/03/08 07:08 AM

Two days ago I wrote about Judsonia AR, White County, and how in 1952 it was almost wiped out by a vicious tornado. Over 50 people were killed and the town never recovered.  The ones who lived through it and even the ones who were miles away came away with fear that never subsides.
This photo is one that shows damages on a block or two.  Strangely enough the mansion at the back of the photo made it through.  The house at the back right also survived enough to be livable.  In fact, at one point in the … (30 comments)

judsonia tornado: Judsonia AR. Dirt streets photo. - 07/01/08 07:33 PM

Judsonia Arkansas was a thriving little town in 1952.  This shows a picture of the streets much earlier than 1952 when they were dirt.  I love seeing the old town photos.  Judsonia is just about 5 miles from Searcy, our city of 20,000.
The saddest thing about Judsonia is that in 1952 a tornado came through and wiped the town out almost.  About 50+ people were killed.  The reports say that you couldn't tell where streets were because the damage was so bad.  It was a terrible thing.
Now if you are selling property in Judsonia you'll find a storm … (11 comments)

judsonia tornado: An exciting or scary night at Searcy Country Club - 05/10/08 09:25 PM
Our friends and we were gathered at the Searcy Country Club tonight anticipating a great meal and fellowship.  The storm warnings were out.  Tornado warnings again!!  Oh my God, there went the siren from 1/2 block away saying take cover.  We had just ordered our dinners.
The safest place seemed to be the ladies lounge.  We all headed in there, cooks, waitresses, the manager, the guys.  One lady, I kid you not, had just chowed down on her Tilapia meal and she took it with her.  She had to suffer a lot of teasing and we also stole bites off her … (9 comments)
