old buildings: Look around. You'll see lots of these little offices, some still used. Old car lots. - 02/21/12 02:05 PM
This little building on Hwy 31 South in Beebe Arkansas stands out as you drive by because it is still labeled as the location for a car lot. It is showing drastic age blemishes but it sure can bring back memories. There were lots of these little frame buildings and not just for car lots. We have one from Noble's Motel in Searcy AR. Here's another one that lurks along Main Street. All of these memories made me want to post this old family picture. Sleuths will identify the people in the photo if they know them. But

old buildings: Downtown Judsonia Arkansas was not lucky during the 1952 tornado. - 08/23/11 06:31 PM
The last blog was about the mansion in Judsonia that stood strongly through the 1952 Judsonia AR tornado. Driving through downtown Judsonia will show you some buildings that didn't make it very well but still stand. This one could be turned into an abstract painting because it has so much muted color and fascinating details. Take a look. Can't you just visualize it when it was a store or a movie house or a gathering place of some kind? Here's the side view. And for our artistic closeup, study this one. I lowered the resolution for this blog but in high

old buildings: A new look on East Race Street to an old building in Searcy AR. - 05/23/11 08:13 PM
This building was so old and the real estate company that had been there had closed. We no longer have a Century 21 in Searcy Arkansas. I really thought the building would be torn down. The picture below looks good (made by the google man) but after the real estate company closed it went down further and further. Too bad I didn't take a picture just before it sold and started a new life. Now when you drive by you see this magnificent front. It is impressive to see what the new owners have done. I'm not sure I like

old buildings: Parade in Searcy Arkansas. Queen on float and old buildings downtown. - 04/21/11 08:19 PM
Perhaps I'm stuck on parades! Perhaps you are tired of them but here's another one. Searcy Sleuths should be able to name this girl and the approximate time of the parade. What I like best are the buildings in the background. Searcy Bank , Headlee's Rexall, and some that are not readable but still in the memories of the Sleuths. Isn't the Dr. Pepper sign where we now find Sowell's Furniture? A word about the girl's fur coat! They used to be the thing to wear and now you might be ridiculed if you went out in public in one. She

old buildings: Race Street revisited. Searcy AR Sleuths....recognize this one? - 10/10/10 09:58 PM
I always liked this building. This picture comes from an old Searcy High School annual, year not remembered. Knowing how the Searcy Sleuths get bored and desire a challenge I'm not going to tell where it is or where it was and see if you can tell me. So you tell me if you remember it?

old buildings: Twin tins? Bet you never noticed and neither did I.....South Oak St., Searcy Arkansas - 09/29/10 08:03 PM
I have driven by these two places almost every day for too many years to count. Wilson's Feed Store operates successfully every year and sells seeds and plants. It's a tin building. How many tin buildings do you see today? Last week I noticed another tin building across the street (Pleasure St) from this one. It is also tin and not used very much anymore. Look at the two. They look like twins! They also probably date back to railroad days and were on separate sides of the tracks. That is the Google image. Now here's the Google image of Wilson's

old buildings: Here's what activerain has done for me. I appreciate old filling stations now! - 09/10/10 02:07 PM
Did you see the old guys sitting on this porch chatting and watching the people walk by? The next one had some sitters too. Can you see the last time this tank was used? The old guys sitting on the bench under the porch knew everyone who came by to fill up their tank. They also knew the guy who came out and asked, "Filler up?" A recent trip to Pangburn Arkansas from Searcy Arkansas actually had me looking for old filling stations. I've driven by these things dozens of times but this time I pulled over and

old buildings: The small building that was in the shadow of a magnificent depot in Searcy Arkansas. - 09/06/10 08:38 AM
This little building has always had charm and just didn't seem to fit. Now I know why. It's old! It has been a dentist office at the end of Spring Street across from Spring Park and across from First Baptist and a block away from The Mayflower Hotel. Here's the way it looks today. And here's the way it looked a long time ago. It sat in the shadow of the magnificent depot. A railroad came right up close to Spring Park and Mayflower Hotel. Here's another view showing the big depot in more detail. Finding these pictures and

old buildings: Searcy Junior High School Old Aerial View. A glimpse of history of Searcy Arkansas. - 08/15/10 12:58 PM
The phone rang sometime in the 70's, I believe, and I can't find the exact date. But.... A friend said, "I hear that the Junior High School building is burning!" Looking outside, we could see the smoke and blazes because we didn't live far away. It was a very sad day for Searcy Arkanasas to see the beautiful old brick school building ruined. Two of our kids were still in Junior High so it really was devastating to them. Cliff Emfinger, who had attended that school, sent me this wonderful photograph showing an aerial view of the school area. It's worth

old buildings: This card is 100 years old! The Methodist Church pictured in Searcy Arkansas is even older. - 08/12/10 08:59 PM
Found on ebay! This old card is great and shows two churches in Searcy Arkansas in approximately 1909 when the card was postmarked. The First Methodist Church on the right has been cherished, pampered, and its historical value perpetuated. Alas, the one on the left, assumed by me to be First Baptist Church, has been torn down and a new church built. First Methodist, I believe, dates back to somewhere around 1875 and is located at 304 N Main Street. Perhaps my historians will finish the dates for me. First Methodist has added on, spread out, and grown but has always kept

old buildings: Sold. Kelso Purina building in Searcy Arkansas. Soon to be no more so admire it now. - 08/05/10 09:22 PM
The MLS gives this building a SOLD designation. It says Kelso and I'm throwing in the Purina name because isn't that the Purina ghost sign. This is, soon to be was, located at 515 S Main. Now Beebe Capps is so near it that the walls shiver as traffic whizzes by. One of the busiest McDonald's in the country is across the street. The street to the North of it has been given permission to close so that additional land is available for construction. This building was constructed reportedly in 1943 and has been on the market for sale for

old buildings: What did all the little chimneys on these buildings contribute? Help wanted. - 11/10/09 08:48 PM
Driving through old Searcy Arkansas, which is being restored and revived, I notice the tall old buildings with the little chimneys on the side. Nearly always the building is taller in the front and slants down toward the back and these little chimneys are at intervals. This old building has been restored with an architectural firm and a law firm having done the makeover. The brick squares above the store fronts look almost like they could have been ventilation. Then we have the two rounded filled-in brick spots on the side. Explain away if you can. The one on the

old buildings: Searcy Arkansas has an impressive historic Court House that we love! - 09/27/08 08:42 AM
Searcy Arkansas, White County, has one of the oldest court houses in the state. It is a beehive of activity everyday despite how old it is. I'm posting three photos of the building. The one above is the earliest known photo shortly after its construction in 1870. It later had wings added on the North and South sides. This one is by our famous photographer, Paula, who did her Girl Scout duty in the 40's and took pictures all around the town. Note it now has attractive wings added. This one was probably made in the 40's also because we

old buildings: Still standing and still lovely! Old Searcy AR post office on Arch Street. - 09/17/08 09:21 AM
This old building dates back to WWI, according to Dr. Ray Muncy's book called "Searcy Arkansas, A Frontier Town Grows Up With America." He reports that the Federal Government gave approval for this building as a Post Office when post office buildings were rare in small towns. Most communities with a population of less than 3000 at that time picked up their mail at a cage in the corner of a merchandise establishment, said Muncy. It still occupies a place of importance on Arch Street just about a block from downtown Searcy AR, White County. I really feel proud of this

old buildings: Higginson Arkansas High School in the 1930's. - 08/16/08 04:55 PM
We've been exploring old photos of Searcy Arkansas and its surrounding cities. Higginson is just a breath away and was once a thriving city with trains going through it all the time. Trains still go through it and my friend Ludean told me that they have two fire stations to make sure the fires can be fought on either side of town if a train has traffic stopped. This photo is loaned to me by the Higginson mayor through Ludean. It shows the high school in the 1930's. The children now go to Searcy schools and I don't know how

old buildings: Cumberland Presbyterian Church 1900 view Searcy Arkansas - 08/14/08 09:03 AM
Searcy has lots of churches. Some have been added on to become almost not recognizable. Some were torn down and rebuilt. Some were torn down and replaced with commercial. This church is located right across the street from our historic Rialto Theater. Traffic passes by continuously night and day because the street has become so busy. The church on the outside is largely unchanged and without all the grown landscaping you can see the real structure of it. That's why I like the old photos. Inside I don't know of the amount of changes but it is a pleasure to

old buildings: Mayfair Hotel in Searcy Arkansas White County - 07/20/08 06:23 PM
This old hotel is still in Searcy AR and still being lived in. I don't believe it is a hotel anymore but more of a permanent home for people and office space for businesses. It is within walking distance to our Spring Park, where people used to go for herbal water treatments. We had a delightful "Yankee" who came in and bought it many years ago. He made himself a very fancy living area in the hotel. He became loved by everyone in the town despite his accent. When he sold it to someone else he had quite a few collectibles
