old cars: Parade Searcy AR. Legion Hut Court House Old vehicles Brick streets - 08/30/21 11:48 AM

Shriner's Parade in 1940's
This is a great old picture from the 40's and loaned to me by Sherry Quattlebaum Person, whose father saved lots of historic documents.  If it were larger the detail would show much better.  You could read J. D. Phillips & Son on the store in the background.  Beside it is the Silver Dining Car.  Then we have the American Legion Hut which has been in the news lately because it is being revived with a new roof and other repairs.  The Legion Hut was built in 1939 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in … (4 comments)

old cars: Chrysler Newport 1976 model. Car dealers in Searcy AR. - 05/14/15 11:35 PM

New cars!
Who does not love one?
This old picture is labeled on the back and that's the reason I know what year and model it was.  The people in the picture are never forgotten.  This photo was probably made for a Searcy AR High School yearbook.  Car dealers were always called on to do a nice ad for the yearbooks and if they had kids in the class they did so proudly.  Custom even started dictating that the students show up in the picture.
This picture shows a master salesman and his son.  He was called Po Dunc (Vernon Duncan) and sold cars … (6 comments)

old cars: Hospital with parking lot that is not crowded. - 01/07/15 08:34 AM

Back of the picture says "hospital" and that is all.  Looks sad and depressing to me and makes me wonder how far it was to walk to the hospital from what must have been the parking lot.  The sign says "Visitors park and enter here."
Someone will know what this vehicle is and what the model was.  The license plate has a readable number but no state identification that is readable.  Perhaps a reader may know where this hospital was.  You have to admit it is an interesting picture from a long time ago.

old cars: Searcy Sleuths! Challenge.....who is this and where was he? Dick Hart. Searcy AR a long time ago. - 11/21/13 09:33 PM
A Super Sleuth from Searcy AR dialed my phone yesterday!
HA!  Dialed?  We have forgotten what the word means.
Buy, anyway, my phone rang and she demanded my response as to why we have had no blogs lately about her dear old town of Searcy.  I told it like it was.  I have been SO busy selling real estate and my sources of old photos has dried up and I thought that facebook has taken over the need for blogs.
She disagreed and so I found another picture to put up.  Before telling who this is, I think the Sleuths need … (21 comments)

old cars: 1944 black and white photo of White County Court House. Nice old cars, too! - 08/27/13 05:44 AM

This is a nice old post card showing the White County Court House in Searcy AR.  It was posted 1944 and had this writing on the back.
"Dearest, Been thinking of you even if I have not had time to express it.  Meeting old friends and going places has occupied my first wk.  Believe I told you about my sister Mrs. Yarnell falling down her front porch steps in early fall.  She is about over it & is looking young and pretty like you do.  Love, Jessie Ponder."
It is addressed to  Mrs. Susie Sheldon, Kansas City (3) Mo.  Lucern … (15 comments)

old cars: Men in overcoats. Men in overcoats are SO handsome. Searcy AR historic blog. - 09/13/11 02:20 PM
I really have nagged my husband through the years.  He'd get up to go to work and from the hips up he'd be covered with so many clothes he couldn't possibly get cold.  Gloves, hat, three layers of coats.        BUT....from the hips down, he'd have on a single pair of bluejeans.
"Honey,"  I'd say, "Why don't you wear an overcoat?  It would keep you warm all over...?"
He'd make some remark like, "Real men don't wear overcoats.  Or Southern guys don't wear overcoats.  Or why don't you just leave me alone!"  Then he'd slam the door and leave.
This old picture … (9 comments)

old cars: Old Searcy Arkansas. West and North sides of the square. - 04/10/11 02:03 AM
What great pictures of Searcy Arkansas.  I stumbled across these today and can't remember where I got them but they are so clear.  There's a parade going on with people standing there watching.  Notice no pants on the ladies.  I remember my mom thinking ladies should always wear dresses.  The car covered in checkers must mean something.  Wonder what?
Of interest also is that Cafe sign on a rock building.  The other rock building is still there but what happened to the cafe rock building.  The Rialto didn't have a big marquee.  I love being able to turn the corner and … (37 comments)

old cars: Girls and cars....everyone posed in front of or beside a car.. - 04/06/11 04:07 PM

This is a great picture of both girls and cars. So many people posed with their cars in the old days.  The girl on the right is Wyndelene Holmes Duncan.  Perhaps the Searcy Sleuths can name the person on the left.  I'm trying to decide whether the girls had on nylon stockings or were they bare legged.  My bet is that they had on hose.  Here's another picture of the same car and girl.

This picture was taken at the very end of West McRae Street with the view of what is now Headlee Heights in the background.  The ladies … (25 comments)

old cars: Men love their cars!! Is this location in old Searcy Arkansas? 1950 Mercury. - 03/18/11 02:46 PM
Isn't this a great picture of a proud young man and his car?  Seems as if everyone in the old days wanted the picture snapped beside their vehicle.
This handsome guy was my husband's Uncle Roland Duncan, who died early, and it looks as if this would have been taken from a street in Searcy Arkansas but I can't pinpoint the street.  I also can't name the vehicle but it's a beauty.  What did you call those things that fit over the tires and were they just for beauty or did they serve a purpose?  Also note where the door handles are on … (15 comments)

old cars: Before Wal-Mart in Searcy Arkansas there was Magic Mart! A look back..... - 09/04/10 03:01 PM
We forget.  We forget some of the great stores that we used to have in our town.  I remember Magic Mart but my memory is sorta vague.  Here's a great shot taken from an old high school annual ad that shows it at 3003 East Race Street in Searcy Arkansas. What came before Magic Mart?  What came after Magic Mart?  Some of our historians may remember and give us the history.  Some of our car experts can probably also date this photo by the vehicles in the front.

old cars: A new car on a street in Searcy Arkansas. At least I think it was Searcy. - 02/14/10 11:25 PM
I have recovered slides.  My friend Larry DeGroat loaned me his device for taking old slides which no one ever looks at anymore and putting the image on the computer.  With me it was almost like the "Lost Years" recovered because the slides had not been viewed in probably 40 years or longer.
I especially like these two.  The guy may be recognizable to some of you in Searcy.  If so, let me know.  The car had to be his pride and was perhaps the reason for the photo.  I'm also wondering if anyone recognizes the location of the car in Searcy Arkansas. The sign … (22 comments)

old cars: A Searcy Arkansas family from long ago. A house and a car was/is happiness. - 06/23/09 07:45 AM

Wouldn't it be interesting to know how many photographs were taken beside the family car?  It's the same now.
We have a long-running love affair with our cars.  It's no wonder.  Cars were more controllable than horses!
This picture was found in our Duncan family archives.  I hope someone in Searcyland can tell me who they are.  The house is neat, too, with a chimney, front porch, and double-hung windows.  As a child I can remember climbing under the houses and playing where it was cool and dirty. Note this house, as lots of houses were, is on a foundation but is … (26 comments)

old cars: Higginson Arkansas very rare photograph. 1923 view. - 08/03/08 12:59 AM

It is so exciting to have friends supplying my blog with these great old photographs.  This is one from Higginson AR. Ludean, my friend who lives there, got permission from the mayor to let me borrow the scenes.
Higginson is on the fringe of Searcy and used to be a thriving town as this shows.  It now has a post office, a fire department and some hard working council members who are keeping it a nice place to live.  New-house construction is going on in the city limits and lots of gas exploration and gas industry buildings are being built … (10 comments)

old cars: Old Rodger's Hospital in Searcy AR. A view from the past. - 07/31/08 03:07 PM

This photo of the old Rodgers Hospital on Woodruff Street in Searcy AR was taken by my friend Paula when she was doing a project for 4H as a youngster.   Look at the age of the cars!  It was owned by Porter Rodgers, Sr., a physician who was loved in the city.  I made a trip to the hospital late in the evening once because I had a daughter who was ill.  Dr. Rodgers was there and took care of her.  I guess he was making his rounds because surely he didn't get out in the packed snow just to see her.  … (34 comments)

old cars: Happy 90th Birthday to Leon Van Patten, Searcy AR - 06/29/08 08:50 AM

Everyone was there!  His friends, his relatives, his associates from the Historical Society where he has served on the Board as Treasurer for so many years.  He is now an honorary Lifetime Member of the White County Historical Society.
He stood in the entry of his daughter's house and greeted everyone as they came in, a gentleman dressed in suit and tie and being gracious to us all.  The family and the Historical Society served punch and cookies.
And what a great selection for a birthday picture to put on the invitation.  This little boy sitting on the top of … (9 comments)

old cars: A view of Searcy Arkansas downtown - 05/29/08 02:36 AM

While looking at old photos of our Searcy AR White County town, I was loaned this wonderful photo as well as the ones yesterday of our old Safeway store that was in the middle of downtown.  A friend has given me permission to post it.
It shows part of the court house sqare and the memorial that stands on the SW corner.  It also shows the Safeway store but it is an easier-to-recognize location in this picture.  The old Security Bank building shown here is under renovation right now.  I hope it will end up looking like this photo again.
Thanks … (12 comments)
