race st: First National Bank through the years. Searcy AR. 1904 lovely! - 09/14/23 12:46 PM

I was given this card with three different views of First National Bank in Searcy AR.  The 1904 view is SO different.  Correct me if I am wrong but I have been told that it was located at the corner of Arch and Spruce at that time and it burned.  In this picture it looks as if it was very fancy and perhaps had the entrance on the corner.  I'd like to see a very clear picture of it at that time.
In 1954, it seems much simpler and was in a different location. I believe it was then at the corner … (3 comments)

race st: Black House revisited. Searcy AR. 1983. Yancey-Quattlebaum Realtors - 08/29/19 12:19 PM

Historic Black House in Searcy AR
This newspaper clipping was a long time ago but the old house in the background is still old, still lovely, and still loved by all of Searcy, AR.  It has been around since the 1860s and had been restored by Dr. Porter Rodgers, Jr. and the Yancey-Quattlebaum real estate firm.  Standing in the yard were E. D. Yancey, Tom Quattlebaum, Johnnie Beavers, and Peggy Sims.
Today it is the home of the Searcy Art Gallery and is owned by the city of Searcy.  Exhibits are featured at the gallery and are always interesting.  Stop by during their … (4 comments)

race st: Time for a review. Noble's Motel in Searcy AR in its early days. About 1951. - 08/18/12 06:24 AM

This card is on ebay right now and is for sale.  I did a blog about the early days of this motel about two years ago.  The picture that was provided to me by the family is so much like this one that I thought it would be nice to review.  If you drive out East Race Street in Searcy AR right now it will be hard to spot the location of Noble's Courts.
Review the other blog by clicking right here.
Compare the photos.  This is the one Mike Noble loaned me for the blog.  The card on ebay … (2 comments)

race st: Race Street revisited. Searcy AR Sleuths....recognize this one? - 10/10/10 02:58 PM

I always liked this building.  This picture comes from an old Searcy High School annual, year not remembered.
Knowing how the Searcy Sleuths get bored and desire a challenge I'm not going to tell where it is or where it was and see if you can tell me.
So you tell me if you remember it?

race st: East Race Street in Searcy Arkansas revisited.....almost..... - 10/04/10 01:14 AM
Reports from people who grew up in Searcy Arkansas prior to the 60's indicate that East Race was a street with big trees, impressive houses and wrap porches in many cases.  The mystery for my Searcy readers today is whether they have ever seen this house.
Okay, I'll just go ahead and tell you.  This house sat where the Sexton's Grocery Store is today.  Reportedly, Safeway (the original grocery store who located there) offered to buy the house and the family who owned it chose to sell.
One family hated to see the beautiful house be razed so they bought … (18 comments)

race st: Frozen Delite Searcy AR. Kid's hangout for many years. What fun! - 08/29/10 02:25 PM

What fun!  Hanging out at Frozen Delite in Searcy Arkansas several years ago.  It was a new group of kids.  Bell bottom jeans, vests, boots, and lots of hair.  At least different from the 50's.
Frozen Delite was at the time of this photo located at 2200 East Race and a phone book says the owner was Jerry Manley.  That's from a 1987 phone book.  Perhaps Searcy readers will remember how long it had been there at that time.  Perhaps Searcy readers will know who these ladies were.
Now Frozen Delite is located at 2030 S Benton Street and caters to lots … (20 comments)

race st: Searcy Arkansas Armory Building....now a picture only....removed for progress. - 07/18/08 09:34 AM

This building was a familiar sight in Searcy Arkansas for many years.  It was torn down just about a year or two ago in order to make room for a Walgreen's Store on the old Truman Baker Cheverolet corner at Race and Main Streets.  It had changed over the years but not a whole lot.  It was made into offices for the car dealership and used that way for many years.  In fact, some of you will have to tell me what was there when it was the Armory.  Anita, are you out there?  This is a post card.
