reo houses: Well, where'd the Pergo go? - 10/10/09 07:35 AM
This is the second home that I've had listed as a foreclosure property from which the Pergo flooring has been removed.  It was kinda funny on the first one but this second one makes me wonder if it's easily transportable, sorta like a rug, and can be installed in a minute in someone's new house.

The first picture shows how the house looked when it sold for around $80,000.
The second one shows how it looks now as a foreclosure.
There had been lots of work done with replacement windows and siding and updated cabinetry and bath.
Now we're back to the … (30 comments)

reo houses: Creative, artistic, great architectural flair BUT deadly?? - 02/23/09 08:39 PM
Drifting out into REO land today I came across another interesting item for my friends on activerain, especially those picky home inspectors that I love, to evaluate.
This is a nice house, actually, and not very old, 4 bedrooms 3 baths, and all the other desirable features that make a house sell.  But when I started to enter it I found these steps.

There's no hand rail.  The steps don't go far enough across and they are not uniform in size.  The middle one is just big enough for a toe or two.  The porch is high enough to make it … (46 comments)

reo houses: This house was bad for their health. - 11/25/08 07:33 AM

I crept into a foreclosure this week as we usually do.  You never know what you might find.
I really thought that there had perhaps been a fire in the house because of the color of the ceilings and the look of wallpaper in the hall.
After taking my pictures I met a neighbor and asked what had happened to the house.  She replied, "They both died within just a few months of each other."
"Were they old?"
"No, they just smoked themselves to death," she replied.
So that explains the look of this hall.

reo houses: REO houses are missing lots of light bulbs and I'm making a guess why. - 11/11/08 05:38 PM
I have another REO house to be working up.  I visited it and got all the utilities turned on and started trying for lights!
No light bulbs!
Lots of the fans and light fixtures were missing bulbs.  This never used to be so common.  It you moved the light bulbs were left.  The bulbs were too inconsequential to worry with.  Besides, you might need lights as you were moving.
Not any more.  When you "go green" and buy all those little curly fluorescent light bulbs at a minimum of $3.00 each at the Dollar Store, you must unscrew them and carry … (30 comments)

reo houses: SOLD!!! The flea house is gone!!! Sold in one month! - 10/10/08 08:26 PM
My blogs have been flea infested for the last month.  I had a foreclosure property that was flea infested and I hated that house.  The exterminator sprayed it numerous times.  They'd still be there.
The appraiser was over there and called me up saying he wouldn't go in because the fleas were so bad. (This was after obtaining a buyer.)  I told him I'd hustle over with spray for his legs.  In the meantime, I told him to put down a sheet of white paper and see if fleas hopped on.
When I got there the paper was flealess.  I told … (11 comments)

reo houses: Fleas! More fleas! What a battle in this REO house. - 09/03/08 07:23 AM
I've written two blogs about the fleas in this REO house!  Yesterday I went to the house after stopping at the Dollar Store and buying 3 flea bombs.  I wore my shorts, sprayed my legs and timidly tread through the house to set the bombs off.  I put one in the hall, one in the dining area and one in the kitchen.  Then I fled!! As Steve Smith said, "Get the HEdoubleL out of there!"  (That Steve is so creative.  If you haven't been to his blog, visit it.)
In the yard were some kids whose grandmother lived next door.  They were familiar with … (28 comments)

reo houses: Please, please let the fleas be gone. - 08/27/08 06:35 PM
It seems easier somehow to find an REO house already empty.  You can call the locksmith, change the locks and proceed trying to get it ready to market.  I found one the other day, the locksmith came quickly and secured it.
Back in my office while giving me the bill, he kept scratching.  He had picked up fleas in the house and he couldn't wait to get home to do his strip search.  A neighbor told us that the owner had three cats inside.  He also said she hadn't been moved long and he'd helped her move.
That was Friday so it … (18 comments)

reo houses: The power of a letter or a postcard....inspired by Elizabeth's blog. - 08/21/08 07:47 AM
This blog was inspired by Elizabeth Weintraub's blog about getting mail.  I read her blog and this incident was still fresh on my mind.  (She doesn't need the publicity but she is one of the best bloggers on activerain.)
I had just been assigned this new REO property and was checking it out.  The neighbor from the house across the street was at first curt and sharp with me when I asked it if was empty.  Then he decided I was not the enemy and said the folks had moved out Saturday and he'd helped them and they were his good friends and he … (21 comments)

reo houses: A little tip for you before you enter suspicious houses. - 11/25/07 08:31 PM
We who do REOs never know what we're going to get into when we go through the front door.  That is if there is a front door.  Sometimes the doors are gone!
I learned many many years ago to be suspicious of what may jump on your legs as you step into the house.  Fleas may be starving for a new pet to bite.  One entry to a house was enough for me to learn a lesson.  I looked down and little black things were all over my legs.  So from then on I carried a white sheet of paper and … (14 comments)
