Another historic picture of the Rialto and downtown Searcy
As I stated in another blog, M. D. Faith was one of the early real estate brokers in Searcy AR.  He and his wife have both passed and their home on Pleasure Street has just sold.  An estate sale was held and I dropped by.  There was an envelop with negatives in it from pictures made by him for his real estate sales or for his pleasure.  I have a friend who was able to print the pictures from the negatives (I returned the negatives to the heirs) and this is one of … (4 comments)

rialto theater: 1959 Graduating class Searcy AR High School at Rialto Theater. - 09/24/19 12:49 PM

What a fine group of students!
Searcy Arkansas 1959 students ready to go out into the world!  They are standing in front of the historic Rialto Theater in Searcy.  The Rialto is still operating in Searcy and is still loved.  Lots of the students in this picture are still living in Searcy and the group is gathering this weekend, September 28, 2019, for a class reunion.  Don't mistake the Barbara Duncan on the first row for me, REALTOR Barbara S Duncan, but she is my sister-in-law and when I looked through the 1959 yearbook to find a picture of the group for … (3 comments)

rialto theater: Searcy AR gains a new business and a new historian! Will Walker. Yesteryear. - 03/15/18 12:41 PM

See if your situation is the same as mine.  I had 8 mm film of kids.  I had the film transferred to VHSs.  VHSs are now practically extinct so I had them transferred to CDs.  I had lots of old family photos and I had them copied for family members.....  AND I had to send them all off each time.
NOW we have a new business in town called Yesteryear, located on N Spring in downtown Searcy.  Will Walker, shown in the picture above in front of my historic postcard wall at my RE/MAX Advantage office, and his wife Amber have opened … (9 comments)

rialto theater: Searcy Rialto was host to Ricardo Montalban, Anita Hart Fuller - 12/17/17 12:11 PM

I have to ask Anita Hart Fuller whether the audience screamed and fainted when the Searcy Rialto Theater was visited by famous Ricardo Montalban and she attended and GOT HIS AUTOGRAPH on this sheet of paper.  Or did the screaming just start with Elvis and the Beatles?
So I am asking her on this blog.  She has graciously agreed to share this with us and she points out that the lipstick mark is where she kissed it and she has treasured it for so many years.  On the other side is the autograph of Julia Adams but she does not remember … (13 comments)

rialto theater: Rialto Theater Searcy AR 1960 ad in yearbook Searcy High School - 09/05/17 12:05 PM

The Rialto Theater in Searcy AR
We have seen so many pictures of the Rialto!  We have it stored as a beloved memory!  We love that it has been restored to what it was when we were growing up.  So since we never get tired of the Rialto, here's another picture.  This comes from the advertisements in the 1960 Searcy High School yearbook on page165.  Names are there and perhaps someone can say whether the ones in the picture paid for the ad or whether the group was for seniors.  It is unusual in that it does not show the Rialto but … (9 comments)

rialto theater: Rialto Theater has front redone! Searcy AR historic building. - 12/23/16 04:54 AM

NEW VIEWS OF THE RIALTO THEATER IN SEARCY AR!

I wrote the following blog about 8 years ago.  It was a bit of a plea for keeping the Searcy historic theater around forever.  It seems to be happening!  These are two new pictures of the lovely old building, now being renovated with the front completed!

Searcy Arkansas has one of the oldest theaters in Arkansas.  It was built in approximately 1923 and still flashes its Neon sign as busy Race Street passes within a few feet of its ticket window.
The theater building is owned by the city of Searcy as it was donated to … (10 comments)

rialto theater: What!! The Beatles came to Searcy AR! Oops.....I read it wrong. - 09/02/16 06:26 AM

Looking through a lot of memories, I found this ticket and jumped!  The Beatles came to Searcy Arkansas somewhere back in time!
Then doing a closer examination, I saw that this was advertising the first Beatles movie!  No personal appearances but they gave out a Premier Souvenir Ticket for this first show held on Wednesday, August 12.  (No year date is given but it had to be sometime in the middle 60's and the person who owned this ticket LOVED the Beatles and clipped every picture and every bit of printed info about them.)
Now the ticket itself might be considered historic … (6 comments)

rialto theater: Rialto Theater, Searcy AR, 1962 students. Historic photo. - 03/13/16 10:54 AM

This picture is taken from a 1962 Searcy High School yearbook and there is a "Save the Rialto" campaign going on in Searcy AR so it needs to be shared.
It is rather dark BUT the names of the people in the photo of the Rialto Theater area are shown.  It is an unusual photo of the historic theater because most of the photos are taken from the front.
This one was probably taken at the back of the theater.  Could it have been upstairs in the balcony?
Perhaps one of the ones in the picture can clarify where they were.  … (2 comments)

rialto theater: Save the Rialto. Searcy AR. 1963 group in front of theater. - 08/23/15 06:46 AM

Old yearbooks have become pictures of the past and some of the pictures are important.  Right now in Searcy AR a group has formed to try to "Save the Rialto."  The Rialto is an old movie theater that has been on the same block corner for years and years.  It is still in operation and anyone who lives or lived in Searcy loved going there.  Almost every year book had a picture of the Rialto in the advertisement section.
This one is from the 1963 yearbook and has a large crowd in front.  Perhaps the Searcy Sleuths can recognize and identify … (10 comments)

rialto theater: The Rialto, Searcy AR, always had a good movie. - 06/02/15 09:55 AM

This picture of the Rialto in Searcy AR has to bring back of memories.  Look at the dressed up couple going in to see what looks like GI Blues.  The girls are off to the right while the guys fumble in their pockets for the money for tickets. (Wonder how guys afford the price of tickets today and then get popcorn and a coke inside?)
This picture was in the 1968 Harding Petit Jean yearbook.  Searcy is now trying to raise funds to restore the Rialto.  It is still open and the tickets now are the best bargain in town but … (6 comments)

rialto theater: I didn't know our old Rialto Theater in Searcy Arkansas had a basement! - 07/19/09 07:42 AM
On the left in this picture the old Rialto Theater in Searcy Arkansas is shown.  It has had major changes since opened in 1923 as the Grand Theater.  In 1929 it had the name changed to Rialto.
In 1949  it was remodeled to include the addition of a 67 foot high neon marquis.
Searcy Arkansas and White County have enjoyed the Rialto for about 86 years.
There is a movement right now by some residents of Rose Bud High School led by Liz Clark and Julie Chism to take it on as a project and assist in trying to raise funds to … (23 comments)

rialto theater: Picture of Searcy Fire Department in 1947. Rialto Theater 1949. - 02/09/09 08:13 AM

Here's a great old picture that was loaned to me by a friend who paints great signs, Kyle Searcy.  He has an appropriate name, does he not?  Kyle Searcy from Searcy Arkansas, owner of Searcy Signs Inc.!!  He even painted a billboard for me!   I believe blog commenter Anita can probably name these guys.
He also loaned me the picture of the old historic Rialto Theater at approximately 1949.  His dad did the neon signs for the theater.  Kyle was trained as a sign painter by his dad and became just a skilled as the dad.  In fact, Kyle worked … (19 comments)

rialto theater: Searcy Arkansas's Rialto Theater, on the court square. - 08/31/08 02:29 AM

Searcy Arkansas has one of the oldest theaters in Arkansas.  It was built in approximately 1923 and still flashes its Neon sign as busy Race Street passes within a few feet of its ticket window.
The theater building is owned by the city of Searcy as it was donated to the city by a prominent family several years ago.  It is now operated by a gentleman who gets to rent it free because he paid about $75,000 of his own funds to renovate the Rialto.
It's a win-win situation because the building is not sitting vacant.  Victor Weber runs the theater … (20 comments)
