searcy ar: Who needs a stop sign with this parade? Ducks in Searcy Arkansas. Ugly duckling? - 02/24/11 12:34 PM
Heading to work!!
Gotta hurry!
What the devil!!!
Look who is holding up traffic?
Who do these arrogant little fellers think they are?

Since they have the road blocked I might as well look them over.  Looks as if there is one "odd duck."  Or an "ugly duckling."   Or is that just the way a duck looks before it matures.

One thing this little parade made me do is slow down, stop, look and see the beauty of our everyday life.

searcy ar: Great picture of Bald Knob Arkansas depot and everyday life in the past. - 02/22/11 02:50 PM
We did a blog just a few days ago showing the Judsonia Arkansas depot.  The picture was on ebay and it sold.
Here's another one of a depot on ebay right now that is for sale.  It is so different from all other historical ones where the people are all standing still and waiting for the picture.  It has a dog!  In action!  I'm assuming the dog is friendly and the conductor is just playing with it.  But it could be the dog was angry and the conductor was leading it away from the little children.  Either way, it is a great … (12 comments)

searcy ar: Look at the curves on this house! East Market beauty Searcy Arkansas. - 02/18/11 12:32 PM
You've got your own route to your destination?  Right?  So have I.  I drive down East Market Street near Harding University everyday.  Each day I compare the lovely old houses on the North side vs. the apartments and changes on the South side.
I especially like this house.  The court house says it was built in 1945.

It has more curves than a fashion model!  Over the windows, over the doors, and even the roof line curves.  It appears to be a delightful mixture of brick, rock and stucco.
But for the past few days as I drive by … (42 comments)

searcy ar: Another puzzle for Searcy Arkansas Sleuths. What are these girls doing? - 02/12/11 03:31 AM
Stumbling across this picture which shows action going on brought back a lot of old memories.
Seems that I remember this game but don't remember being any good at it.  I was always a scaredy-cat as the kids used to call each other when they were doing a "double-dog-dare" and you refused to do it.
Since I grew up in another state, I'm wondering if you Searcy Arkansas folks called it the same thing we did.  And how strange to actually find an old picture of these dressed up kids playing.

searcy ar: Last rites are being held right here on this blog site. Deaths on Center Street, Searcy AR. - 02/04/11 01:12 PM
We might as well say our final good-byes to these two houses on East Center Street.  Here is what is left of them.  First is 411 East Center.

Second is 403 E Center.

403 East Center was born in 1915 and lived a peaceful existence until 2011.  Just days ago I saw people living there.  I had to take my final picture from county data because we had no warning of the quick death.  I really liked the chimney and the little eyebrows.  It sold back in 1991 through a real estate firm and two times since then.

searcy ar: Anyone remember this old filling station on Main street Searcy Arkansas? - 01/31/11 01:09 PM
WR Glass has occupied this building in Searcy Arkansas for many years.  They have either moved or closed their business because this old building is now empty.
It has intrigued me for years.  Look at the columns.  Are those Art Deco?  Look at the tile.  There has to be a history here that our Searcy Sleuths can uncover.  This one was down the street from the Pershing Stationwhich we've blogged about.  Was it also a filling station?  Perhaps it was a store.
Right now it is just a small forlorn building on a busy corner but we need to explore it … (38 comments)

searcy ar: Whew.....it appears the Margaret Pope house, Searcy Arkansas, lives on. - 01/28/11 12:57 PM
The Margaret Pope house in Searcy Arkansas is on Market Street and we drive by it all the time.  It looked like this for a long time.

One day I drove by and did a double-take as I saw big construction happening.....or deconstruction possibly.

The work went on and on and on.  Stucco came off the front.  The house got leveled.  And I kept worrying because I thought I'd drive by and the house would be smashed.  Now, however, it looks like this.

And curtains have gone up.  People have vehicles parked in the yard.  I believe it … (13 comments)

searcy ar: Thank you, Penny Choate, for restoring a grand old house on Race Street, Searcy AR - 01/22/11 03:52 AM
One could tell something was going on!  Look at the men in those buckets cutting those giant trees.

Sure nuff!  Word was out that the old Tom Watkins house located at the corner of North Oak and East Race in Searcy Arkansas, built in the early 20's, had been bought and was to be restored by Attorney Penny Choate of the Choate Law Firm.
Everyone cheered!  We were all afraid that the house would be hit by the wrecker's ball.  As soon as Attorney Choate had the trees cleared, she got the painters out and started working on the outside.  … (10 comments)

searcy ar: I need the home inspectors to inspect my wood art. Bob Miller bowl gets a hole! - 01/01/11 09:55 AM
Dr. Bob Miller was my dentist....gentle and kind as could be.  I always admired his art work when I had to visit him.  The art work that he zeroed in on was working with wood.  Beautiful wood objects, including turned bowls.  He was honored as he and other artists were invited to display their works at the Searcy Art Gallery.
At the reception, I bought a lovely bowl which was signed by the artist.

While dusting around my bowl today I noticed some strange stuff under it.  It looked like powder.  I looked more closely and found two holes in … (34 comments)

searcy ar: Bald Knob Arkansas revisited. Good use of an old filling station. - 12/28/10 12:21 PM
Bald Knob is a small town approximately 12 miles from Searcy Arkansas, the White County seat.  Bald Knob grows on you.  Despite the funny name, the town is a treasure with good places to eat, an appreciation for history, and friendly folks.
I bought this old card.

It shows the Market Cafe.  The Market Cafe is still in existence with a loyal clientele.  Look behind the cafe. See that Market Station filling station?  It's still there also.

But now it has a new service.  It's the Bald Knob Fire Department!  Bald Knob appreciated the old rock architecture and put … (35 comments)

searcy ar: Another landmark going down. More progress in Searcy Arkansas. - 12/23/10 03:47 AM
Rumor had it that the square corner of Sawmill Road and Country Club Road East in Searcy Arkansas had been sold for a HUGE amount of money.
What's a square corner?  Well, I've heard that they go back so far that when roads were being made the old farmer would say, "You aint going through my pasture but you can go around the edge of it."  Thus the corner could be sharp and square.  In Arkansas we still have quite a few of them.
On this square corner was an old horse and his barn.  I watched him for years as I made … (25 comments)

searcy ar: Did you ever drive along the two lane highways and anticipate stopping at a place like Pecan Joe's? - 12/20/10 01:02 PM
This card is for sale on ebay and shows the old Pecan Joe's in Beebe Arkansas.  There used to be so many of these colorful places alongside the smaller highways.  They'd have up signs that led up to the business and little kids (and big kids) would eagerly anticipate stopping at a "Pecan Joe's."

With today's new super highways, the Pecan Joe's didn't have a chance.  We'd fly by this place so fast we'd never see it.  And if we did see it we'd have to figure out how to get off the freeway, turn around and go back to … (23 comments)

searcy ar: Trends do change in bedroom decor! Newest seems to be "creativity." - 12/12/10 05:09 AM
When my kids were growing up and a new house was being built or an old one decorated, it was fashionable to let the kids choose their carpet color. (Yes, carpet was fashionable then.  No one wanted hardwood floor because it was cheaper than carpet!)  Pergo didn't exist.
So a house might have a hall that led you to a series of doors that had all colors of carpet.
Now the trend seems to be to go even further and let the kids be creative in color and design on the walls.  Here are two examples taken from just the … (21 comments)

searcy ar: Search for your town on ebay and find treasures? Presbyterian Church. Searcy Arkansas 1910. - 12/06/10 07:55 AM
If you haven't already done so you need to put a permanent search on ebay for things from your city.  My search for Searcy Arkansas turns up a real treasure from time to time.  Here's a card that pulled up and I bought it.

It is the old, now gone, Presbyterian Church that was located on Main Street where the Rendezvous now sits.  My understanding is that it burned down and was eventually replaced by the present church at 400 W. Arch.  We did a blog on in a few months ago.

I really like the old post cards with … (16 comments)

searcy ar: What is Gawker.com and why am I on it??? - 12/04/10 12:49 AM
Daughter called me in a frenzy......
"Mother!  Mother!  Mother!  You are on Gawker!  I almost lost it when you pulled up on this website!  Go to your computer!  Fast!  Hurry!!"
I typed in GAWKER.com and look what she had found.

So there I was!  Standing beside a huge guy!  I got no recognition, however.  All this site did was talk about the dangers of eating too much. (Were they talked about BOTH of us?)
All I had done was put up this blog showing me with the tallest man and the heaviest man at the Ripley's Believe It or Not … (12 comments)

searcy ar: Harding College, Searcy Arkanasas, in 1948. More buildings from the campus yearbook. - 11/22/10 02:11 PM
Yesterday's blog had views of Harding College in 1948 (now Harding University).  Here are a few more views that were in the yearbook followed by the aerial view again.  See if you can find the buildings on the aerial view if you'd like.  The pictures show a great love of shade trees and prior to our love for manicured lawns.

This one is was called the Bell home.

Here is the swimming pool for boys at  the college.  Wonder if they had a swimming pool for girls?

This one is the gym.

And here is the aerial view … (16 comments)

searcy ar: How'd that Taco Bell get on the west side of Searcy Arkansas! - 11/16/10 01:13 PM
How'd I get across town so fast!!!????
 Am I losing my mind????
I was just driving along Beebe Capps Expressway, having turned onto it from Country Club Road.
And I almost lost it!!  There was a brand new Taco Bell just sitting there with all the signs up and looking as if it had been there for years!  I am glad no car was close because I had to get my bearings and figure out how that Taco Bell had gone up so fast!

It is right there across the street from the sparkling new First Security Bank branch and … (12 comments)

searcy ar: Stott's Drug Store. Historic store in downtown Searcy. 1976 picture. - 11/14/10 06:21 AM
I've done two blogs with Stott's Drug store featured.  The drug store has been in Searcy at the same location for many years.  Going inside is also interesting because they have collectibles from the drug business all over the top shelf in the store.

They have recently remodeled the front to make it look old again!

And looking through an old 1976 Searcy High School yearbook I found their advertisement and this picture. The children of Roger and Virginia Williams proudly pose in the family drug store.  Nancy is now a druggist herself and manages the drug store.  Lindsey is … (8 comments)

searcy ar: Old picture, old truck, and it must have been cold!! Searcy Arkansas. - 11/08/10 12:49 PM
Don't you love old pictures?  The black and white ones from way back just put me in a wondering mood.  Wonder how cold it was because this truck has chains.  We never use chains in the south, do we?
Wonder if it was Christmas because looks as if each child has a toy.
Wonder what kind of truck this was.  I've never seen one like it before.
This picture comes from an album from the Holmes family in Searcy Arkansas.  I think it is my husband's grandmother but I don't think it was taken in Searcy Arkansas.
Wonder what kind of … (17 comments)

searcy ar: A beautiful and inspiring cow story from Searcy Arkansas. - 11/06/10 03:06 AM

The cows above are exploring a burned barn that once housed their food.  I used it in a blog a few years ago.
My husband comes from a cow-loving family.  The cattle farm that once seemed out in the country is now within city limits and the cows could be considered city slickers.  Throughout the years, two barns have burned, houses have surrounded their pastures and things just change.
The family decided to get rid of the cows for the winter.  Sell them.  Get rid of a little of the work.  Stop having to worry about feeding them when ice and … (19 comments)
